I like this about British shows too. People look like everyday people, not the extremely rare, exceptionally attractive people that you hardly ever see in everyday life.

Yes, I like this, to!

Me, too. I just wish I could understand them better. There have been many a British tv series I had to stop watching (Shameless is one of them) because I just couldn't catch the words.

Agreed. I love their reality TV -- the people look like real people! All of their shows are so much better in that aspect than our US ones.

I find it interesting how you use Shameless for this, because while I agree the British cast looks much more ordinary than the American cast, I don't actually think the American cast is unnaturally beautiful. Make up usually does a good job of making them look like ordinary people (with the exception of Fiona).

One of the things I noticed and enjoyed while living in New Zealand was that the people in advertisements actually looked like average human beings. Our mother claimed they were making a mistake, but I actually found it really endearing.

Rogan, the way you phrased this came across a little... patronising. I'm not sure you meant it that way..?

Me too, OP. Though I prefer European TV because everyone looks like real people. Although US TV has good writing and effects, etc, I find it so damn boring because everyone looks kinda homogenous. It gets really dull after a while.

And when there are beautiful people in European shows, there tends to be a diversity to it. It's not just that plastic, coathanger-thin beauty you get in US shows. Bleurgh.

There are some US shows where everyone looks so "US tv pretty" that I can't tell characters apart. Soap operas are super bad for this, though I only watch them at my grandma's.

And when there are beautiful people in European shows, there tends to be a diversity to it.

I think this is a consequence of the 'average' people being unusually pretty - when your 'average' is pretty, you're much more limited in what you can use to signify 'beautiful'.

I know! I watch a lot of British shows and sometimes it's shocking when I switch back to something from the U.S. All of a sudden the majority of people are thin with perfect skin, hair and teeth. There are some exceptions for comedy, but the kicker is that if the character is supposed to be sexy, they absolutely will not deviate from those standards of conventional beauty. At best, you get "Hollywood Ugly".

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's that famous British smile! Most British people have poorer teeth and it effects their overall appearance.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, they probably stronger teeth, just not artificially straightened or covered with veneers.

In real life Yanks are more prone to terrible teeth. (No socialized dentistry in the USA.) It's just that L.A. actors have partially false teeth a lot.

That's a myth, though. The British have fairly healthy teeth, it's just that healthy teeth aren't the same as cosmetically perfect teeth. They don't spend as much time on straightening and whitening as Americans do, that's all.

Despite finding many American actors attractive (I have a pretty broad definition of attractive, tbh) I sort of agree? I think the actors in British shows tend to look more like people you could actually meet, and many of them have more 'character'. (Which is a good thing!)

Being Human UK for example, I LOVED. And the cast was beautiful and extremely good looking, but natural as well. I liked it. Being Human US...the cast was still good looking, but they weren't as appealing to me. (Annie is the prime example for this imo, because while both actresses are lovely, the UK one is much more my type. Not only can she be hot she's all kinds of adorable and has the best facial expressions.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually have that problem, but I think I might if I started trying to watch Daredevil(?). I keep running across gif sets with this one woman, who is so beautiful with such impeccable makeup that my mind keeps assuming she's an alien or a hallucination or something. No one looks that flawless and put together, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...I can't get into British shows because I find the actors too average-looking, and also I don't like British English. Oops? I think I need unnaturally beautiful people to keep reassuring me that something is fictional.

My sense of attractiveness must be very... flat? Because I find actors on British TV to be attractive more often than not and yet I don't find actors on American TV to be "too pretty" in comparison. They're all attractive to me on either side of the pond.

Text: British shows are always easier to immerse myself in compared to Americans, because the actors don’t seem unrealistically good looking

There are exceptions that are mostly male actors, but the majority are hot people with perfect makeup and they throw me off almost every time.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
the only people on shameless US that i think are "unrealistically" hot are the women that play fiona and v. i do agree that most of them have teeth that are too good looking and well cared for for people who are supposedly super poor.

I'm not sure I agree.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Coupling (UK) was sort of based on Friends and while the Friends cast is attractive, I would say the Coupling (UK) was equally, if not more attractive. I will say the Coupling (US) cast was very pretty, but since it was such a big misstep (and only lasted a few eps), I'm not sure it matters.

I would put the Law and Order and Law and Order: UK casts about on par with each other. Same with the Being Human (UK) and Being Human (US) casts.

I will say The Office (US) cast is more attractive than The Office (UK).

Anyway, I think this could be pretty subjective.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's telling that, when they made Gracepoint (the US remake of Broadchurch), they kept David Tennant but not Olivia Coleman.

Sure, Tennant has a bit of an American fanbase through Doctor Who (though I think the target markets for DW and Gracepoint would be very different), but Coleman is 1000000x the better actor. She's my favourite person on TV, but 'Hollywood pretty' she is not.
