Re: Fandom Etiquette

There's a difference between an issue with a character or "thoughtful critique" as the anon above said and hate, though. I get that everything that's not "this character is a literal ray of sunshine and can do absolutely no wrong" gets labelled as hate by some people - and that's the real issue here imo - but as someone who loves characters that are hated in fandom I'm getting real tired of getting a notification that there's a new post in the character tag only to see it's another post calling that character a slut/whore/bitch.

I mean, why do (general) you need to tag a post like that? You're clearly not looking for a thoughtful discussion of this character's flaws or a dialogue about the writing or whatever. And is it really that important to you to organize all the times you called the character a slut under one neat link on your blog? /2cents

"You're clearly not looking for a thoughtful discussion of this character's flaws or a dialogue about the writing or whatever."

Why would you assume this?

I'm not gonna lie, as someone who is a huge fan of a character that is loathed and regularly gets torn to pieces by fandom (Anakin Skywalker if you're wondering) I just find that people use "don't tag your hate" as an excuse to silence dissenting opinions.

If I were tagging it with say "Tony Stark love" or a positive tag, I'd completely agree with you. But why is the general tag reserved for only positive comments?

You think that someone posting "tony stark sucks!!!!" and nothing else is looking for thoughtful discussion?

Where did anyone say that the post would be "Tony Stark sucks!"?

If I *were* writing a critique about Tony Stark, it would express my frustration at how the films seem to feel they need to beat it in my brain that he's so awesome.

We have to show Tony being a genius! And rich! And getting all the women! And having all the best comebacks! Look at how cool he is! LOOK! AT! IT!

That's literally how I feel when I watch the Iron Man movies and I find it exhausting. If you think that's mindless hate, then you're free to. But I think it's fair enough explanation of my feelings.

The post that the anon I was referring to was referring to said that there is a difference between character critique and character hate, and that the former does not describe someone who's just calling a character a slut/whore/bitch. They were just saying that someone who makes a post like "tony stark is such a bitch ugh" is clearly not looking for a thoughtful discussion, which... I'm not sure how you could argue that such a person is looking for a thoughtful discussion.

They were not saying that your thoughtful critique is not thoughtful critique. You are misreading their post so that you can use it as a place to rant.

Ah okay.

I thought this part here

"I mean, why do (general) you need to tag a post like that? "

was referring to negative posts in general, not just ones filled exclusively with insults.

Why would you assume this?

I assume that because I've seen enough arguments that started with someone responding to one of those posts. Usually it goes like this:

A: "Char is such a bitch. I wish she would die already."
B: *in an offended tone* "Why do you think that?"
A: "Numbered list of things Char has done wrong; and also why are you responding to my post. Free speech etc."
B: "Numbered counter-arguments; and also free speech doesn't mean you're not wrong, because you are, personal insult."
*rapid descent into more personal insults that somehow ends with both parties thinking they're being the reasonable one*

I don't think the general tag should be reserved for positive comments only. There's a middle ground between uncritical love ("This character is perfect and can do no wrong") and hate ("She's a slut and needs to die.") I actually think you could have a very interesting discussion about how one character I often see referred to as a slut seems to view sex as a currency. I just really don't think that someone who calls her a slut and wishes for her death is looking to have that discussion.

Fair enough.

I didn't realize initially, upon reading your post, that you were referring ONLY to people who post insulting comments when saying they weren't looking for a discussion. (I initially thought you meant that people who write anything negative weren't looking for discussion).

I agree that people who write "so and so is a useless bitch" are 99% of the time not looking for constructive commentary. And I do think that they should, as a matter of courtesy, try to post that more in hate-specific tags. But I also don't really think it's something fandom should jump down their throat for either (unless they put it in a positive tag -- then that's fair).

DA. I feel like people like that are the ones who aren't going to care if you like the character or not, and you're better off blocking the individual.

Like some people really don't care and will do things to purposely antagonize, so it's better to not blame the whole fandom for it.

I still don't like the "get rid of haters" attitude because I find more often it's directed at ANYONE with any sort of negative opinion, but I understand how liking something unpopular can get exhausting, I've had that issue myself but I just tend to ignore it.
