I'm exactly the same. Along with a few other similar artists, a couple friends, and one or two artists who I know are vehemently against porn.

OMG, A PIANO SECRET? :OOOOOO

35

(Anonymous) 2008-01-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
35. Maybe you're looking at them too critically. Just think of them as personalities without boxing them in with 'females'? I know, this sounds really wtf because of conditioning, but I've disliked female characters a lot before, and am only now looking at them with an open view, because I realised how narrow-minded I was being, even when I did want to like girls. Just like them for their personalities, not their gender, is all I can say.

You don't have to like the fiesty, stubborn, spirited girls, but surely they're not all that cookie-cutter. Take into consideration their history, their friends, their position in society... It's very easy to find someone to admire, and it will in turn open up your views to liking other girls.

Anon because I KNOW this secret will have lots of wank.

35. You know, I'm so tired of the female-hating secrets, so I'm just going to say this.

If you can't find a single female character you like -- or at least don't hate -- in any fandom, I can only figure two things:

one, you are holding female characters to different standards than male characters, because I doubt all the male characters are perfectly balanced (in fact, I'd be willing to bet a number of them resemble the female characters you hate). Just like in real life, female characters can't win -- if they are tough, they're too tough, or cold, or bitches, if they're "feminine," they're too feminine, weak, or sluts, and if they're balanced, they're a Mary Sue;

or two, the male characters are perfectly balanced and the female characters are all at one extreme or the other, in which case I personally would not want to be in a fandom that paints women as such.

If it's just certain characteristics you dislike, then I fail to see why you're stating this as "I hate FEMALE characters" as opposed to "I hate 'tough' characters," or "I hate 'perfect' characters," etc. unless you really do hate female characters or you're trying to just provoke the issue more.

8. Oh, god. This has to be my favorite secret that has ever been posted here. Not because I agree or anything (I love Rukia to pieces), but because I understand where the OP is coming from and this secret made me giggle in response to that. A+.

... though, honestly. If Rukia should be dead, then Ichigo should be decomposing by now. But I know, I know. He's the shounen hero. ¦D

Talking about Animation versus Art Style (to me, at least) is everything about the show that speaks of how big their budget was. How detailed the backgrounds were, how many layers there are to a shot, how realistic and complex the movement is, how much CG there is, how good the CG is, how much depth of color there is, the extent to which the show relies on stock animation and static pans -- all these things contribute tot he quality of the animation, regardless of the art style.

F'rinstance, Studio Ghibli movies tend to have relatively simple character designs, but the animation is always gorgeous -- detailed, vivid, with realistic movement and crowd sequences where everyone is moving and action sequences that are fluid and real instead of jerky. Whereas some shows might have beautiful art style and character design, but the animation is quite simplistic and basic in comparison. (One of my favorite shows, Utena, is a superb example of how to make the best of a tiny budget.)

25. I love that movie. I don't care if it isn't accurate to history or 'the Odyssey'. It's just awesome.

13. I think this is supposed to be "especially when you compare her to others," but I read it as "compare bento others" and was really confused for a second...

14. Why is "I was a fury" making me laugh so hard? XD Maybe it's cause I've had a crap day and just needed to laugh? No offense to OP, it's just the typo put a really funny mental image in my head. ...ahaha.. fury-boyfriend.. oh man. (Psst, there's two r's in furry. Just an FYI.)

43. Hmm, so true. I'd love to see more live theater, especially Broadway, but it can be awfully expensive to do so. Bah to elitism. I guess in some ways I can understand, like how sometimes an original book is far superior to the film adaptation and you're like.. "why did they change this? why did they leave that out? arrrgh, it's all wrong." But then it's not really fair to look down on those who enjoyed the film, regardless. It's kind of the same thing with musicals and movies based on musicals. Oh well..

47. I, personally, would love to see your work. (Ilu Shinon & Gatrie~) I've never really been a lurker, but I do know what the urge to distance yourself from your past work is like. If you find that you really don't want to be associated with it any more? Change names. It's pretty easy~

See, it's the idea that people might want to read my fic that makes me want to try to make it perfect, which means that I never get anything done. However illogical that may seem. Uh. Mostly I'm a huge coward. I'm working on that.

I really appreciate the encouragement, though! I'm going to try and make it a resolution to post my current project as soon as it's all done.

...and that was for 47

43. Putting aside the fact that you're going to get asshole elitists in every fandom with multiple incarnations, be that stage play/movie, book/movie, book/TV show, manga/anime, foreign/domestic, classic/reboot, or whatever else...

Really, musical fandom isn't that scary, and I guarantee you that you will find plenty of people who are also fans of the movies without necessarily being fans of or having seen the stage versions.

(I say this as a musical fan with absolutely no access to Broadway -- no money and I live far away from New York, in a place with no real theatre community. But I live out my stage fannishness vicariously through illegal means cast recordings, librettos, and, er, other means that shouldn't be talked about here. Be that as it is, I totally get the not wanting or not being able to get into the stage version of a movie you love. Shouldn't stop you from enjoying your fannishness with other fans of the movie.)

Yes, actually! xD Or would you call the modding communities at Spellhold Studios and Chosen of Mystra mod fandoms...? Either way, mods made the game even more fun. Especially the flirt packs.

I... think I can understand what you're saying there a little bit. But I don't hate female characters, LOL. I love me some strong women. But a female character doesn't have to be a bitch to be strong. :|

Re: 35

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
so hard.

I don't hate female characters, and I adore strong female characters in my fandoms. Like... A LOT. It's a pleasant change from the wilting-flower types that were so popular for so long.

But at the same time, there's been a growing trend lately. People seem to think that to have a strong lady, they have to be a bitchy ice queen. It's really irritating. :/ Hell, if DISNEY of all people can have well-balanced strong women (many in the form of princesses), anyone can.

(Though I'd take PMSing bitch strong characters over the ditzy klutzes that are becoming popular again, any day.)

Tl;dr: Word. Totally agree.
