Tolkien - Elwing and Finwe

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been reading a lot of meta about Elwing and trying to wrap my head around her and her actions.

I feel like understanding Finwe is crucial to understanding the dynamics of the Noldorians, especially Feanor and Fingolfin.

So, what are people's ideas about these two? How do you view them? What headcanons have you heard?

(Or, feel free to talk about anything else. I love all Tolkien.)

Re: Tolkien - Elwing and Finwe

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like how you interpret Elwing depends heavily on how you interpret the Silmarils. I don't have a consistent headcanon about her, just a lot of branching speculation.

Finwe I think was kind of an idiot about his family. It wouldn't have been catastrophic if Feanor hadn't been involved, but Finwe just didn't handle things well.

Re: Tolkien - Elwing and Finwe

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was the thing that surprised me about all the meta regarding Elwing - that somehow the Silmaril was a drug that influenced her, which I don't buy but seems rather prevalent. What are some of your speculations? I'm also on the fence and keep changing my mind.

I desperately want to know more about how Finwe dealt with Feanor and Fingolfin. Was he blind to the tension? Did he try to stay out of it? I mean, he's said to favor Feanor and yet Feanor still acts like he's so insecure; it would help immeasurably if I knew just what Finwe did or did not do about the situation.

Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Two random discussion questions:

1) What character who was not a companion would you must want to see as a companion? From anytime in Doctor Who, living or dead.

2) What companion would you most want to see paired with a Doctor they never actually interacted with?

Oh, Sally Sparrow.

2) What companion would you most want to see paired with a Doctor they never actually interacted with?

Hm... Donna and Eleven could be fun.

1) Rita, from The God Complex. She kicked ass, and the fact that she was a believer in religion would have made her an interesting companion, I think.

2) Well, Donna and Five, most obviously, but that's just cause I kinda ship it. For just gallivanting around... Clara and Seven?

1) I liked Rory's dad or Psi and Saibra from Time Heist
2) Martha and Eleven (or 12 or 9 or ...)

Re: Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto on Psi and Saibra! I really liked them a lot.

Also seconding you on Martha. I'd love to see her interact with Eleven or Twelve.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory's dad was great but that's just because he was played by Mark Williams.

Karra the Cat-woman from Survival. She would have made an awesome companion and not just because she was a lesbian cat-woman. It would have also meant they had to do more space-based stories or at least more future based stories though.
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Karra

Best Companion/Doctor mash up. I'd have loved to see Frobisher-Ten (or Frobisher-War Doctor) a comedy penguin with a degree of sarcasm would be just the ticket to play off those more tetchy guys, a waddling Alfred to keep their more self-important and self-destructive qualities in line.

Edit: I'd also like to have kept Adam for a little while longer. I know Nine was particularly prickly and short-tempered, but I can't help but feel Adam got the short end of the stick. Other incarnations of the Doctor would have cut him more slack and been willing to work him up a little to see if they could rescue him from himself rather than just dumping him back into the timestream with a hole in his head.

Karra seems to be a fun character. I didn't get that far into Sixth's era so never seen her before.

I want more Wilf, and I'd kinda like to see him with Twelve.

1) Rose's mom.
2) Fitz and Five because Five is calm where Eight is excitable and also because Five sorely needs some cool companions.

1. Hmmmm. Young!Amy if she counts. Otherwise maybe Danny just because I wanted him to live and because him in the Tardis with the Doctor and Clara would have been awesome.

2. Donna and Eleven. Or Amy and Ten. Or Donna and Twelve or Amy and Twelve. River and Twelve, though she doesn't really count as a companion.

WWE or NXT

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-04-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
anyone wanna talk about Extreme Rules, KotR, Raw or last night's NXT? Haven't seen Smackdown yet, though I saw it already came on in Canada.

No, no one other than you likes wrestling. Are you a twelve-year old boy? It's all fake, anyway.

Shut up

wrestling is cool (even if I don't keep up with it)

everyone knows it's fake, it owns anyway

It kinda sucked how they condensed the KotR tournament, but I'm glad Wade Barrett won. Maybe now they'll do something with his character.

And speaking of doing something with their character, can Creative please figure out what to do with Dean Ambrose? Poor guy's been in some kind of mid-card jobber losing streak hell since his feud with Seth Rollins ended.

Lovecraft

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2015-04-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been doing some on-again-off-again perusal through Lovecraft.

What are some of your favorite stories? Mine are Reanimator, Thing on the Doorstep, and Dreams in the Witch House (the last my current fave because I am a stressed college student).

Also, in terms of fanworks, I have an ongoing project adapting Reanimator into a kid of modern day audio play with some friends of mine. We've also genderbent Herbert West and the narrator, which has been a very interesting avenue to pursue!

Just discovered Lovecraft myself. For me, you just can't beat the Shadow Out of Time. Although it doesn't look like anybody else has done anything with the Great Race of Yith, which I find kind of disappointing. I'm also disappointed that "the amazing race of Yith" has no google search results.

Shadow out of Time is probably my favorite. It's... a little different from his other works. It's more of a fantasy story, and it has a sort of melancholy softness to it that a lot of his works lack.

My second favorite would have to be The Colour Out of Space. I grew up where there had been nuclear testing, though, so I grew up with that kind of creeping fear of the fallout and radiation? It might not have the same impact for someone who never experienced that.

Of his shorter stories I love The Outsider the best. TBH I love pretty much all of his works, though, and I've read all of them multiple times (some of them hundreds of times) throughout my life.
