I’m getting bored with the MCU.

It used to be my biggest fandom, and I haven’t found a new one to replace it yet. It’s uncomfortable. I miss being excited.

Bonus: I’m afraid that Ms. Marvel and Black Panther won’t actually get made because enough other people will get bored with the MCU that they’ll cut them from the lineup for “financial reasons.”

I’m still excited for some of the upcoming movies, but after seeing Ultron, I’m losing confidence.

I get it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Ultron was just okay, but a lot of people liked it (and it was pretty well reviewed). So if it keeps on like that, I think Black Panther and Ms. Marvel will happen. But if they get a few movies with mediocre box office or one real dud, yeah, they will probably get cut.

It depends on the viewer. I liked Age of Ultron but I'm much more excited for the director's cut. I'm also amped for the future movies, especially Civil War because the Captain America movies are my favorites so far of the MCU. I'm also very eager to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the unreleased movies. However, I don't care about Thor (beyond Chris Hemsworth's perfect pecs) and I actively hate Agents of SUCK.

The MCU has something for everyone... and something not for everyone. You don't have to watch it all in one piece.

I think a lot of people feel this way.

To be perfectly honest, I think it's an inevitable consequence of the decision to make as much Marvel stuff as they did. It would have been better if they'd spaced it out more. But then again, I suppose, capitalism

I don't get this argument about Marvel fatigue or that they will be cut for "financial reasons." Because, "Avengers: Age of Ultron is a massive hit and should be crossing $1 billion worldwide in a couple days. It’s the second-best debut on record, behind only The Avengers."

That does not look like the box office of something people are tired of seeing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, you can always get the "Nobody goes there, it's too crowded" effect. I mean, gajillions of people went to the Transformers movies, but they're universally reviled among fans, Transformers enthusiasts, and people who can read. If everyone OP knows loses interest, that will be more than sufficient for their purposes.

The MCU has always been fairly mediocre and overrated. Give it another movie or two and then the next big thing will come along.

I can see it. I'm losing interest myself. I'm still floating around in fandom but the more movies made the less I want to see the new ones. It's too many :s

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually got tired a while ago, to the extent that I haven't seen any of Phase 2, but I tend to have trouble sustaining interest in anything unless it's coming in small, regular installments or happens all at once. A single movie (or trilogy, if it's all the same story), or a TV series, that's about as much as I can manage, and in the latter case only for a certain number of seasons. The MCU format just isn't something I can sustain interest in. Too much hype over too long a period for relatively little gain.

Just be more selective

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my advice.

I'm not really excited for Age of Ultron all that much.

I AM excited for Civil War, so it's what I'm focusing on. Along with Agent Carter.

But the other Thor movies, Black Panther, Agents of Shield, and Ms. Marvel I could live without.

Just pick and choose. It's not all gonna be great.

Well, AoU wasn't that good of a movie. Especially compared to the likes of CA: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. It was more of a chapter or a place holder for the next set of movies.

For me, when the credits of AoU came up, I thought, "Well, that was something," and really had no desire to see it again. I figured I saw all I needed to see to understand the next batch of MCU movies. And I am hoping the third wave will be better than the second wave's ending. So, don't feel bad and don't lose hope.

Yeah, some film series a like within the MCU, but I'm just hardly caring for it or marveldrones.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me, OP?

Because I feel the very same way. Nested deeply in this fandom three-ish years ago and have made one of my best and closest online friends through it.

Ultron was such a... massive disappointment for me. I wasn't expecting MCU to be golden forever, but I didn't expect it to disappoint me as quickly as it did, full stop.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-05-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen Ultron yet (And am not that excited for it anymore after hearing all the disappointment) but I'm getting there.

Which isn't to say I don't love the films that are already out (some more than others), but I'm not closely following what's to come. I feel like I should be more hyped for some of this stuff.

To be fair, when GOTG 2 happens I imagine I'll be ecstatic, but Civil War just... No. I also ADORE Agent Carter and am looking forward to more of that, but I'm behind on AOS and even though I was enjoying it, I'm having a time caring about catching up.

I still enjoy the MCU as a whole but I was a bit disappointed by AoU, and the more I hear about Cap 3 the more of a clusterfuck I think it's going to be which makes me sad because the Cap movies are my faves after the Thor films.

But I've got some others I'm looking forward to seeing so I'm not burnt out yet.

I'm just bummed that one of my favorite characters (Bruce) isn't going to be in the MCU at all for a hell of a long time, while everyone else's favorites stayed.
I mean one of the main reasons I wanted to see AOU was to see Bruce again.
And now I have to wait ANOTHER four years?
Like holy fuck that's not fair.

I feel the same. Not too long ago I was excited for AoU and how it would tie into AoS, but then it happened and...ok?

Flaws that I shrugged off before have become really grating and I just don't get the enjoyment out of it I once did. I am still looking forward to CW, though I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much since I thin that's part of what made AoU so meh for me.

I'd love to take a step back from MCU fandom and focus on something else for a while, but like you, I can't seem to find another fandom.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about money/box office wise, but I feel like artistically/creatively the MCU is hitting their peak, and it will be downhill after that. Maybe not you know, drastically downhill, but a slow drop off.

Idk though. Just my prediction, I could be utterly wrong (and I would be fine with being proved wrong.)

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-05-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, GOTG 2 is the only MCU movie I'm seriously looking forward to in the near future, simply because I have so much love in my heart for the first movie and I'm knee-deep into everything about it (especially behind-the-scenes stuff with James Gunn and his retinue of regulars. They're pretty chill folks). Plus, it's pretty far removed from the MCU at large -for now-, so I don't have to feel like I need to see every other movie to "get" stuff.

But I get where you're coming from. I just wish they'd pace all of these movies out, because even some of my friends who are into the whole thing part and parcel, are starting to get burnt out a little, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I hope that the movies eventually stop getting made. I'm so tired of Marvel. It's getting to the point where they're beating a dead horse. But money still comes out from the horse so they keep beating it.

Eh.

I'd say I'm at the same interest level that I've been at with it, but I've never been super into it, so that's not saying much. More interested in some of the slightly less prominent heroes and what they do with them, I guess.

Still kinda bummed about Cumberstrange, just because that's the property I was most interested in.

I worry about both Captain Marvel and Black Panther being canceled. If the success starts to decrease, I think the first thing they'll cut is the 'risky' (non-white guy) properties.

That's why as excited as I am for both of those movies, I'm trying to keep it in check until they're actually filming them.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I still love the movies, and am really looking forward to Ant-man, Civil War, Black Panther, Thor 3

I'm not going to dispute your personal feelings, but I find it weird to be worried about Marvel and their financial future specifically at this time.

Remember late 2013? Iron Man 3 had made all the money but most people agreed it had several huge missteps. Thor The Dark World was just... meh on so many levels. And Agents of Shield Season 1 was almost universally reviled. That was all Marvel had to show for in Phase 2 at the time, and coming off of the mega-success of Avengers, fans were concerned for the future of the MCU.

Then in 2014, they released The Winter Soldier. They released GOTG, which few people had expected to ever be as successful as it became. AoS chugged along; I don't think it got any better but it certainly couldn't have gotten any worse, but that doesn't matter because in 2015 we got Agent Carter on the small screen, and better yet, Daredevil. Before AoU dropped, Daredevil was all anyone could talk about. Everyone seems to think it's literally perfect, AND they're actually watching it.

Age of Ultron is a financial home run any way you cut it, and for all its issues (which casual moviegoers don't care about anyway), it's still a better, more watchable film than IM3 and TDW. So yeah, I think saying that AoU's problems are basis for concerns is a little premature. The real test for Marvel's longevity is likely going to be Ant-Man, or Doctor Strange next year. If those movies don't do well, it's probably not going to spell anything good for the other small properties.
