Yep. Pretty much.

Agreed. On the plus side, pretty much every SF/F author I like—including ones I'd never thought of as particularly political—has been very vocal in condemning them.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
In absolute fairness to them, I think it's important to acknowledge that much of their feeling - at least on the less rabid end of things - comes from a similar feeling of disenfranchisement and abandonment. There is this kind of feeling, that they're being pushed out of science fiction. I think it is in many ways unfounded, and I think their broader political and aesthetic positions are generally stupid and the actions they've taken unwarranted and wrong, but there is some genuine feeling involved.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And people have genuine feelings about how women are only good for blowjobs and non-white people are all thugs and criminals and homosexuals should be killed on sight.

They're still scumbags.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
They feel entitled to automatic attention and awards because they're privileged shits, and they can't stand finally not having all the attention and power for themselves so they're throwing a temper tantrum.

>disenfranchisement and abandonment

No doubt the feeling is genuine, but it is probably based on that sociological phenomenon that's had famous studies done on it (the one about men and women talking 50/50 in a classroom where the men felt like the women were dominating the conversation), wherein although they are still receiving a fair share of attention (or representation in SFF), they are so used to their privilege that it *feels* like they are not receiving enough representation.

George R.R. Martin ran the numbers and it just ain't so.

The problem is their feeling of disenfranchisement does match with their actual enfranchisement. Hurt feelings are acceptable when there is an actual reason, these guys, they are just mad no one is treating them like they are the boss. That is just being butthurt.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
their feelings are completely unfounded and they're simply angry they don't have a boys' club ownership over the genre anymore. there's no need to be "fair" in arguing against outright racist, homophobic misogynists.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for this. It also needs to be said that there are a lot of people who sympathize with the Sad Puppies' feelings but want nothing to do with them, even if you take out the involvement of the psychotic Rabid Puppies. There may be problems with the Hugos system but, instead of finding their own way to celebrate work that is meaningful to them, they spoiled one of our (meaning all of fandom, including the SPs) great institutions, at least for this year.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
???????? i have no idea what this is about, can someone explain?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad puppies, rabid puppies, hugo awards.

I agree with you so very much. I didn't even know I liked sci-fi until I was older and stuck with fantasy, horrors, and mysteries but now as an adult I can't get enough of sci-fi stories.

Then to find out by two vocal idiotic groups that I'm not welcome within that genre? A huge FUCK YOU to them.

The Hugo Awards are not the be-all and end-all of SF/F. I know I don't pay them any mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you a fan of written science fiction?

Actually, I think the people behind Sad Puppies felt the exact same way as you do, OP - that they, and people like them, had been left out of the club. So they formed a coalition to get a seat at the table, and I can't blame them.

Rabid Puppies and Vox Day, on the other hand, can go DIAF.

It's a shame that they've both been lumped into the same category by many people, including you. Sad Puppies has been around for several years now, with very little hubbub associated.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Even given that, I don't think the Sad Puppy methods are really a proportionate or acceptable response to that. Both in general, and specifically in inviting in the Rabid Puppies.

Well, that's how they want to paint it.

And then they spend thousands of words talking about how unfair it is that the book might not tell you every theme in the book in case they disagree with one. They ignorantly (or disingenuously) pretend the books they like have no themes whatsoever and are just "neutral" while books with an anti-capitalist bent or strong women or, heaven help us, gay people is all message-y and horrible. *automatically*.

And instead of just saying it's not to their taste - the way most people do - they do their best to vilify those works and the people who read them and try to paint them as "ruining" instead of expanding the genre. They don't just dislike reading these books, they clearly dislike the fact that they exist and other people like them. They insist people don't *actually* like them and only laud them for, I guess, SJW points?

If the sum of what they did was to suggest books they liked, fine, I'm all for that. But they're actively trying to put down and belittle not only the books they don't like and the people who like them. Is it as bad as rabids? No. But it's sure as hell a far sight from "trying to get a seat at the table."

I just think Brad Torgersen is a dipshit. Scroll down for his apology for calling someone gay: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2015/05/04/id-rather-like-men-than-to-be-a-sad-puppy/

Everytime I scroll past this comment I can't help but go "how DARE you!" because I keep thinking you mean actual puppies. Also wow, just from the URL I can't help but hate whoever wrote that.

It's one of the reasons I'm sincerely hoping The Goblin Emperor wins best novel. Not only is it wonderful and deserving of all the awards, but it was written by a woman and has a biracial (goblin/elf) protagonist.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
but it was written by a woman and has a biracial (goblin/elf) protagonist

And this kind of bullshit is exactly why the Sad Puppies evolved. Who gives a shit about the gender of the author or the "biracial" (LOL I THINK YOU MEAN INTERSPECIES OR SOME WORD CONNOTING HALF-BREED) nature of the character?

Text: I started reading SF/F since I could pick up a book.
For me it represented an unlimited world of possibilities, beyond the ordinary.

SF/F has entertained me when I'm bored and lonely. It's made me think more about the world around me. It's seeded new ideas. It's allowed me to travel in space and time to strange worlds while sitting in the comfort of my armchair. It's taught me that not only do dragons exist, but that they can be fought and conquered.

It inspired me to pick up a pen and write my own stories and create my own worlds. Writing has sometimes been the only thing worth doing.

And then, this happens.

This bunch of butthurt pathetic children show up, and pull this stunt. Trying to tell people what they should be reading. Trying to actually LIMIT the genre according to their hateful (and batshit insane) views. Trying to tell me, and people like me, that we weren't wanted, that we don't belong, that we can't sit in the treehouse.

FUCK YOU. SF/F is for EVERYBODY.
