Things you think you should know how to do/about, but don't. (Or forgot.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some things you should be able to do or have knowledge of, but don't for whatever reason?

(Please no shaming.)

*No shaming, please. I do know how to write, I reworded but apparently didn't edit everything.

Long division. It was always really hard for me - yay dyscalculia - but now that I've been out of practice for so long? Forget it.

Pretty much anything internet-y really.

I can't swim. I could when I was a kid, took lessons and all, but I tried again recently and couldn't. And I don't much care to learn.

I can barely swim myself. I never had lessons as a child because my parents kept coming up with excuses to not get me into a class. All I can really do is a quick dog paddle and swim on my back. And I can KIND of sort of do the regular swim thing, but I'm, super slow, uncoordinated and as soon as my legs flip down and I try to float, whatever it's called, I start to sink and panic.

This has nothing to do with my weight or anything. I just can't get my arms and legs to take the commands my brain is telling me to do and work right, so I panic and flail enough to get to the side of the pool and hang out there.

Ugh yes me too, except I do want to learn. Last time I took a swim lesson was in fourth grade gym class, and the only thing I can do right is float (very relaxing tho).

How to change out a faucet. Seriously, I work at a faucet company and I can't even change out my own!

- Snapping with my left hand
- math, especially algebra (I want to be great at it again orz)
- back country camping
- first aid
- sew clothes without a pattern
- self defense (aka karate matter skills)

Back country camping is super fun if you get a good group to go with. It's pretty easy too, honestly.

Carry canteens and water purification tablets, carry dehydrated food, bed roll, maybe tent, small propane stove if fire regulations, bug spray, first aid, cell phone, area map, compass, garbage bag, rope, bear spray if bear warnings.

Pick an area with a trail! Hike the trail! Do cool/dumb shit with your friends (like going down river rapids)! Hang your food/garbage away from your campsite! Always put out your fires! Take all your garbage with you! Don't shit where you sleep! Be liberal with the bug spray!

And don't lose the map or you gon git Blair Witch'd.

Cooking. Even weirder because I can do literally everything around the house, except cook the meals.

I should definitely know the Malaysian highways better, but I don't. They're really confusing and I'm pretty geographically challenged in the first place, unless I'm walking.

I can't whistle very well. I was in my teens before I could kind of do it and I have to put a bit of effort into doing it to make it sound somewhat okay. =/

I can't snap with my right hand at all either, despite being a righty. =p

- The difference between AM and PM, I keep reading up on it and I forget it 2 seconds later.
- Knowing when to put "and" or "to" in Norwegian, it is the same sound, but different spelling and it is more complicated than it sounds.
- Fahrenheit, or any system that isn't celsius or the metric.
- African, South American and Asian geography.
- The names of most common birds, plants and trees.
- Reading an analog clock fast. (I never learnt as a child, I was taught the digital one)
- Also tipping, I've never had a need for it, so when I go abroad I have no idea how to tip, seriously how much money am I supposed to leave? Also it goes against everything I believe in, it isn't my job to pay the wages of someone else's employees.

I could go on, but I'll just stop there, there are loads of stuff I should know, but don't.

A is before P, therefore AM is before PM?

And +1000 on the tipping. I find the whole thing horribly embarrassing, and employers should certainly pay a living wage. Also, the master-servant connotations are icky.

What is left and what is right.

Like, I technically know, but it does not come to me naturally at all. I really have to think to remember which is which. It leads to a lot of "to the other left" situations.

Going to the gyno. I'm not sexually active (and have never been), and it's not something my mom ever talked to me about. But I'm kind of old to have never been, and a relative who's only five years older than me just had a cancer scare that ended up being benign and probably the result of long-untreated PCOS.

So I need to go. I've picked out a doctor, but I haven't called. I've read up on what to expect but I still feel like I don't REALLY know anything and it's going to be this hugely foreign, awkward experience. And even though I don't really think there's anything I can do that's WRONG before going, I still feel like I'll find something that can not right and do it.

I also need to go to the dentis (10 years since I've been) and eye doctor (2 years since I've been). So really this just needs to be the summer of medical treatment for me, I guess, and I feel really dumb about all of it.
