Mr Robot

[personal profile] cushlamochree 2015-05-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Did anyone else watch the pilot for the USA show Mr Robot? It's on Youtube (link) and I watched it today and I'm honestly not sure whether or not I think it's good. Really well shot, a lot of interesting ideas, but also some stuff that seemed really flat and strange. I did have a lot of fun watching it, definitely going to watch the next episode (when it comes out in like two months), but I'm curious what anyone else who watched it thought.

(also it had Christian Slater in it, so it's definitely going to get cancelled)

e: it's also pretty cyberpunk, if you're into that kind of thing

Pushing Daisies

I miss this show so much. If this show got a movie or another season, what would you like to see explored? What was your favorite part of the original series?

Ned was my fave with Emerson and Olive as close seconds. I just adored how positive and sweet Ned was. I loved Emerson's banter with everyone (especially Olive), and Olive's crush on Ned.

If there was a movie, I'd want Olive to find out about Ned's power and see her reaction, and I want to find out about Ned's dad. And for Emerson to be reunited with his daughter.

I haven’t been here in months, but last time I was here there was a thread about what we wanted to see in the future of PD, to which I say again, hell yeah!!!

My dream continuation is a TV movie or miniseries where Lily & Vivian kick off their Darling Mermaid Darlings tour, and Chuck, Ned, and Olive go along with them. Emerson stays behind to spend time with Penny, but while the others are away he starts unraveling some threads regarding the mystery of Ned’s dad. Meanwhile, across the pond the gang catches wind of Chuck’s father, and between trying to track him down and the aunts’ tour, a chase across Europe ensues (I want to see what the rest of the world looks like through the show’s uniquely rose-colored glasses). Along the way they address:
-The aunts’ reaction to Chuck being alive
-Vivian and Lily reconciling re: the Charles Charles affair
-What was up with Ned’s dad & company
-What was up with the pocket watches
-Olive to get looped in to Ned’s secret finally! (Who DIDN'T want that to happen?)
-What happened to Alfredo Aldarisio (who even remembers that guy?)
-I also kind of want to see Dwight Dixon revived for one minute, but that’s mostly because I loved Stephen Root.

(I really need to write this fanfic… someday I’ll have the time.)

Favorite Part of the Original... hmmmmmm… that’s tough. I loved literally everything about it - it was one of those things that was like the creator looked inside your head personally and decided to add everything they saw in there just to appeal to you. What immediately comes to mind though (which would be sorely lacking in my ‘ideal’ sequel) would be the Pie Hole + the attached apartment complex. What lovely architecture.

Every Raul Esparza fan remembers Alfredo Aldarisio, and they want justice for him. (Judging by my Tumblr dash anyway)

(AYRT) I was going to be surprised Raul Esparza of all people has a Tumblr following, but then I remembered how popular "Hannibal" was when I had a Tumblr and how great he was (is? He probably cheated death again) as Chilton.

EC predictions?

SmackDown killed me dead last night.

I'm falling more and more in love with Kevin Owens. So much so I kinda forgot that Dean and Seth even have a match at EC.

Chronicles of Narnia

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I read Neil Gaiman's take on what happened to Susan a while back and it was so underwhelming. I don't know what I was expecting but the sexual turn at the end seemed so unnecessary.

C.S. Lewis said he was going to write another story about Susan and what happened to her but he died before he did. I've always been curious what he was going to do.

What do you feel about Susan's fate? Or the ending itself?

The thing about Susan not going to Heaven at the end of the Last Battle is... she's not dead yet, so obviously she isn't going to Heaven. Everybody else was killed in a train crash, but she's okay.

I always figured she'd go when it was her time, though. Once a king or queen in Narnia, always a king or queen in Narnia. Plus, a tumblr user whose name I forget points out that Aslan DID tell them all to grow up in their own world and come to know him as Jesus instead--the other kids still seemed extremely wrapped up in Narnia, but Susan was at least trying to grow up in her own world (we don't know whether she's come to know him as Jesus instead, it's never said, but I like to think she does, just because I like the idea of her being Aslan's final success story).

I liked The Last Battle. I know a lot of people don't, but I did, and I feel like it had a positive effect on me as a kid.

Re: Chronicles of Narnia

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with a lot of this. I think most people get hung up on Polly's words about Susan, and them meaning that Susan having an interest in feminine things means she won't go to heaven (when Lewis states it's the fact that she's let material concerns take over her life).

I agree that she will likely get into heaven in the end. I feel like the reason she was left alive was so she had a chance to find her path again, and I'm sure Aslan would've helped her find it if need be (I would love to read that).

I also enjoyed The Last Battle. I didn't think I would but I really liked Tirian and seeing all the old characters again.

DA

this whole convo is making me feel so much better about The Last Battle, so thank you nonnies for that!

And now I have a sudden urge to read fix-it-fic of Susan running into Aslan again in the "real world" and having to go back to Narnia to do queen stuff.

+1. These are all really good ways to think about Susan. I feel better now too.

I really disliked the Last Battle but only partly because of what happened to Susan. I also thought it was unnecessary and even a little vicious of Lewis to kill off the parents in the train wreck (they didn't even know Narnia existed!) and I'd be really angry if I went to Heaven and everybody there did nothing but run and eat fruit. That's not Heaven. That's a very low budget weight loss spa.

We're Alive A Story of Survival

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-05-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I finished it today. HOLY SHIT! I'll never find a podcast as good as that.

I loved the ending. What had been going on with the zombies and how they were created was fascinating (though I hated the nickname "Ink"). I especially loved what happened to Scratch, I hated her so much.

I think the deaths that hit me most were Angel's and Datu's. I totally called Lizzy's death but did not expect Saul's.

It was nice to see what had happened with the colonies 15 years in the future and that everything wasn't sunshine and flowers.

Re: We're Alive A Story of Survival

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2015-05-31 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay you finished it \:D/

One of my favourite things was that it evens the scales, not too majorly, by suggesting that if there are zombie outliers like Ink, why not humans too (like Saul and Tanya). Which also let me hope for Datu to be immune, and boy was it dragged out waiting to die, because DATUUUUU. He's got brainy brains! You can't afford to lose those! And he was the best that too (Angel saying something like, "Datu's crying again. Everything's back to normal." Is one of my favourite lines).

Saul though. I wasn't expecting it either, so by the time it was clear it was a suicide mission, I was stressing how he hadn't resolved anything with his mom. I'm a sort of sucker when stories make someone who wasn't the first lead (or pov in this case) the ultimate hero/chosen one/martyr. I remember listening to this on a train ride to or from work, and I tore up during his last phone call. That sure was embarrassing.

I still think Scratch was a villain sue (really, boss guy? You patiently let with the established treachery have a speech, why exactly.). So yeah, Bill dealing with her was very satisfying. It'd been hinted that he had blood on his hands after serving the army, and I kinda like that he didn't want Riley to carry that over her head. Yes. Let him be the cruel revenge guy ♥

By the way, so many awesome friendships and odd great pairings in this show. Riley and Bill, Michael and Kelly (ship it), Saul and Victor (ship it) and CJ (ot3 it), Michael and his newfound army posse who (ship that), Tanya and Kelly, Datu and the genius old guy from the colony, Hope and Tanya, Lizzy and the giant prisoner guy, and so on. Hell, I actually would have liked to hear what Scratch and Lizzy talked about during their sessions. Plus I got my Victor/Kelly canonized at the end! I think?

I also liked the imperfect future. And another thing I liked was people reluctantly falling into place, and thriving (and help others to do so) on the roles landed on them. CJ leading the colony, even if she despised what the place meant at first; Riley coming back to the fold, probably finally coping in healthy ways, and grief counselling.

I'm not excited about Lockdown, but I'll give it a try since sticking with WA paid off. So glad I listened to this show :)

Lord of the Rings

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm happy to talk about anything Tolkien-related.

How about Sindar/Teleri elves? Who's your favorite?

I've recently come to the conclusion that Cirdan is probably the most underrated character there is. The guy was a serious badass.

Cirdan is awesome. I find Thingol and interesting character even if he's a horrible father. Does Luthien count as Sindar? I get comfused as to who is what sometimes. But I absolutely and totally adore her. Also Celeborn is awesome. I mean, he's the reason Galadriel stayed in Middle Earth, so you know he has to be pretty awesome.

Re: Lord of the Rings

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
It does feel like Luthien is in her own category completely. She's too awesome to be a mere elf. :)

I actually don't think Thingol is a terrible father and I was surprised how mainstream this idea is. I guess I'm just so familiar with the things he does being common in old stories and myths that it didn't seem at all out-of-place. To me, he seemed like he loved his daughter a great deal but then made a really shitty decision that blew up in his face.

I have the same feeling about Elrond (except that he didn't make any shitty decisions). I was so surprised how many people thought Elrond was in the wrong not to let Arwen and Aragorn marry right away (or whatever their issue is). What he's doing is so common in medieval-type stories and he actually is very fair to Arwen and Aragorn. I can sort of see where people come from with Thingol (especially if they are pushing modern ideals onto the text) but I am utterly baffled when it comes to Elrond.

Celeborn doesn't get enough love in my opinion. He's always been a favorite of mine. I'm also coming to really like Oropher, and Thranduil is definitely one of my first loves.

Re: Lord of the Rings

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-05-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
See, Elrond I get. The idea of Aragorn proving his worth makes sense in the context. Thingol, though, juts outright didn't want Luthien to marry Beren. And the task he gave Beren was literally impossible for Beren to accomplish. It was Luthien herself who managed it. Thingol knew he was sending Beren to his death. That was what he expected to result. And considering what Morgoth and Sauron do to prisoners, likely it would be a very unpleasant death. It did result in Finrod and others being tortured and killed.

Re: Lord of the Rings

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that makes him a bad father. From his perspective, he's trying to protect his daughter. I personally believe that he didn't think Beren would actually get that far. Thingol didn't know about Finrod's promise, so as far as Thingol knew, Beren was on his own. Or he would get human help. Thingol was utterly disdainful of humans; he wouldn't have given Beren credit to even get so far as Sauron's doorstep, let alone all the way to Morgoth.

And, I feel he also believed that as soon as Beren realized what a challenge it was going to be, he would give up. I'm sure Thingol wouldn't have cried any tears if Beren had died in the pursuit but he would've thought that justified because of the initial infraction Beren made that Luthien had Thingol promise not to kill him for.

I feel like Thingol is aware that his daughter is the most beautiful creature in the world and people will covet her, instead of love her. He doesn't believe that Beren and Luthien actually love each other. But when Thingol realizes that they do actually love each other and would go through all that turmoil to be together, he softens and even helps Beren out.

I get a lot of King Tritan from The Little Mermaid vibe from Thingol actually. I didn't think he was a horrible father either, though he did bad stuff too.

So, the shitty decision was to send Beren after the Silmaril. Finrod's deaths, Luthien's involvement, Daeron's disappearance - those were the things that blew up in Thingol's face. He didn't anticipate that, and if he had I'm sure he would've made a different decision. As it was, as soon as Luthien is gone, he spends all his resources trying to find her again. My take was that he was concerned for her. I feel that many of his actions stem from love of Luthien. He made bad choices in that regard but that was his underlying motivation.

I went through a big Celeborn fangirl phase after reading a long First Age Celeborn/Galadriel fic that made me totally fall in love with the guy (or that author's version of him, rather).
