Is egalitarian the same as Feminist?

Re: inspired by a comment from a thread further up

That's legitimately completely a matter of opinion.

Nope.

Feminism is about promoting women in the face of the patriarchal system while egalitarianism is about promoting men in the face of feminism.

That's preposterous. Egalitarianism is largely a meaningless alternate term for feminists who don't want to use the "feminist" label because they bought into the idea that it's been "tainted" -- usually by regressives who dredge up the loopiest examples of feminism to paint the whole movement with the same brush, assuming they didn't just invent the example out of whole cloth.

Well, I think it's fair to call oneself an egalitarian as opposed to some of the "gender war" crowd that followed the kookier Second Wave rhetoric.

I thought it was about ethics in Egg journalism.

Eggsactly. Ethics in egg journalism falls under the egg umbrella.

No and yes.

"Feminism" as a word doesn't have one single definition. There are versions of "feminism" which are logically worth calling "feminist" that are terribly sexist and ridiculous; they just exalt "womanhood" in some sense, however ugly and terrible.

But historically, certain cultures have been so sexist that the main groups of "feminists" and "egalitarians" ended up moving in the same direction, and many decent sorts have made a point of being "feminist" in the sense of advocating for women, for egalitarian reasons.

Of course now, with several different varieties of "feminism" fighting each other and going different directions, "feminist" (a bit like "socialist" or "liberal") is a less clear term.

The term egalitarian is just as tricky. There are people who see all feminism as trying to advance women at the expense of men and call themselves egalitarians as a way of disavowing feminism. While others look at egalitarianism as the true goal while still acknowledging that current gender gap that exists in all kinds of areas.

It depends. If it is about equal rights and understands that men have privilege and the need to promote women's rights and just is uncomfortable with the feminist label, sure, though I sideye anyone who wants to get rid of the word feminist with all its associated history and the women who fought for what we have now.

If, on the other hand, it is denying privilege or claiming that women have privilege now and promoting mens rights over women then no.

Nope. If you won't call yourself a feminist because not all feminists are perfect, then you're not one.

In the circles where I pace, egalitarian is the opposite of complementarianism. (Spellcheck says that's not a word--yet it is.) It's the difference between a marriage where spouses treat each other as equals, making decisions together and parceling out tasks according to strengths, and a marriage where gender roles are the norm as far as tasks are concerned and a husband has a final "vote" for any decisions the couple might make.

Hell no.

Egalitarians value equality but don't actually care enough to do what's necessary to achieve that equality. They're frequently spineless NIMBYs.

Yes, because all people who call themselves feminists are tireless activists all the time! Not one slacktivist among them!
Oh wait.
