I'm a transman and idk, I get that people want characters that are like them, but I just really don't wanna read all the angst associated with being trans. Hits too close to home?

It's the same reason I don't go to local trans-meet-ups. They're so darn depressing.

I feel this. I like reading fic that involves characters who are actually trans, but I get kind of annoyed when those fics are like 90% angst. I'm not saying that I've never struggled due to being trans because I've definitely experienced turmoil but in general I'm a pretty content person and when I'm angsting, it's usually not because I'm trans. I've got other problems too, jeez.

It feels a lot that when a character is written as trans all their problems have to revolve around that. I guess because otherwise the people would forget?

And I'm here like, nah, I've got the treatment I've wanted, and I'm cool right now. Let's angst about those social anxiety problems now.

There isn't much appeal.

And I guess happy trans-characters are out of the question in the first place? Admittedly I haven't done much looking, but usually fics labeled with trans-characters aren't going to be happy ones.

Yeah, I think it's kind of like how when gay characters first really started appearing in media, pretty much their ENTIRE storyline was about facing homophobia, generally struggling with their sexuality, sometimes contracting AIDS, and pretty much nothing else. We still see that of course (because it's not like people in real life don't struggle with those things), but they're also a lot more likely to have other issues and storylines that aren't related to their sexuality because it's become a bit more normalized. Hopefully the same thing will happen to trans characters both in fandom and outside of it

This. It annoys me so much. And it's not just in trans-headcanon fic. When a fic is tagged with "Female Character" and "Women Being Awesome" 99 times out of a hundred you can be sure that everything in that story will revolve completely about their female-ness and their not-a-male-ness, instead of "here is a great character who is also female."

And I will never understand the compulsion for slash fans to make every single thing about two characters' lives revolve around their repressed homosexuality and their repressed/unrequited love for each other or their domestic problems. Apparently, gay people do not get stressed or burnt-out by their jobs, do not have difficulties with personal issues that have nothing to do with being gay, and do not have normal human reactions to traumatic events and morally-difficult situations -- any angst or character development or dark attitudes they may show are "actually" solely because they are in love with a guy. Bleh.

I kind of understand the "it's all about gayngst" thing because it gives the story a forbidden love, Romeo and Romeo sort of vibe. "The whole world is against us!" I mean, teenagers eat that shit up.

I can't say anything about trayngst, though.

"It feels a lot that when a character is written as trans all their problems have to revolve around that."

This makes me so angry. So so angry.

Not only is it offensive because it boils people down to a single trait, it's sloppy writing!

I get the feeling these headcanons aren't drawn from the person actually going to a trans meetup, and rather drawing the angst from their knowledge base of Glee episodes.

I think I'm starting to feel more embarrassed of most trans headcanons than I am of cartoon homophobia in fic.

Well, to be frank, I haven't gone to one either. Friend told me they were very depressing, at least in our home town, and I'm not a very social person anyway.

I think most trans headcanons and how should I say it, how formulaic they are, might as well come from limited access to resources (Glee-episodes and what have you). That makes some of them very embarrassing (I find some parts of fandoms who like to insist on character's transness very hard to deal with) but most of it is just very very boring.

We need variety. And less screaming, preferably.

It probably does depend on the crowd that week, but the ones I was receptionisting for (lgbtq* centre) definitely being a support group on top of discussion meant it would be depressing at many points. There is also, anger, hope, humour, and small talk, so I would probably go for the more general "emotional". It was popular enough to get a split for youth and another for friends and family of.

Yes. Less screaming por favor.

A good friend of my used to be involved with a Pride center a lot, and he said he had to leave because it was so full of emoting, drama, and angst. I mean, I understand why it kind of has to be that way (it's a space for people to work out their issues) but I also get it can be quickly exhausting to spend a lot of time in that environment.

Oh definitely. I'm lucky that mine is not only well run, with a lot of varied programming, but that it attracts all types too since it serves as a spot with connections to near every group and business in the city. My biggest reason for volunteering was to meet and talk to more people from all walks of life. Otoh, I know folk who don't enjoy the atmosphere of such places, and also don't feel the need to use them. Same with uni clubs, or recreation groups (those don't tend to act as confessional though, as they're more social).

Tbf, I had to quit volunteering once the duties changed.

Aaaaaaand this right here is why I don't like reading media about LGBT rights or fanfic that is focused solely on characters angsting about all the horrible things that are going to happen to them.

It's pretty common in historical stuff, but even in stuff where the setting is COMPLETELY FICTIONAL (like fantasy worlds).

Like, damn, I get enough of this bullshit angst and worry IRL, I do not want to read about it in fiction! Find a new source of conflict for the characters! I would love to read something where the two main characters are gay, but they don't die, and the angst doesn't revolve around "we can never be together b/c we're gonna get murdered SO ROMANTIC", but instead is just normal romantic comedy cliches complete with an airport reunion at the end.

I JUST WANT HAPPY FLUFF TO READ DAMMIT.

I get this too anon <3

I like a little wavering, "is it okay that I like this boy?" angst but when it's laid on thick with homophobic parents throwing lamps or bullies using slurs or MURDER that's where I gotta check out.
