Word. Especially when they pull the perfectly passing character trope out of their asses too. Not only is it rubbing my transness in my face, but also rubbing my physical flaws in my face too.

I hate this so much. It really annoyed me when parts of The Walking Dead fandom went through this trans!Daryl phase where they headcanoned him as FtM. Really?

That's completely opposite to my feelings. I vastly prefer perfectly passing trans headcanons over effeminate FTMs and masculine MTFs. The latter fll into the old stereotype of trasngender people hilariously failing to perform as their actual gender, because feminity is for ~real~ women and masculinity for ~real~ men.

I'm a transman and idk, I get that people want characters that are like them, but I just really don't wanna read all the angst associated with being trans. Hits too close to home?

It's the same reason I don't go to local trans-meet-ups. They're so darn depressing.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this. I like reading fic that involves characters who are actually trans, but I get kind of annoyed when those fics are like 90% angst. I'm not saying that I've never struggled due to being trans because I've definitely experienced turmoil but in general I'm a pretty content person and when I'm angsting, it's usually not because I'm trans. I've got other problems too, jeez.

I get the feeling these headcanons aren't drawn from the person actually going to a trans meetup, and rather drawing the angst from their knowledge base of Glee episodes.

I think I'm starting to feel more embarrassed of most trans headcanons than I am of cartoon homophobia in fic.

Aaaaaaand this right here is why I don't like reading media about LGBT rights or fanfic that is focused solely on characters angsting about all the horrible things that are going to happen to them.

It's pretty common in historical stuff, but even in stuff where the setting is COMPLETELY FICTIONAL (like fantasy worlds).

Like, damn, I get enough of this bullshit angst and worry IRL, I do not want to read about it in fiction! Find a new source of conflict for the characters! I would love to read something where the two main characters are gay, but they don't die, and the angst doesn't revolve around "we can never be together b/c we're gonna get murdered SO ROMANTIC", but instead is just normal romantic comedy cliches complete with an airport reunion at the end.

I JUST WANT HAPPY FLUFF TO READ DAMMIT.

I wish there were clearer lines drawn between "people doing this" and "people doing this obnoxiously and insensitively"

If one side declares all trans headcanons annoying and one side declares hating trans headcanons as transphobic always, no good representation comes out of it and nobody wins

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say there was a pretty bright line. It is people not doing it, then on the other side of the line, people doing something offensive.

So don't do it. Or at least don't do it and pretend it is anything other than satisfying a sexual fetish.

In my observations, SJW's tend to listen and back off when trans people speak about trans headcanons. If you say why you don't like them, you might even get some people to stop making them.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Where have you taken these observations, because most times you confront an SJW with contrary information they go into a rage and call you a fake!transperson or accuse you of carrying internal transphobia.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda stealth!trans online, as in I don't mention my gender anywhere. I kind of prefer it that way.
Also, I don't even want people to stop making them, I just kinda wish there was a universal way to block them all, since they're so omnipresent.

Sometimes people just don't feel like reading about topics that they're struggling with IRL. Makes sense to me, and while yea, some of the more rude fans might not respect your opinion (and might 'accuse' you of something) I think most people would sympathize.

Not that you need to tell anyone, just saying I see your point of view and feel like others would too.

I don't actively look for them, so I don't have much reason to point out how much they suck when I'm in places where others are enjoying them. Then again, some of these folk will go out of their way to find someone is willing, and apply a ridiculously presumptuous ad hominem to validate their boring ideas. Ah well ♥

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been called a transphobe for not buying that Lars is 1000% trans because of all the "canon proof" (Steven touching his chest means telling him he's "passing"! Lars ripping the photo is cause he doesn't want people to see him wearing 'male clothes' (???) Lars is acting macho cause he wants to pass! Lars is a jerkass borderline bully because he's trans and hurts inside!)

I dislike Lars and don't want him to be some kind of transman icon, but I'm transphobic if I don't make a disclaimer that I'm also trans despite that I really don't fucking want to give out such an information when unanon.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just get tired of them because they just don't seem realistic.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not trans but I got the same feeling when asexual headcanons were in fashion. Having my orientation being fetishized was not cool. And quite a few people wouldn't warn for it either, so I got to have PTSD and anxiety attacks (I was subjected to corrective rape and now reading about asexuality is not a thing I want to do).

Anyway, I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get what you're saying.

I mean, if you're trans, being online is one place you can just be the gender you want to be, not a qualified version.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I headcanon some characters as trans/genderfluid and believe others should headcanon characters anyway they want as long as it doesn't conflict much with canon material, but I do agree that sometimes people can do it without much thought

For instance, why do all the tomboyish girls get headcanoned as transboys? Why is every slightly effeminate gay man a transwoman?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
GOD anon, I feel this confession deep in my soul.

in fact I once made a similar confession to a fandom tumblr confession community (anonymously) and received nothing but angry reblogs from mostly cis people laughing at me and saying I was obviously not really trans, or was a troll, or heaven forbid a "truscum," because if I were truly trans I wouldn't want to have been born cis, I guess. if I were truly trans I'd spend 100% of my life thinking and talking about being trans and trans headcanons, and would never use "outdated" terminology to talk about MYSELF. it was ridiculous. and honestly a more upsetting experience than outright transphobic insults I've received in my lifetime. I'd rather be outright hated than doubted and told my life experience isn't real or authentic enough by some 14 year old on tumblr.

I totally, totally feel you on this and agree about coming to fandom for escapism. and as long as we're on the subject, why does all fanart of ftm headcanons have to show them shirtless just so they can feature them wearing the fucking binders? binders aren't fun or interesting, they're goddamn painful– it actively pisses me off that every ftm headcanon is accompanied by slogs of binder fanart. fetishistic is the right word.

In real life my parents won't speak to me and I have like two cis friends who actually respect me, so it's nice to know that there are communities where people can sometimes obnoxiously overdo it with the acceptance.
Though back when I couldn't transition trans stories were painful to read and often made me furious because in the end I was jealous of fictional characters getting their lives sorted. Maybe figure out your issues, OP.

All this hate for nonbinary and tucutes comes from the same place of jelousy. Every time I catch myself going "wow this asshole expects people to say "faeself" and goes on and off hormones three times a month because they don't like the body hair, while I had to fight nail and tooth for 15 years to live as an actual REAL woman" And then I check myself and realize that the fae person is emphatically not the problem and move the hell on with my day.
