"Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't a real thing you chucklefucks. When did the LGBT movement start accepting such insane crap. Unless you fall into those four categories it's not a real element on the spectrum worthy of note. This is harming the movement by being so divisive and leading us into petty infights that distract from the real struggle. Gay patriarchy cabal please save us like you did with stonewall.

I recently waded through the comments section on Know Your Meme's "Preferred Pronouns" article. I don't think I'll be capable of being offended by posts like this for at least another week or two.

Haha I was thinking of 2s too. Like, queer alphabet is only limited if you're a pedant.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I do think the A should be on the acronym, but I actually kind of agree with this otherwise. The community has become so obsessed with micro-labeling everything that everything's muddled and nothing's getting done. You've got cisgender, straight people demanding to be included under the "queer" umbrella because they're kinky. You've got the whole "tucute"/"truscum" nonsense.

The LGBTA community is not a place to desperately seek a sense of uniqueness, and I loathe that in a lot of ways, it's become that.

i......agree tbqh. as a queer lady w/ an NB fiancé and mostly queer friends, i agree.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
But genderqueer identity isn't about uniqueness, any more than trans or gay identity. Yes, there are fringes of the gender conversation that *do* get into that territory, very much so, but the fact is that gender is not a two-category thing, and genderqueer (and nonbinary, which seems to be coming into its own as an umbrella term in this area), is just a term that recognizes that and makes space for people who don't fit into either of the boxes constructed by recent Western culture.

Yes, you can be an asshole about it. But that's a problem with you being an asshole, not with the term genderqueer.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Genderqueer or how to be ironically sexist by putting "boy things" here and "girl things" there.

I hate the genderqueer title. Because how dare someone tell me the things I like and do are "boy things." No, they're girls things. I am a girl and I do them. There shouldn't be a goddamn box, you sexist, narrow minded pig.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I LOVE that. "Excuse you, pink things don't mean you are a girl. And playing with toy trucks doesn't make you a boy!"

"OMG. I was born a girl BUT I love sports and cutting my hair short. I must be genderqueer. :3. Now i have to come out to my parents!"

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But...that's literally not how it works. That's not how genderqueer people use the term. And if you take this tack, while it's very very valid and important to acknowledge that Being a Girl can look like a lot of different things and involve a lot of things coded as masculine, it's troublingly like biological essentialism if you insist that this means EVERYONE has to either identify as the gender associated with their physical sex or else identify as trans. That's every bit as limiting as saying that All Girls Must Do Only Girl Things, etc.

You're an asshole and probably a bigot, but:

I am kind of concerned about all these assigned-female-at-birth kids declaring they aren't girls without courting any kind of at least situational androgyny that would more solidly express physical or gender dysphoria.* I'm worried what they've been taught about gender roles; that they think not being a "typical girl" as portrayed by mainstream media means they aren't female. That in our rush to label every identity we've just fallen into the trap of gender essentialism (I like sports and math and video games, ergo I'm not a girl).

That being said, fuck no I'm not going to bother them about it! For some it might be a phase, for some it might be their real ingrained identity, and in both cases it's none of my fucking business on a personal level.

*I know a lot of the tumblr kids are minors living at home and thus in a closet so that's a factor.

I think you're trolling, but I agree, Genderqueer is stupid, unnecessary, and a way to claim you're a special LGBT person. I'm sorry, I can't. Identify in whatever way makes you happy, but I don't see how that affects your gender in terms of functioning in society unless you actively want to live as the opposite.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
i tend to avoid people who make a big stink about their gender identity, but i have enough decency to call them by what they want to be called.

though most genderqueer people don't hit that sweet spot of androgyny so i still think in terms of he/she

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You'r right, I just never bothered to from a definite gender identity. It was clearly to much work.

Re: "Gender Queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are way too obsessed with (real and imaginary) gender stereotypes. They whine about gender essentialism and how gender is a social construct and in the same breath make up even more stereotypes and gender labels.
I actually don't really think genders are a thing. I think there are roughly five vrsions: Feeling comfortable with the sex you have (male and female), not feeling vomfortable with the sex you have and aspiring/wishing to have a body of the opposite sex (transsexual) and feeling uncomfortable with either physical sex (which would probably correspond with androgyny or agender/gender neutral). Everything else, be it gender fluidity, genderqueerness that comes without any kind of physical dysphoria and all those cute little genderspecial terms are made-up and only an attempt to seem special and more interesting.
I'll still use the pronouns people pick (unless they are completely outlandish) bit I still don't believe in the whole gender debate.
