4. It's hard to get to know people past the entries, but AIM is likely a good way to try. Just keep holding more conversations!

12. I LOVE Ender's Game and it's sequels. I am not too crazy about the Shadow series... Still, I think the original arc is awesome. I even shipped Ender with Petra and doodled "piggies" on my college notebooks. I am convinced that EG would make an awesome anime (though I know it ain't happening) and imagine what the opening and ending themes would look like. You are so not alone.

36. You are not alone, either. As a die-hard manga otaku I find that anime adaptations can never live up to thier manga roots. The art just lacks character, lacks the artist's unique touch. On the other hand, I really hate manga adaptations of anime.

12 Not OP

[identity profile] jesscheaux.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! I'm glad you like the originals too, I haven't read the Shadow series yet (but I've bought them all LOL) but it's good to see someone who isn't completely obsessed with the Shadows and ignores the other ones! ^_^ THE PIGGIES ARE SO AWESOME! Their whole back story just totally blew my mind :DDD

I heard Ender's Game is TRYING to be made into a movie but they keep having issues over and over. I lament over the fact that they didn't make it like 10 years ago when they could've gotten Haley Joel Osmet to play Ender, I think he would've been perfect. He had that tortured little boy, I'm wise beyond my years face. <3

Awww, I know how it is. When I first started out on LJ though, I was very lucky to find a few good friends and it just expanded from there... I made friends by comments on communities and such, so it's just kinda random. One thing you COULD do is participate in any friending memes that go around. That's a good way to make quick friends. But I totally understand about the "friendly as ever" stuff and hardly any comments.

Anyway, I hope you do make friends soon. A lot of this secret reminds me of how I used to feel. ♥

4 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's the memes that have...made a mess of things. There are a handful that don't ever comment, don't bother to reply to comments I leave them, or just...plain ignore me. I'm too nervous about posting in comms or feel that I have nothing to contribute to them. And it's not that I want people to comment on my entries...I just wish they would at least try to converse back with me when I comment on their entries. But I am glad I am not the only one who seems to have run-ins with the "friendly as ever" people who never both to notice others, either (outside their bffs anyway).

Thank you for your support, though. I will keep trying. :3! I'm really grateful that you can understand me.

7. Wordy McWord. You'd think that once the books came out we could finally move on and people could ship whomever they like, but apparently that's not the case.

12. After over-analyzing it in 9th grade English, I never want to talk about Ender's Game ever again.

20. That honestly made me lol. You rock.

31. Heeeeeee. Agreed. To quote TWoP "They killed Joey Potter!!!!"

12. Aw, that's too bad. I've had to over-analyze To Kill A Mocking Bird 2 years in a row + summer because not all of the schools had the same curriculum, but that hasn't made me hate it intensely.

Idon'tgetit. WHAT? (Is anyone in SPN fandom actually sane? I want to join, but...)

[identity profile] overstreets.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I AM!

It's sort of a wonderful, yet horrible fandom. Wonderful because there's such good STUFF, like fic and icons and fanart and essay-thingies and official magazines and comic books and such. And the actors do conventions and they are hilarious, and people always bring back amazing footage of them.

Horrible because there are elitists, a shit-load of "oppressed" het fans, people who apparently hate the show yet are still in the fandom, wank x billionty, insane zealots, and that sort of stuff.

Sometimes I think people are better off just watching the show and completely ignoring the fandom. But then again, there are some wonderful people there and luckily I've got the sane ones on my flist. Well, mostly. All in all, I'm glad I joined the fandom. Most of the time, anyway.

4. Yeah. I sympathise. On LJ, it can often feel as though everyone is greatest and most bestest pals with everyone else, except you, left out in the cold. My advice is to give up on LJ as a means to make friends. Okay, that wasn't very helpful, was it? But all the tips I can give you are fairly self-evident, and as you seem like a thoughtful kind of person, I'm sure you'll have worked them out already. Anyway, here's my few pennies (I am English! I will not be oppressed by the US 'cents'!).

Know your audience. Don't write about what bores you, 'cos it'll show, but don't write purely for yourself either. Are there people on your flist who like meta? Write that. Like a particular character that doesn't feature much in fanfic? Turn out a few drabbles. If you want to write about yourself, make it funny or satirical, without whinging. Always think before writing something whether it will interest your flist, or have them yawning. Supply the flist with what they want. Be their procurer make your entries their rentboys.

It can help if you post (quite neutrally, so as not to piss off anyone) about some kind of controversy. That invites their opinion. Or post about something that has happened that has annoyed you (or, more importantly, you think will annoy them), tut-tut a bit, and let the sarcastic comments roll in. Recs, and other (flattering) things that mention LJ people's usernames are good too.

Henry IV's advice to his son is more geared towards gaining and keeping the throne of England (I certainly won't discourage you from that route to fame, some people like LJ, others like regicide, I wouldn't wish to prejudice you either way), but is apt for your situation: "By being seldom seen, I could not stir/ But like a comet I was wonder'd at". So, on no account surfeit your online friends with sweetness. Know when to shut up. Only post every few days, and comment only if you have something interesting to say, if you're leaving a review for someone, which no writer will object to, or etiquette (e.g. "My iguana has died!" "That's very very sad.") obliges you to come up with sympathy or congratulations.

LiveJournal is a performance. Perform.

Of course, I just use mine to whinge about the weather. ;)

7. Ahahahaha! A Harmonian! (Not quite though - if you were the true blue variety, you'd still be insisting the H/Hr was canon really and JKR was just on hallucinogenic drugs when she wrote Book 7.)

39. Yes. For shame. :P

HIIII, BRET'S SWEATER.

Assuming this secret is indeed about FOTC, at least in part--obviously I can't speak for my own stuff, but as teeny as the fandom is, everything else I've seen has been very well-written. Each to their own, I guess. *shrug*

4. Have you tried posting a just-for-fun non-fandom meme? That might get some conversation going among people. I'm not always super talkative with people on my flist, especially new people, but something fun and open like a meme might get people warmed up and more friendly. Don't give up!

And if that doesn't work, you might find new people to friend...

33. Samus is pretty awesome. I wouldn't condemn you.

34. Alas, the curse of the small fandom.

41. The similarities are striking. I'll have to go looking for this one.

42. I feel your pain... well, don't feel like you have to keep it alive for everyone else. Consider launching a contest or something that might get people off their creative backsides? Honestly, I don't know the answer to that problem either, but it's worth a shot...

4 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I have started to do this and it does seem to generate some conversation- but there are still a handful avoiding those, too. And I really can't see a reason why they would because the memes are fandom and non-fandom friendly, ask nothing personal, and are short and simple. I just wish people wouldn't friend me back if they didn't plan on even trying. But...I won't give up. :) I will keep trying, it isn't right for me to give up when I spend so much time telling others not to.
I appreciate your encouragement. Thank you so much. :)
