I tend to ship popular pairings, but there have definitely been cases where I was into the ship with no fans or not decent writing. In those cases I'm not usually super involved with the fandom itself because a lot of my interest in fandom is wrapped up in shipping.

Not that I don't like good meta, or gen fic, or art, but sometimes those things are hard to find without the pairings you aren't into.

So sorry OP, but I feel sympathize with your plight.

Hey, if you are one of those people who reads rarepair fic and never leaves a review, then you deserve fucking NOTHING.

But, yes, it can be frustrating as hell to like a pairing and have there be little to no fanworks for it.

Suggestions:
You could write your own fic, hoping to encourage others to do the same.
You could do kinkmeme focused on specific pairings.
You could do prompts on fandom kinkmemes and the like. Also, some writers take requests, suggestions, and prompts.
You could find a pairing that's already popular that you could get behind in a new to you fandom.

I just discovered the Avengers kink meme (like, three days ago), and there's some Steve/Clint there. Sadly, most of the fics I've read so far turns Clint into a skittish woobie. So far it seems like people have an easier time keeping him in character in Tony/Clint fic. (But I like Tony/Clint as well. Just wish I could find more IC Steve/Clint. Clint hiding in vents like a frightened bird is funny and all, but not ouside of crack fic.)

I get how you feel. In one fandom I ship a rare pair that has very few fics. They're all relatively in character, but all kind of short plotless one-shots. In another fandom I ship a pretty popular pairing, but somehow all the fic for it is terrible. Varying degrees of terrible, but still, compared to most other fics in other fandoms there's a noticeable lack of quality.

There's very little you can do about it except what other people have already suggested. Write some yourself, make sure to encourage people who do write the stuff you like, etc.

I was in the smallest ship for my last fandom and it was frustrating how little content there was and it was usually OOC.

Hopefully you find your big and active ship someday.

I have a rare pairing that probably has all of two fans. Our solution was RP.

As a Power Rangers fan I'm surprised to see those two pairs are uncommon, unless it's more a quality thing in those cases. (I can try and do graphics if you'd like, I know it's not fic but my writing muses have seemingly all but left me.)

I feel you. The most prolific writer for my favourite ship currently writes nothing but stomach turning, horribly bleak h/c fic with the c making up about half a page following a twenty chapters of horror, and the second most prolific author can't even spell canon characters' names correctly, and that's the least of their problems when it comes to their writing. :/

I try to post fic myself from time to time but it just seems so futile.

Trust me, you're not the only Andros/Zhane and Hunter/Cam shipper. I still ship both those pairings, and I recall Hunter/Cam used to be fairly popular, and there's still plenty of fic out there. Sadly, there's less Andros/Zhane fic out there, possibly because Power Rangers fandom was a lot smaller during In Space- it may be one of the seasons everyone says they love, but there's not a lot of fic. Possibly due to the fact that online Power Rangers fandom was smaller when PRiS was airing, and a lot of what was around during that time might have gotten lost over the years.
