Well, that's how plant species mate ...essentially. Also, a large proportion of marine species. Release sperm/zygotes into the environment and hope a meets b (or some combination thereof).

That's what I took OP's secret to mean.

I'd like to see it applied to sentient, motile beings who just... I dunno, curl up together in a big pool of water and let the magic happen. It sounds ridiculously cute to me.

Tangentially related - I always wish the... nuances of human/alien sex were written more creatively? Like, just how not all sex is perfect and flawless 100% of the time (and that is a good, normal thing), but when you're interacting with an entirely forgein species, imagine how wonderfully that could be done! All the negotiation and the well intentioned, sweet awkwardness.

But tbh maybe I'm just bitter about the lack of deal that's made of the amino/dextro incompatibility in Shep/Garrus smut.

I found something once on g.e-hentai where Femshep and Garrus screwed up initially--Garrus bit down too hard on her nipple, and Shep jammed her fingers right into his sheath. (I'm not on a private computer, so I can't hunt it down right now.)

There's an awesome Jack Harkness/Horta (from Star Trek) fic out there that manages to be completely sexy and fascinating. Conceptually, it deals with an utterly alien species (a rock monster that secretes acid to tunnel through stone) and yet Jack finds a unique way to be intimate with it that's pleasurable for both him and the alien. I can't find it offhand, but I think it's on AO3.

Mostly I just see it written as some kind of allergic reaction, so "we gotta use a condom derp" or take some injection or whatever.

I read one Shep/Garrus one where turians don't thrust and he just wanted to sit there. That's about all the variety I've seen (aside from all the fic that usually treats his dick like a ridged expanding super dildo)

Then again, I just had a flashback to a Sterling short story (title of which mercifully escapes me) where a random NPC becomes a sex fiend to a giant blob monster. It was hilarious, but definitely a case of "be careful what you wish for." Though I suppose that's not alien-on-alien sex. Hmmm. And canonically, while we don't know anything about troll genitalia or the actual specifics of their mating, we know that the end result involves a pool of mixed genetic fluid in a bucket, which is then taken to a giant mother grub, who takes it in, blends it with the fluids from every other troll mating in the area, mixes up the genetics, and births a copious number of grubs, most of whom never survive the trials in the birthing caverns.

Even without taking troll romance into account, troll reproduction is a strange and curious thing.

The sequel to Leslie Fish's Shelter (often cited as either/both the original K/S fic (although technically it was S/K) or the original "slash" fanfic), was a fic called Poses, and in that one, if I remember correctly, Spock had crotch tentacles.
