(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)The real dilemma is that we live in a more and more diverse society now (heard on NPR that about 40% of millenials are minorities, a larger percentage than any other generation before us), and the media is a way to reflect the way we live, because even though we like to say that Hollywood is not realistic (and it really isn't) we do want to find validity in the films/tv shows we watch on some levels. By choosing Miles to be MCU's new Spider-Man it would have included more young people to feel like they are included in the world than just always having to put up with the fact that we can imagine ourselves as Peter Parker, except we, the minorities who are superhero fans, still have to see a Caucasian man play the superhero.
I mean, I wouldn't say that I hate or dislike Tom Holland being the new Spider-Man or that we have another Peter Parker in the cinematic universe in less than 15 years, but I was very eager to see Miles Morales in the cinematic universe so it all became a little disappointing. That's how it is for me, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)A good superhero character often (not always) works on the level of audience identification.
We identify with Kitty Pryde, or Jubilee, or Jaime from Blue Beetle, because we are or have been young people, even if we're not Jewish from Chicago, Chinese-looking American, or El Paso chicano. Some guys with glasses identify with Clark Kent for that reason. Short guys identify with Puck or Wolverine or something. Ancient Mediterranean history buffs identify with Carter Hall, and so forth. The character doesn't have to be super-complex, just someone we can sympathise with.
Peter Parker is a New Yorker. He's not from the idealised rural Midwest like Clark Kent, nor outer space, nor Paradise Island, nor "darkest Africa." That makes him identification material to a lot of people, especially those who live in NYC. You don't have to be white or from NYC to identify with him, of course. He has his family issues, his soap opera elements, his self-confidence problems.
But Peter Parker is from NYC of the 1960's. If Peter is relatively "boring," it's because there are so many white dudes, and even "white dudes from NYC of generations past" in superhero movies already. Miles gives a share of the audience something different. And that's "less boring" to them, even if Miles in the comics isn't as wildly popular as Petey was at his height of popularity.
I think a good script can make Miles not be boring. And a white dude named Peter Parker isn't automatically more interesting, and might just seem repetitive. So the anti-white-Peter crowd have a point.
Really, though, it's a shame we're not seeing a Luke Cage project developed. Yeah, they say they're going to do Black Panther, but I think Cage is a better character. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)Black Panther's coming out.
And Sam Wilson, Rhodey, Nick Fury already have pretty prominent roles.
Can't we get some other race?
A Latino man? A Pacific Islander? An East Asian? A Middle-Easterner? An Indian? A Native American?
Please....

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)Like seriously just let him die and stop beating his dead decomposing corpse. Give some new characters a chance. More poc and female characters would be a step in the right direction.

Hence why I would have liked Miles(or even Gwen) to get a chance, it would have been something different and new.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-26 01:00 am (UTC)(link)A new character--ANY new character, even another white guy--would necessarily have a new origin story. Even if he was boring as shit, the presentation would make him interesting. That is why I'm personally yawning over yet another Peter Parker movie.
I've seen Peter Parker in five different movies now. Give me something fresh and different. Black Peter Parker would just be black Peter Parker, same tired, familiar storyline. I don't want to see more of Peter. I want to see someone new.
Wanting Cocoa Pebbles because I've been eating Corn Flakes for 15 years now does not mean Corn Flakes are bad. It means I'm tired of them.
