Labyrinth

I have no idea why but I'm in a nostalgic mood. What's your favorite part and/or character of this movie?

Even though it's creepy, I did like the Sarah/Jareth "romance", especially the ballroom scene.

If they did make a sequel, what would they need to do to make it good? Or what would you like to see?

Favorite Character:

No, but for real. Favorite character is probably Ludo. He's pretty awesome.

I never got into the romance aspect (because I found it creepy).

I've not read the books but I'd like a sequel that has Toby in it somehow.

Yeah, it's creepy. I personally have a kink for age-difference. I think because he's an otherworldly being and it's kind of her story that it's easy to overlook the creepiness for me. I do get a little skeeved out thinking of the actors playing the parts though.

I'm really torn about what kind of sequel I want. OTOH I liked the romance so it would be great to see grown-up Sarah who is now on equal footing with Jareth, and see what happens to their relationship from there. And, with the new technology, I think you could really push the look of the labyrinth into something nightmarish or really cool. Make a mature, dark version.

But OTOH that's a recipe to lose the charm of the original. If you were trying to capture that (and I'm not sure anyone could succeed with Jim H not being around anymore), then it should be Toby or some other kid ending up in the labyrinth (maybe for a different reason from the first time) and going up against Jareth. Similar but different. I'm not sure which way to go.

We actually didn't see this movie till we were an adult, so totally missed the nostalgia train and never quite got it. I do LOVE the absolutely stunning work the Henson studio did for it though!

I actually wrote a Sarah/Jareth fic on request once, where she was an evil domme mastermind, and that was actually pretty fun. I'm not into the romance or pairing myself, but I kinda see Labyrinth as like, the story Sarah is telling herself in her head, kinda her own fantasy/Mary Sue story. So all the labyrinth stuff is her wish fulfillment power fantasy, and Jareth reflects that.

The movie makes a LOT more sense and is more enjoyable in that light, for me.

That was kind of my take on it too. Especially as early on she's immersed in her own fantasy-world. At that age it's not uncommon to have a crush on an older guy, and I always saw it as an exploration of that idea.

I like Sarah/Jareth fic, and I'm happy that most of it has Sarah aged up appropriately.

Yeah. I saw it more as Sarah's fantasy than anything real. And also, unlike, say, Bella Swan, SHE TELLS JARETH NO. Part of her fantasy is beating him and leaving him heartbroken and pining after her! That's actually pretty great, now that I think of it!

As a kid, my favourite character was Ambrosius. Seriously. I had so much love for that cowardly (and/or eminently sensible) and longsuffering dog. As an adult, it's probably Jareth, but I've developed a real thing for the Fae since my teen years.

My favourite part of the movie always was and still is the Escher Room. That thing is amazing. Though I'll also give points to the Helping Hands for being really cool and snide.

I still do ship Jareth/Sarah a bit, in a Tam Lin sort of way. The ballroom scene was awesome, and I think I developed something of a fondness for masquerades from it.

I don't know about a sequel at all. I'm very very attached to the Jim-Henson-ness of the original, and there's pretty much no way to emulate that in modern films. CGI does not cut it. I don't know. If WETA workshop was doing it or something, then maybe? Animatronics and miniatures and strong make-up skills, that's what I want.

Plot-wise, though ... I'm not sure. I've read a bunch of fanfic where Sarah has to return to the Labyrinth to save it from some outside threat, looking at a twisted Labyrinth through now-adult eyes. I'd like something like that, I think. Where Sarah's new adultness is echoed by an infection in the childish charm/danger of the Labyrinth that turns it into something darker, but the lightness is returned at the end, the way Hoggle and the others showed up at the end of the original to show that even with adult responsibilities, childishness and wonder and magic do still have their place.

I've read similar stories where people stop believing in the Labyrinth so it begins to fall apart, Jareth loses his power, and Sarah has to come return belief and save it.

I almost want them to go in a totally different direction because I don't think anyone could really capture the charm from the Jim H. company. Even Weta went way too CGI in the new Hobbit films. If they went back to practical effects, I think there's a chance but I no longer count on it. But if they went WAY different then I don't think it would feel like they were stepping on the original as much. I think I might like a darker, more mature take on it, but with the happy ending at the end.

I like your idea of the infection. It would be a good way of bringing Sarah back.

Have you read A Forfeit of Dreams?

I love Sir Didymus and Ambrosius and how their pair work together, mostly just the amusement that the fox-knight wants to fight and his steed wants to get the fuck out. Always amused me.

I'm quite fond of the Escher scene and the Ballroom scene, both are visually appealing to me.

I still actually ship Sarah/Jareth a fair bit, idk I've just got a bit of a thing for human/non-human pairs(and age-gaps), though I go for fic with her aged up(and I quite like stories with her needing to go back to help Jareth or Hoggle/Didymus/Ludo for whatever reason).

I don't know how canon it is but there is a manga that's supposed to be a sequel of the Labyrinth and it's, alright. It starts out okay but the issue that it has is that it tires to appeal to both the J/S shippers and the people that don't ship it at the end when honestly I think they should have just stuck with one or the other(and probably the non-shipping side, much as I do like J/S).

I've been torn about the manga. I love the world and would like to see more of it but pretty much everything I've heard about the manga is bad. Most people hope that whatever they did for a sequel, they don't go the route of the manga. I'm still curious though.

The actual world-building side of the manga is cool and I liked seeing more of how the Labyrinth world worked, but the main character is a bit dull(it's not Sarah but her younger brother) and the plot just gets really, really weird as it goes on. The cover art is gorgeous though.

Yay for Didymus and Ambrosius! They were my favourites as a kid (I think I was mostly on Ambrosius' side, though), and they're still awesome.

Yes! I just think they're hilarious and certainly in Ambrosius's case, cute as a button(poor doggy just wants to hide xD).

I watched that for the first time ever recently, and I loved the creepy, fucked up Jareth/Sarah vibes. It also put me on a David Bowie kick. My mother currently hates me because of it.

I think I'd rather see it reimagined than given a sequel though. Not a remake exactly, those never go over well with people, more a general "how would the movie change if X was different?" type thing.

Re: Labyrinth

(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
For a reimaging, would you recast Jareth? If so, who would you get to play him?

And what thing do you think would be interesting to change in this scenario?

Oh god no. Keep Bowie, put him back in spandex breeches. Maybe cast someone as Sarah who isn't actually a sixteen year old girl, get rid of that part of the creep factor, but keep the rest of it.

I have no idea what would be a good difference honestly. I'm not good at that part, just the part where I sat and wondered how anyone survived the 80s with that much hairspray involved.

My favorite is the old lady who collects junk. I love the way she talks.

ngl, it may have been creepy but when I was a pre-teen/teen, I was aaaallll over Jareth/Sarah and shipped it like burning. It's a good fandom, actually. Older, but some quality fanfic and no BNF drama.

Slightly OT: Labyrinth and JS&MN

Slightly off topic, but -- the JS & MN wiki has a picture of the ballroom scene from Labyrinth at the bottom of the entry for the Gentleman with Thistledown Hair that somewhat suggests that he was based on Jareth (and certainly the Gentleman does love to dance. :p)

Anyone know if this is true?

IDK if so, but I suspect JKR was a big fan of Labyrinth because the early HP books have quite a few shout-outs to it. Like the way Sarah gets through one of her obstacles by solving a logic puzzle, and passes another one by walking through the wall, a la Platform 9 and 3/4. I thought that Sir Cadogan owed a lot to Sir Didymus. And at one point Jareth even calls Hoggle "Hogwart."

You may have something about the wall-phasing (I'm sure someone somewhere's written a thesis on liminality and liminal spaces), though the puzzle/riddle-solving thing as part of the hero's journey goes back at least a few thousand years.
