Travel Questions

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-07-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister and I are 90% sure we will be going on our trip in March next year. We want to spend like 4 days in NYC and 5 days in DC. What would be the cheapest/easiest way to get from NYC to DC.

So far, the fastest is flying.
Cheapest is renting a car (as far as we can figure).

We just can't figure out which would be better.

Also, I would love any advice from anyone with experience in either city in regards to places to visit/eat/stay. Though for DC we think we know what hotel we will be staying at.

The MegaBus from NYC to DC is good! It drops you off at Union Station, so you're by the Metro.

For stuff to do in DC, I love the American Indian Museum, and don't listen to anyone who says it's lame. It's got a great exhibits and an excellent cafeteria (fry bread. FRY BREAD!)

Huh! Never heard of that. How clean and safe is it? Can you bring luggage?

NAYRT but I've also taken the Megabus (albeit on different routes) and in my experience it's very clean and safe, and also fairly convenient and cheap. I think it helps that you can only order tickets online.

You can bring luggage, but IIRC it's limited to one bag in the luggage compartment and one small carry-on.

That isn't bad. The same as you would on a plane. :D

AYRT: I can't remember the luggage limits (I've only ever taken it for weekend trips when I only had a duffle), but my experiences have all been good and I always felt safe.

Thank you! I'm showing it to my sister now.

Flying vs. driving is always a matter of figuring out whether your time is worth the extra couple of hundred dollars for a plane ticket, and that equation is going to depend heavily on how far you would have to drive to even get to NY/DC in the first place. If you're from farther west than Chicago, it is going to take at least one full day of driving to get there, and you need to factor that into how much time you'll have doing actual fun stuff.

Have you considered Megabus? Looking at their service map you can get to NYC from pretty much any state east of the Mississippi within one transfer and it'll be less than $100 although their webtool is pretty useless. Chinatown Bus is also pretty reasonable although the buses are less nice IIRC, and they also have a surprisingly wide network. Considering gas prices and the fact that you wouldn't have to stop for sleeping, you might be able to break even with driving.

We'll be flying to NYC so we would have to rent a car (which runs about half what two tickets would cost). But it takes longer.

What reason do you have for renting a car in NY? from what I vaguely remember from going to NYC you'd be better off with the subway, buses, or taxis because traffic is AWFUL. Even a rent-a-bike might get you wherever faster. Of course, if you want to go see something outside of the city it's a different story.

It might be a better idea to fly to NY, take the Megabus or Chinatown Bus to DC, and rent a car there if you need a car. Then you can either fly out of Dulles or take the bus back to NYC for your flight.

Oh no, we'd only rent a car for like 5 hours to drive from NYC to DC.

Unless the car rental is less than $30, you will save money going with the Chinatown Bus. I have actually personally rode the southern half of this route (PHL to DC) and it was perfectly fine--bus was clean, it left on time, and it even had free wifi. Lets you out right outside a metro station in Chinatown. Tons of departure times too, check it out.

Megabus seems to be running the same price, maybe a little more expensive.

I'll give Chinatown Bus a look as well! It does seem quite cheap.

Will you be driving the car back to NYC? If not, you should look into whether a one-way fee applies. I hear that can get expensive.

One-way plane tickets can be expensive, too, but I imagine it might be cheaper betwee NYC and DC than between, say, Chicago and Los Angeles. If you plan to fly home from DC, then it might all work out, but thus may be the kind of thing you should talk to an actual travel agent about.

Have you looked into trains? Way slower than flying, but possibly comparable to driving and you can nap or read.

I will not. I'll be flying from DC back home to OK. :)

We've looked at trains but they are quite expensive! Which sucks because I've never ridden one.

You ought to look into what the OK-NY-DC-OK round trip by plane would cost all together, then, rather than treating each leg separately. Maybe it won't make a difference, but you should check.

I would use Bolt or Megabus. I have heard good things about both. Even if you could get a reasonably priced ticket you would have to take into account the costs to get the airport. Depending on the airport that add up.

Also went renting a car, the tolls can and do add up quickly.

We are also thinking of maybe a train. Never ridden one. It will be a bit more expensive, but a fun experience I hope.

The train is good as well. That is what I have used when I go up to NYC. Keep in mind that if you buy the tickets well ahead and travel on off peak days it can be far cheaper...

Yeah, coach tickets are only about $52 right now. It says we can bring 2 bags of carry on luggage (50 lbs). Are there overhead bins or storage?

The big bags you would store at the in a nook of sorts at the end of the car.
