If you like Monet and Van Gogh, there's tons else out there. Art teacher forbade anime a lot because it's so easy to copy...which is, arguably THEIR issue, but having fought my way through thA system, you CAN work it, if you're not stubborn and just like "OMG ALL I WANNa DRAW IS MOE GIRLS POSING CUTELY!"

About half my projects were fandom oriented. And looked awesome, and I got a's and mad props from all of them, by working within the boundaries of the assignment (For example, I did a project in which we were suppose to scan objects to draw them using texture by scanning a manga page and object related to that character. Isabella from Paradise Kiss surrounded by pearls, and bits of lace, etc)

And ANYTHING you learn in art class will help you make your anime art better. Or almost anything. GOOD anime art will utilize perspective, shading, all the things you'll learn in art class. So even if you don't draw anime IN class, it'll help you out of it.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree for the most part, except I kind of laughed because I am stubborn, and the things I've been assigned to do in art classes (and seen others do) are subjects and/or techniques (like cross-shading or realism) that I'm not interested in.

Hence why I don't take them anymore. The whole point of art to me is to enjoy it, so I'd rather be stubborn and be a terrible artist without an teaching and enjoy what I'm doing rather than be stressed and adhere to restrictions and work on something I'm not enjoying.

Okay, welcome to real life, where we often do things that are not fun or exciting because they improve our craft overall.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHA AREN'T YOU WITTY.

The whole point is I don't care enough about becoming better to spend hours doing something I hate. Like I said, I'd rather be bad and continue to enjoy it. Call me crazy!

[identity profile] drworm.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'd call you young and ignorant.

A good class and a good teacher are both supposed to push you out of your comfort zone and challenge you to do things that widen your sphere of experience. And sometimes you'll end up doing things that are boring or frustrating.

Not improving is your choice, of course. But it's not one I particularly understand.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Since when did just enjoying my hobby make me ignorant? God forbid I have opinions and such. Because I'm young, I'm getting the feeling you're assuming that I would hate to do anything that required actual effort.

I'm not understanding why my personal choice to remain uneducated seems to be insulting you and the art world so badly.

[identity profile] drworm.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Your opinions are based upon a lack of education. Ergo, ignorant.

Insulted? Hardly. Just a bit sad.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
... my opinion that I find one style of art more appealing than another is based on a lack of education. I would understand if this opinion was about politics or government. But a style of art I like better? No. That's a dumb argument. Because the wealth of knowledge I may or may not know does not affect how I feel about a style of art. Unless there is some magical style I've never heard about that I would absolutely LOVE on discovery of it, your statement does not make sense.

I honestly don't know how to explain myself anymore, because all I'm going to receive is the "you're young and don't know anything" argument.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-31 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
... in case you haven't figured it out yet, your attitude is what's getting you wanked at here. The fact that you're so close-minded that you prefer anime - without necessarily having even attempted anything else - is shallow and ignorant. It would've been a lot different if you'd said something like, "Well, AFTER trying out this and this and this style of art, I prefer anime because ... blablahblah whatever." Because then, you'd have at least tried out different styles. Your opinion isn't informed at all, and you don't seem to care. (And yes, such a thing as an 'informed opinion' exists).

You then make a big deal about how it's ONLY a hobby, you don't want to bother taking an art class, ect. It doesn't matter if it's a hobby. No one will take you seriously if you agree with such an obviously ignorant, troll secret and THEN say that the anime-centered style is the only thing you've really tried.

Because the wealth of knowledge I may or may not know does not affect how I feel about a style of art.

Really? How do you know that? How can you know whether or not you'll like something until you try it? What if you learned something about a particular style of art that made you feel more passionate about it?

Which is basically why I've never taken an art class - they basically forbid anything anime-influenced. But in the eyes of the art world, this apparently makes me a terrible, terrible person. 8(

Translation: I only like the anime style, and because art classes would expect me to LEAVE MY COMFORT ZONE, I won't bother seeing what else is out there. Even though I may actually like it. As a hobby or not.

TL;DR: ignorant weeaboo. :(

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
See, I always did things like...if I was assigned to do a still life, I'd do a still life of one of my action figures. Or I'd gather objects that *I* knew we're anime oriented, even if the teacher didn't. I.e. what would Naruto have in his pocket?

But honestly, all those techniques WILL help you, evntually. The sheet draped over the chairs will help you with anime heroine X's long flowing dress, or the still life will help you with the backgrounds, and so on and so forth. It may not be the most fun, but in the end it'll help. (I'm studying to be an art teacher, and have myself all preped for the anime/comic kids, can ya tell?)

I ran in SO many circles with my art teacher over this shit, including yelling matches in class. But sure enough, I got my AP portfolio back with a note that said "5-refreshing to see none anime style" And I...understand that they're kinda lost, and have seened things get into juried shows that *I* knew were copied (Which is what they're all so worried about. That were just copying someone they don't know), but on the flip side...THEY should learn, not edit us.

Except Cubism. Cubism should die a quick death. D:
/hypocrit

That was really tl;dr XD I am passionate about this, if ya couldn't tell.

Except Cubism. Cubism should die a quick death. D:

HFLDAKH! *headdesks* Cubism...just--yeah. (I've looked at it, had the option to use it for an assignment as one of two choices, tried, didn't like it etc.)

I had one girl in a class I took in High School get up in arms over the fact taht the teacher said "Do not draw in that ah-na-may style.". I kind of went "Eh, whatever"; after a few years I have various styles and can mix them a bit I think I managed to work my style into something non-anime which is good, since a few years back that was a goal of mine. did I make sense? it,s late where I am (I honestly can't draw proper 'BIG CiRCLE' anime eyes anymore, just "normal"-type circles now...which can be considered a good thing)

Seriously, observing camera perspectives on TV has helped so much with drawing perspectives as has pencil color shading with watercolors and digital colours (drawing from a real picture--knowing to apply other colours to achieve a certain shade or highlight etc.) and drawing from a real image with realistic eyes or noses etc. Granted my teacher lost my graded work, I learned alot from the course despite the end mark. grumble. :)

oops, speech D:

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see any value in cubism. Not artistically, not...anything. It didn't teach me anything. I tried REALLY hard, but pretty much as far as I can tell cubism is "If you can't draw something, work to draw something REALLY BADLY and label it cubism."

But yeah, pretty much, you just apply what you can how you can. Anything you learn...almost, can help you eventually.

[identity profile] shinraisei.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
(also, sorry for the real lack of grammar there in my comment; it's the end of the week and I'm tired. Yikes)

I don't have a problem with looking at cubism either, but as something I could apply to my work....I don't see any potential application or use. (at present. Who knows about the future)

Anything you learn...almost, can help you eventually.

Save cubism (though this one is in the "eventually" box)

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm adding you, you seem cool! :D and my grammar is made of fail, so we'll match at the ends of the week.

I don't even like cubism visually. It's just...yukcy all around.

[identity profile] shinraisei.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sure! I've added you back :D (grammar seems to just die towards the end of most people's weeks)

Cubism's alright, not something I hate but certainly something I'd look at and be all like: "Wha? Whereztherestofthem?"

[identity profile] shinraisei.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but see that's the first step to overcome after that silly retarded and dumb "Intro to ____" class, everything gets better and creativity is less restricted. The intro courses I found at my high school were mostly meant to teach you how to work with shading, realism and various mediums and NOT to work on personal creations or styles--just 'here, some color theory 101' and apply it to your current style. (hence the restrictions)

Trust me, granted you are in high school (judging from your profile), when you get to University or College, no matter what field you are pursuing you will have to take these "Intro to ____" classes. That silly crosshatching and realism and perspectives stuff will come back again to nag at you and that course(s) will be mandatory for first year in almost any visual arts program almost anywhere. They will perhaps be boring, hair pulling and make you want to cry, but after that silly Intro course, once you get into the nitty-gritty stuff of whatever subject you're following in 2nd yr onwards, it gets much better and less restricted and professors will be wanting to see what you can do with the foundations they've given you in first year.

Besides, Intro classes like that in art in High School only focus on giving you the basics so you can get a start, usually. Most Art College-type Intro courses work on teaching you skills you can use to refine your style and work it into something much better.

Cubism will probably want to make you feel like smacking something though from what I hear

Plus, the helpful critiques you could get, could help your artwork become better. (Perspectives helped me

PS. the reason why, I think most teachers dislike the anime-style these days is because they run into so many bad and horrible copy-cases of it. And when you run into that many (I speak from experience--no original style from anyone that I saw applying the anime/mange style), it makes you want to throw something against the wall; for those with more self-control, perhaps sigh deeply and sip a hot cup of something.

anyway, my 50 cents.
