14. Going the other way here and sort-of agreeing. I love anime-styled art. I'm not big on any Western or European paintings. I don't like Picasso or Dali or any "big artists" outside of Monet and Van Gogh. I've been asked to be tutored in art, and I'm always, always told to never draw anime art because it warps your style, and you can never get out of it.

Which is basically why I've never taken an art class - they basically forbid anything anime-influenced. But in the eyes of the art world, this apparently makes me a terrible, terrible person. 8(

So tl;dr - I basically agree.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-30 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay wait, so you "basically agree" that:
-all western paintings are ugly, despite the fact that there are so many different styles and countries grouped into the "west" that it would be impossible to make a blanket statement about all of them
-"western" paintings all feature women who look old and fat, whereas anime has the "ideal" method of portraying beauty
...
...
...?

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically agree in that I love anime-styled art. I'm not big on any Western or European paintings. I'm not agreeing with the fact that OP believes that the woman in the painting is "old and fat", or that Western art isn't art.

I guess saying "I don't like Western paintings" is blanketing all of the styles, but for the most part, I don't.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So why would you say you "basically agree" with a secret when you... don't actually agree with the secret?

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you miss the fact that the entire secret is about how the OP prefers anime-styled art to Western art?

While art classes snubbing anime is retarded, that's not a valid excuse to piss on Western art.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I never agreed with pissing on Western art - I specifically said I just don't like it. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I don't realize it's art.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay. For a minute I thought when you said you agreed you were also justifying the bashing. Jumped the gun there!

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
If you like Monet and Van Gogh, there's tons else out there. Art teacher forbade anime a lot because it's so easy to copy...which is, arguably THEIR issue, but having fought my way through thA system, you CAN work it, if you're not stubborn and just like "OMG ALL I WANNa DRAW IS MOE GIRLS POSING CUTELY!"

About half my projects were fandom oriented. And looked awesome, and I got a's and mad props from all of them, by working within the boundaries of the assignment (For example, I did a project in which we were suppose to scan objects to draw them using texture by scanning a manga page and object related to that character. Isabella from Paradise Kiss surrounded by pearls, and bits of lace, etc)

And ANYTHING you learn in art class will help you make your anime art better. Or almost anything. GOOD anime art will utilize perspective, shading, all the things you'll learn in art class. So even if you don't draw anime IN class, it'll help you out of it.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree for the most part, except I kind of laughed because I am stubborn, and the things I've been assigned to do in art classes (and seen others do) are subjects and/or techniques (like cross-shading or realism) that I'm not interested in.

Hence why I don't take them anymore. The whole point of art to me is to enjoy it, so I'd rather be stubborn and be a terrible artist without an teaching and enjoy what I'm doing rather than be stressed and adhere to restrictions and work on something I'm not enjoying.

Okay, welcome to real life, where we often do things that are not fun or exciting because they improve our craft overall.

See, I always did things like...if I was assigned to do a still life, I'd do a still life of one of my action figures. Or I'd gather objects that *I* knew we're anime oriented, even if the teacher didn't. I.e. what would Naruto have in his pocket?

But honestly, all those techniques WILL help you, evntually. The sheet draped over the chairs will help you with anime heroine X's long flowing dress, or the still life will help you with the backgrounds, and so on and so forth. It may not be the most fun, but in the end it'll help. (I'm studying to be an art teacher, and have myself all preped for the anime/comic kids, can ya tell?)

I ran in SO many circles with my art teacher over this shit, including yelling matches in class. But sure enough, I got my AP portfolio back with a note that said "5-refreshing to see none anime style" And I...understand that they're kinda lost, and have seened things get into juried shows that *I* knew were copied (Which is what they're all so worried about. That were just copying someone they don't know), but on the flip side...THEY should learn, not edit us.

Except Cubism. Cubism should die a quick death. D:
/hypocrit

That was really tl;dr XD I am passionate about this, if ya couldn't tell.

Ah, but see that's the first step to overcome after that silly retarded and dumb "Intro to ____" class, everything gets better and creativity is less restricted. The intro courses I found at my high school were mostly meant to teach you how to work with shading, realism and various mediums and NOT to work on personal creations or styles--just 'here, some color theory 101' and apply it to your current style. (hence the restrictions)

Trust me, granted you are in high school (judging from your profile), when you get to University or College, no matter what field you are pursuing you will have to take these "Intro to ____" classes. That silly crosshatching and realism and perspectives stuff will come back again to nag at you and that course(s) will be mandatory for first year in almost any visual arts program almost anywhere. They will perhaps be boring, hair pulling and make you want to cry, but after that silly Intro course, once you get into the nitty-gritty stuff of whatever subject you're following in 2nd yr onwards, it gets much better and less restricted and professors will be wanting to see what you can do with the foundations they've given you in first year.

Besides, Intro classes like that in art in High School only focus on giving you the basics so you can get a start, usually. Most Art College-type Intro courses work on teaching you skills you can use to refine your style and work it into something much better.

Cubism will probably want to make you feel like smacking something though from what I hear

Plus, the helpful critiques you could get, could help your artwork become better. (Perspectives helped me

PS. the reason why, I think most teachers dislike the anime-style these days is because they run into so many bad and horrible copy-cases of it. And when you run into that many (I speak from experience--no original style from anyone that I saw applying the anime/mange style), it makes you want to throw something against the wall; for those with more self-control, perhaps sigh deeply and sip a hot cup of something.

anyway, my 50 cents.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-30 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
no, in the art world, it means you're never gonna get taken seriously. people will assume you're a weeaboo and won't look at you the same. truth hurts.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but I knew this already and it doesn't hurt me. I don't know what to tell you. I'm not trying to jump into the art world and become the next world-reowned artist. It's just my opinion that anime-styled art is more appealing than Western art.

No, no, no, wrong, wrong, wrong.

[identity profile] ame-lj.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Which is basically why I've never taken an art class - they basically forbid anything anime-influenced." - If you ever /took/ an art class in the first place, you would actually realize the reason why the teacher probably won't let you draw "anime" is because they are trying to teach you how to draw outside of the influence you have and /grow/ as an artist. I'm pretty sure all my art teachers who made me draw still life drawings, (which, if you don't know, is drawings of objects, example, ruit in a bowl) were teaching me value, shape, form, contrast, ect. You don't LEARN by just drawing the same thing over and over again. Also, this is coming from a girl, who took three years of art courses in high school, and never had one teacher complain when I drew cartoons. :x

Oops, TL;DR. Points is. Teachers are here to teach you how to do the art well; not to watch you draw little anime doodles. :D

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...thank you for telling me what I already know. Really. No where in my post did I baw about not understanding why in the WORLD an art teacher would forbid me from drawing things in that style.

I know what the whole point of taking art classes is. And I don't care enough to. It's not a hard concept to understand.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
oh for goodness sake

I went to the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. There were a lot of anime-lovers who had their style and were exactly like you, all "I AM STICKING TO ANIME ETC ETC"
That school doesn't want you to be like every western artist, and instead, it works with your style. You can faun over anime art all that you want but if you can't get the perspective correct, or the form correct, or your lighting correct, or anything BASIC correct, you're not going to make it. And a lot of people didn't.

If you're going to be biased, and still want to be good and stick with art as a profession, the least you can humanly do is take an anatomy class.

Okay, but you didn't talk about knowing that, so how was I suppose to know that? I was just telling you something because not all art teachers forbid you from drawing anime, but they are there to actually teach you.

Sorry I don't know how to read your mind and know what you know?

[identity profile] bondofflame.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
... ROFL I think most of the people who commented above are completely missing the picture of what you're trying to say, which is basically that people who DO draw aren't ALWAYS drawing for the sake of becoming a professional. It's called a hobby.

I'm an either or kind of person, so I do enjoy Western/European art such as Monet and Escher AND I like anime art because it's also just as pleasing to the eye.

True, anime style is easier to copy and I see it more for entertainment purposes, but that doesn't mean that it takes NO effort to make. People have their likes and dislikes, and while I don't agree with the approach 14 made (thus luring in hoards of people to attack anyone who remotely agrees) I can see why some people prefer it over realism.

Personally, if I just want to lounge about I'll work on anime style, and when I'm doing it seriously I'll do realism. Anime CAN warp the style of how you draw things realistically, but if you work hard enough I don't see any harm in learning to master both. HAHA Of course, since you favor anime style more, there's no harm with practicing on what you DO like.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
YEAH WELL YOUR OPINION IS STUPID BECAUSE -

wait we're on the same side. LOL.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT. God. You're supposed to agree completely and utterly with me. You're my friend.

I forgot Escher - I like him too. Whoops. :(

But yeah. I don't even like realism. Or cubism. Or impressionism. Oh god, how dare I soil the art world with my tainted hands. And on the OP point, I agree. The secret was worded terribly, so I guess I worded my agreement terribly, too.

[identity profile] drworm.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)

trufax, i mean, there were only ever three movements in the entire history of art

And god, how can you forget Escher you heartless, talentless animu drawing weeabo demon.

Baw, if there's a style I utterly loathe it's cubism. But hey, some people like it, and I'm not just going to piss in their cornflakes just because it isn't my thing.
