I used to feel like that about Jackson Pollack as well, but I think when you actually see them in person, it sort of changes everything. In a reproduction in a book or a print, all you're seeing is this flat, shiny piece of paper. But the actually paintings are an interesting study in the layering of the colors and the texture of the paint, the different techniques paint was splattered on the canvas, etc. I mean, it's still not my favorite, but I have learned to appreciate something like Pollack (or Mark Rothko- mmmmmmm delicious Rothko) while still preferring the work of, for example, the Italian Renaissance Masters or the Romantics. Working at a museum really broadens my palette, especially since now I can go to almost every other museum for free as well. 8D

Well, maybe you like pictures of red dots on yellow canvases? In all fairness, I doubt you or I would think of putting a red dot on a yellow canvas and trying to sell it for that much. That is: It takes a certain genius to reach such depths of idiocy.

As for paint splatters "without soul or emotion", that's just plain ridiculous. Who are you to decide what is or isn't art, when the entire population of the planet together, from now to past generations, can't decide what is or isn't art in a firm manner?
People move in certain way. One person switches legs using different body language than another, even if that person is the same age or gender. This particular body language, that is, the movement method and form, is what is used to create any artist's so-called "style" (along, of course, with personal methods of judgment regarding aesthetics).
It stands to reason, then, that even the action of splashing paint on a canvas using physical movements innate and natural to yourself will be imbued with your "style", and thus "soul".

The guy threw paint on canvas. Thats all he did. Dripped, threw, splattered. I could shoot a paintball gun at a canvas and get the same effect.

It's not art. It's ... just foolishness. As an artist it offends me that people that know shit about actual DRAWING are making more than amazing artists, simply because for some reason, like the yuppie bullshit you just spewed, people think there's more 'emotion' in it.

As I just mentioned, no, you certainly could NOT shoot a paintball gun at a canvas and achieve the same results. I don't understand how I could possibly explain with such thoroughness how and why this is so and yet receive such a response, but, eh. Do you agree that people move in certain ways? There, then, is your answer as to what makes your average paint-slinger's products so unique. (There's also the Chaos Theory, but that's physics and I think we might want to avoid that.)

Sadly for you, myself, and millions of others, art cannot be easily or strictly determined. As an artist myself, it saddens me that people cannot understand that different minds view different things as appealing. Also let us remember that many of our current so-called "masters" of art were scorned, ridiculed, and otherwise looked down upon in their time. I must also inquire: Do you enjoy the general art styles of anime and manga?

Two things that don't really fit in: I am not in any sense of the word a yuppie. Please refrain from jumping to unwarranted conclusions. Furthermore, in order to enhance the credibility of your arguments, please do not resort to personal slams or put-downs.

I agree with you. Even though I personally don't like modern art, I understand what you mean, and I do agree.

Wo Xi Huan, here is the internet: you win it. I couldn't agree with your above statements more! If I have to hear someone say that a five-year-old could make a Rothko one more time, I'm going to punch someone. The point is, would a five-year-old ever THINK to do something like that? Could one ever produce something like that without copying, or getting the technique right? No way.

Word. I generally don't like modern art at all, but I do sortof like Pollock; either way, if you feel validated saying "Pollock wasn't an artist" there's nothing to stop somebody else saying you're not. Art is a subjective label. If I can see the beauty in stained concrete, then that can be art to me. As soon as you start saying "this is fine art and this isn't" you'll box yourself into a corner trying to explain why.

I would say that accusing Pollack's work of lacking soul or emotion is ignorant, to say the least. You personally may not see the value of his work, but that doesn't mean it is devoid of redeeming value. It just means that, to use the art snob parlance, "you don't get it."

There's nothing to get. It's interior design, if you want to call it that, but it's not art. To say his is great is to spit on artists who actually TRY and work to get where they're at. The man was a hack.

Well, you're not alone in your opinions, that is for sure, so your points may have some validity. I mean, I used to agree with you. I wondered why he was so highly esteemed in the art community. Needless to say, I saw the light. We must agree to disagree.
