Why is murder such a bad thing? Even if I don't murder someone, people are still going to murder.

It is bad because 1) It is illegal 2) Making meth puts his family in danger 3) Making meth is a VERY dangerous process 4) Later on his meth-making is used to fund some very bad people

Meth makes people ugly. At least make a drug that doesn't contribute to the ugliness of the world. Meth ruins a person's face, their prospects and social position, and possibly their children.

It's not so much the meth itself. It is - as the show demonstrates quite well - the fact that it's never JUST about the drugs. Since drugs are criminalized, it will inevitably lead to you being involved in other illegal things - which yes, could lead to murder (or you being murdered) once you get involved in the whole business of dealing professionally.

Well, there's a strong argument to be made that reducing the supply does, in fact, reduce the usage.

Walter White ends up doing a whole lot more than making meth. Him being a villain comes from him being a manipulative asshole who makes everyone's lives worse, as well as puts them all in serious danger, not to mention he quickly loses any scruples about murdering people. How he played Jesse is seriously insane.

Oh and then there's the whole him being involved in making meth caused this personality change, forced him to work with gangs and ultimately was a gateway to him being the king of all evil bastards. Plus, I'm not sure arguing that "he makes a product that is "safer" than average meth" is a great argument, considering at best, it, you know, encourages people to do his meth, puts more meth on the streets, etc.

That's like saying someone who makes purer poison is better than someone who makes diluted poison, in the end it is still poison.

Meth might actually kill you faster if it is higher quality as overdosing can be easier as the addicts take the same dosage as they would if it was diluded? Then again less chance of it being mixed with rat poison so that is something, I guess? In the end it still kills you, so in the great scheme of things it doesn't really matter who makes it.

I feel the same way. Granted, it wouldn't have been a very interesting show if he'd just gone to work for Merck instead of in the black market, but in reality it's really stupid that the black market has to exist.

With the marijuana legalization campaign, I felt like people were starting to realize how dumb it is for drugs to be illegal and that the fallout in terms of the cartels and all the people in prison for drug offenses is really ridiculous, but then I read the comments here and see that we still have a long way to go in terms of people being willing to let other people choose how to manage their own lives.

In the US, alcohol was legal, then it wasn't, then it was again. Alcohol screws up a number of lives, more I'd wager than meth, but making it illegal didn't make it go away and just created a black market. Why people can't see the parallel with drugs is a puzzle. You could set Breaking Bad in the 1930s and have Walt & Jesse brewing liquor and it's the same show, only with the mob instead of the cartels.
