of course they are not going to make her canonically bi. Nor are they going to have them hook up.

Fandom seems to have not figured out that studios/TPTB have figured out that mentioned a slash fic will make the fanbase rabid. SPN does it all the time and the fans just keep taking the bait.

SPN has never come out and said any of their characters could be bi while they continuously make jokes about it on the show, it's pure queer-baiting. Haley is just stating her own opinion of her character, which people are allowed to be excited about, but I doubt anyone expects them to follow up on it. Hence - no baiting involved.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
it's ideas like this that make me think we really need to sit down and collectively have a good think about what 'queerbaiting' actually means in the year of our lord 2015

Well, I think people can like the actress for finding the idea cool? Honestly from all I've seen of her she just seems to be having a lot of fun with the character.

But yeah, that has no relation to canon at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it's queerbaiting, it's hardly the "old fashioned" variety. Classical queerbaiting is where there are constant jokes about oft-slashed characters being queer and copious amounts of ~pandering~ to slashers by putting their OTP in intimate situations, but any serious implication that the characters are anything but straight is shot down with such a vehement no homo that a frat boy would consider it mildly homophobic. Actors can participate in it, of course, but unless there's a pattern of queerbaiting in the canon, I really don't think that Atwell's personal opinion on Peggy's potential sexuality is baiting.

IA, and as far as I can remember Agent Carter has done no such thing. If Hayley thinks it likely that Peggy is bi that's cool (and frankly I'm very into the idea), but it isn't canon and there's been no jokes about it.

+1

I think this is a really good response.

Yeah, this. See also: TPTB talking about Sherlock, SPN, etc.

I just wish that if shows wanted to tease ships (slash or het) they'd do it via the canon and not by cutesy hashtags or having the actors joke about it.

This isn't about Agent Carter, I'm not that familiar with that fandom, but I've seen it in other fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
How do we know that the show is having Haley do this and she's not doing it on her own?

IDK about the other instances, but from that Q&A it just seems like she's trying to give a non-committal answer that doesn't sound closed-minded.

I'm just side-eyeing the idea that being "a modern-day woman" and being bisexual are somehow intrinsically linked.

annnnnd people like you continue to show that the term "queer baiting" has lost all meaning. if the show's creators said something like that and then proceeded to never give a hint towards Peggy's bisexuality on the show then maaaaybe that would be queer baiting. she's just the actress, dude. she was pandering a bit, but not queer baiting

Nothing to do with queerbaiting. It's not her fault if fans take her opinion as scripture and then are surprised if the canon never agrees with her.

Idk I'd say she's pandering more than queer-baiting tbh and while I generally don't like these kinds of questions being asked towards actors I appreciate that she seems okay with the idea of it, but that doesn't mean it's going to be canon at all(so hey I'll be sat here hoping that Angie is in season 2 and we can get some more friendship scenes between them).

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who actually wants to ship Peggy and Jarvis? They're so awesome together. :x

Shipping aside, the 'modern woman' comment is kind of silly, but I think it's cool that the actress is open minded about things, even if the show won't swing that way.

The thing is, the actress can believe her character is bi, play her as bi, consciously play her character as being attracted to/in love with another woman, but she can still only work with what the script gives her, what the director has everyone do, and what gets edited into the final cut that we see.

I believe Atwell is genuine when she supports bi characterization and same-sex ships, but what she wants is going to be way down the list in terms of whose vision really reaches the audience. And I don't think it's fair to blame her for 'baiting' us when she has a limited amount of control over the final product that a lot of people with varying levels of 'say' work on.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
The ending of Season 1 was practically like Korrasami. Srsly, anon, relax a bit.

It's not.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
And if that's her opinion or a way of nudging the showrunners/writers/network, then it's not pandering either. And to the people bugged about the 'modern day woman', I'm pretty sure that's in reference to the label and identifying.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
She's very sweet and good to her fans, and she is a bit of an activist herself. Generally she's just open minded and I think you all are reading way too much into that statement.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like queer-baiting because being modern has nothing to do with being attracted to women. The idea that all that is required to be bisexual is an open mind so "Why not?".
