What would you try if you were trying meat for the first time?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
If you were going to try meat for the first time in your life, what would you eat?

A nice tender cooked sirloin steak, maybe porterhouse. Very little seasoning, maybe just a touch of salt, let the meat speak for itself.

As somebody who was raised vegetarian, and has never eaten their whole lives - I think I would enjoy trying pulled pork or a ham sandwich. For some reason pork is one of the most appealing-looking meats to me. My favorite fake-meat product is Morningstar chicken nuggets, but I do not enjoy the thought of eating chicken in 'real life'.

Some variety of bird, because birds are the descendents of dinosaurs.

If I can't eat a T. rex, I want the next best thing.

This is a perfect answer.

The obvious answer is, like, a big thing of prime rib. And it's a really good answer. Like, there's no reason to throw out the obvious answer just because it's obvious.

But I think I might go instead for some really fantastic lamb - some chops, or maybe a braised shank.

I really can't decide. It's a toss up between cube steak, top round thin cut steak, or some chicken breast cooked till the skin is crunchy, with its natural juices drizzled on some noodles.

Moist brisket. So good

I know someone who actually did this.

It made her sick to eat meat for the first week or two.

Pork and beef seemed the worst.

Small amounts of chicken seemed to be easiest.

She had been a lifelong vegetarian but at the end of high school realized that she wouldn't have enough money to get her protein requirements from the vegetarian sources she was used to.

Good GRIEF where does she live where meat-eating is cheaper than vegetarianism????? For many years I ate little or no meat, because of the cost. Beans beans lentils lentils frozen peas nuts big chunks of tofu = really cheap where I am, especially if you shop wisely and take the time to prepare.

Are you one of those SF_drama people who claim that people on welfare shouldn't 'mooch' on the government and just live on Beans and Lentils if your poor?

Re: What would you try if you were trying meat for the first time?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell, where did you get that from what I said? I used to be poor (on welfare for a decade thanks to disability), and I ate a lotta beans and lentils. If someone who never ate meat felt they were forced to start eating meat, and endured sickness because of it, because they couldn't afford not to, I'm curious as to where the economics are such that meat is so darn cheap.

nayrt, but I'm not sure I see the issue with that? I get food stamps (and not much, at that), and I almost never buy meat because I enjoy like...eating every day? If I stock up on beans and lentils, that means that I'm guaranteed to have a full stomach most days. If I skimp on other stuff and buy meat, I get really great meals for a few days, and then a bunch of really shitty ones that wear off within an hour for a week. It's not really a nice way to live.

The exception is that sometimes bagged frozen chicken breasts go on sale, and I can comfortably get one of those. That'll last me a while. But they're not always on sale, so I don't always get them.

nayrt - I agree, but the problem with legumes is that to take advantage of cheap dried beans/lentils/chickpeas, etc. you really have to know how to cook AND have the facilities and time to do so. A badly seasoned, undercooked bean dish is a recipe for sadness and indigestion.

Re: What would you try if you were trying meat for the first time?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yep as the person who lived on them you need to have the time and facilities to prepare and cook them. Perhaps the woman in question was living somewhere where she couldn't cook veggo anymore? But it seems strange if it's just a question of food cost.

Also, when I started eating beans, I got a lot of indigestion at first, but I got used to it.

"The vegetarian sources she was used to" might have been stuff like Gardenburgers or Quorn, though, or possibly frozen dinners like Amy's or Kashi. Anything that highly processed is not going to be cheap.

AYRT Yeah I wondered that. But are there vegetarian people who don't know about cheaper vego options and would rather switch to eating meat?

But then, I hear funny things about some US people, like the woman from New York I met who had literally never eaten fresh vegetables til she came here. So maybe there's that going on, idk?

Preparing meat so that it's tasty is often faster and easier when you don't have many (or any) cooking skills. Making beans and lentils that don't taste like cardboard sludge is a little trickier, and it takes more ingredients and longer cooking time if you're using the cheapest option, i.e. dried beans/lentils.

AYRT Sure, I agree. That's not so much a money issue though, unless poverty is making you very stressed/tired. Anyway I didn't mean to sound judgey, I was just surprised since meat is so expensive and she used to be fine not eating it.

Medium rare ribeye, seasoned only with salt and pepper. But I'd only eat a few bites because it's not likely to agree with me and if I eat a ton I'll regret it... or so I've heard from other people who've tried it after being vegetarian for long periods of time.

Personally I recommend chicken or fish as a starter meat. They are both a lot easier than red meat, and can be very tasty.

Also, I grew up mostly vegetarian, but not totally as there was always the occasional visit to MacDonalds, Chinese takeaway, fish and chips or fried chicken from a takeaway store. The vast majority of that being the chicken.

I've been vegetarian for long enough that I don't really remember what meat tastes like, and if I were going to stop, I think I'd want to try fried chicken first. It looks/smells tasty. Or bacon.

I've been vegetarian, with very occasional fish, for a decade. I can say that if you were trying meat for the first time, you would NOT want something heavy or probably even red meat. You are going to feel sick and possibly vomit. I can say that from experience. You'd want a lighter white meat, like fish or poultry (not fried).

Just start small, whatever it is. Too much meat at once is not going to be easy to digest, and in theory it can actually be fatal to overdo it if you're not used to it.
