If you had to emigrate

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you had to emigrate and leave your country, where would you like to go instead?

I'd choose either the Bohemia region of Europe, or possibly the French Pyrénées around the Bagnères-de-Luchon area. I don't know why, but community feel you get in those areas just feels nice.

Switzerland. Or one of them other Nordic countries voted happiest place to live.

Switzerland would be nice to live in, if you can deal with the attack cows (no, really) but I don't think I could hack the winters in Scandiwegia. Maybe Denmark, then it is more just damp than it is cold and dark.

Norway would be good, now that they're rich from wisely investing their limited-time oil/gas money. just like we didn't Apparently they're very anti-immigration though?

Well I'm currently not in my home country, and I am job hunting for when my student visa expires... so I'd like to stay here in the UK and have a work visa. haha

I dunno. Switzerland, maybe. Or Norway. Norway would be cool.
The problem with these countries is that they're cold as fuck. Hard to enjoy gorgeous scenery when you're in subzero temperatures.

Maybe Spain. Does Spain get cold?

Finland, because high quality of living + the sort of extreme weather I'm already accustomed to. (I live in one of the areas of Canada that has -40C winters.)

Probably Australia, as I have family there.

Norway would be awesome, as well, but I don't think my husband could handle the weather. He can barely take Northeastern US winters.

Belgium. I fucking love that place. It's gorgeous, the food is great, and everyone I met was weirdly nice (I mean, I have to assume that it has its fair share of assholes just like any other country but everyone I met was almost suspiciously nice)

Somewhere with a temperate maritime climate. I come from Ireland, and I do not deal at all well with heat. The Pacific Northwest looks pretty good? I can go colder if I have to, but I'd still prefer coastal. Iceland also looks pretty good, though there'd be more of a language barrier there.

I love living in Australia as it is (so many different types of living and climates!) but if I had to choose umm.... Thailand maybe. Or I was all set to live there for a while but then the coup happened. I'm actually Irish too but I have no interest in their false summers, but other than that it seems nice :)

UK probably

too tied to my english-speaking ways, and Australia is out for obvious climactic reasons

Canada first for familiarity and family.

One of the Scandinavian countries for similarity to culture and a temperature that suits me.

New Zealand for family.

Italy or Ireland

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-08-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like changeable Irish weather. Also people there are ok with immigrants contrary to Scotland. A-aand Dublin is nice. Heather and stone planes are something to see.
I sort of like Italian weather, the sea is a plus, people are kinda nice, risotto is awesome. I don't speak italian but I can fix it.
Can't imagine what will ~make me emigrate. A crime? A sudden longing for foreign lands?

I've always thought Canada would be nice, but the cold would probably kill me, that and I can't drive which would make getting around... tricky.

A city in Switzerland or the UK? Those aren't very practical choices, though. I've been to both on short trips and liked them in ways I'd dismiss as embarrassing and childish, if you could get me to admit I liked them in the first place.

[insert anti-immigration jokes here]

But I'm an immigrant where I am now, and if that counts I'd like to stay.

Costa Rica!!

Or maybe somewhere in Europe.

Very compelling reasons for both, very very different choices...

I'd probably go back to the States.

I mean, I don't plan to -- my country has really shitty politics even by the standards of the region but the food, the weather, and the prices are just too good to leave. But I did spend most of my young adult years in the US so my support network would be pretty good. I don't enjoy the ~expatriate experience~ so I can't live in a place where I would be constantly reminded of my status as a foreigner, and of the 20+ countries I've been to, the US is the only one that passes the bar in that regard. Feels pretty much like a second home.

Right now my pet "If I win Lotto" statement is that I would buy a summerhouse in Queenstown, New Zealand. It's bound to be cooler than Brisbane is, and NZ is an English-speaking country not all that different to Australia, so culture-shock would be minimal.
