What's your favorite scary movie?

[personal profile] leisuretime 2015-09-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
September and October are going to be my "Scary and/or 'Scary' Movie Months" and I need suggestions. I'm definitely doing Devour, The Woman in Black, Jaws: The Revenge, and Nearly Dark.

So, what else should I watch? I've got a list of things I've liked in this new post, but perhaps the more relevant (and shorter) information is things I DON'T like.

Please don't rec me (but feel free to gab about them in the replies with other fans if you want):
  • Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2
  • Cabin in the Woods
  • Alien
  • The Exorcist

The Conjuring. Best horror movie I have seen in a long time.
The Awakening is a decent horror movie.
The Babadook, though is is more psychological horror.
You're Next.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
Pontypool is a great zombie movie.

All of the above (except The Conjuring) are on netflix.

+1 to everything on this list.

Although I didn't particularly enjoy The Babadook, I won't say it was a bad film. Just not my taste.

I haaaaaaate horror movies. Especially jump scares, disgusting/disturbing deaths and gore. But I can somewhat appreciate them if the plot was interesting enough and justified the creepiness.

My favorite that I've seen is probably Sixth Sense, because even though it was creepy, the plot justified it, and it didn't go for cheap scares.

Sixth Sense was pretty creepy good. I haven't watched it a second time, and I'm wondering how it holds up once the twist is known.

I've always loved the Child's Play series, though I think the best ones are still 1&2. I'm not a fan of the newest retcon movie, but Brad Dourif's daughter did a great job, so I'd also rec Curse of Chucky.

What what do in the shadows is also good, horror/comedy.

I think I've seen the first Child's Play (I know I've seen parts of it, at least) And I know I've seen the third one, because it starred Justin Whalen (aka Jimmy Olsen 2.0 from Lois & Clark), and 12-year-old-me liked him. But I haven't seen any of the others.

What's your beef with Alien if you don't mind my asking? (I can guess where you're coming from with Evil Dead though.)

Anyway failing that I'll gladly recommend:

Jacob's Ladder
Night of the Living Dead (1968 version)
Susperia
John Carpenter's The Thing
Videodrome
Amityville II (ignore the others)
28 Days Later
Session 9

And I've heard very good things about It Follows.

An American Werewolf in London is my annual Halloween tradition

I can only pick one?

Goddamn.

The best horror film I saw recently was probably Antichrist, though I'm not sure it should exactly be billed as such. Highly disturbing film, and would heartily rec.

I liked "The Conjuring", though I personally didn't find it really scary.

"The Strangers" on the other hand is a movie I will never ever see again. I don't think a movie has ever scared me as much as this. Even the trailer is terrifying in my opinion, but I'm very much scared of intruders and this movie didn't help with that. It was good though, and I have a friend who loves it (this was also apparently the first horror movie to actually scare her)

Red Dragon. Silence of the Lambs is also good.

'Halloween'. The original one. Simple premise, deals with a fear and scenario that anyone can relate to, with a serial killer stalking your town.

(I can certainly enjoy horror films about ghosts and demons and other supernatural dangers, don't get me wrong, but I tend to prefer horror films that deal with real life things that could actually happen to people).

And while there are murders throughout, and a little bit of blood here and there, the focus is still on the actual scary story instead of just turning into a bland gorefest.

Also, Michael Myers just plain terrifies the crap out of me. Easily one of the scariest horror movie villains ever.

I'd also add the original 'Psycho' to the list. Can't get any creepier than Norman Bates, really.

The Changeling. Yes, it's old, but it's also both subtle and scary as hell. I wouldn't say it's my "favorite," since I don't actually really like scary movies, but I would say it was definitely well-done and genuinely frightening.

Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. The Village would be one of my picks, too, but it's not really in line with the first two I listed. I may be an outlier in liking that movie.

Genuinely surprised nobody's recced Ju-On yet. (NOT The Grudge, which was weaksauce.) Saw it in theaters, and it genuinely scared me more than almost anything else has.

The first Saw movie.
Final Destination.

And I want to say Identity, but I think that might be thriller more than horror? Idk but I really liked it.

Not really scary but I love this kind of subtle creepiness: The Others.
Old but pretty great when it comes to achieving an effect with lights and sound: The Haunting (1963)
I have a soft spot for Japanese ghost movies, and I really liked "Tales of Terror: Haunted Apartment" and "Nightmare Detective 2" (the first one is terrible and is not needed for the second one). I also love anthologies, and the Tales Of Terror From Tokyo series is quite nice. There are actually several anthologies in this style, but I can't remember the titles/can't find them atm.

Halloween (1978)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nightmare on Elm Street
An American Werewolf in London
Fright Night (1985)
Jaws
Poltergeist
Scream
Tremors
Silver Bullet
Monster Squad

If you're looking for ones a little more like the ones on your list maybe try Critters, The Blob (1988), Halloween II (1981), Night Breed, Fright Night 2, and Ghost Ship.

Wicker Man (the original, NOT the stupid Nik Cage remake!)
The Witchfinder General, also known as The Conqueror Worm
