"I hated the manga so much that I didn't even realise my favourite studio had created an anime. But I'm pretty sure I'm just mad because I think Nightow can do better than this. Bonus: After reading B3 I seriously started to wonder if Trigun was as great as I've always believed."

I hear the anime's completely different from the manga. I haven't read the manga, but I think the anime's pretty good (except for the fact that its last episode has been indefinitely delayed since July).

Sorry about Nightow, though.

OP

It's just... bad. Charmless. The location has no chance to shine, and the main character is your standard gormless but attentive teenager. Think Renton Thurston without Eureka as a driving motivation. There are hundreds of Badass Ragtag Team Fights The Things stories out there, and there's nothing but Nightow's name to compel me to keep buying volumes. If he wants that old dude to be the main character then he should have the balls to just make him the main character, because the main guy from B3 ain't a patch on Hellsing's Kitten, so it's no way to be shown a likeable character from an outsider perspective.

tl;dr I liked this manga better when it was The Demon Ororon and it was bleak as fuck.

I don't know this series or indeed even the author but my god, this comment. Wow. Presenting: the lesser spotted anime hipster in its natural habitat.

OP

Bite me, the comment wasn't meant for you. I've got two degrees in literature and I've been collecting manga for a decade. Why should I pretend I'm only interested in things with a certain number of readers? I collect fashionable manga and less mainstream stuff. Trigun was actually very mainstream, and the anime aired on Adult Swim iirc (I'm not American). I don't see why I shouldn't have comparatively niche interests like any nerd.

Of course it wasn't meant for me, you can tell by how it reeks faintly of that desire to sound clever and well-informed. Those dual degrees must be doing a lot for ya. Really, how long were you holding that in, just waiting for some poor soul to bite?

I've been thinking about giving the manga a try, since I liked the anime but felt it lacked a certain sense of team cohesion, but it sounds like that problem is in the source? Everything about the anime is "Here is your party, like them," without really putting in the effort to develop each character and their relationships. I'm pretty sure Chain has 3 lines in 11 eps. And even when it gives up a glimpse of something really interesting or heartfelt, it's discarded an episode later. And of course, the final episode is in limbo, which sucks (even though, to be honest, I don't expect that the finale will give us any answers or closure anyway).

But I still love Trigun. Nothing can pry Trigun from me.

Yeah! That's it! That's the feeling I've been trying to describe. I don't think it helps that I was reading it at around the same time as Gangsta., which is kind of the polar opposite in that respect. It kind of seems like he's imitating Kouta Hirano's style, where stuff plays out in the negative space of events, and you sort of witness characters trusting each other differently over time, without seeing much of the domesticity which must be aiding that closeness. Like... maybe Nightow isn't good enough to carry that off. Maybe the main character needs to be brash, or needs to keep his friends at arm's length. I guess he was trying hard to do the opposite of Trigun. I guess he achieved that.

What's really frustrating at least from the anime side of things is that if you watch the ending sequence, it showcases a lot of what is actually missing in the show itself: the whole gang together hanging out and having fun and showcasing their personality quirks. It feels like a group that I really could get into an enjoy, were those dynamics fleshed out in the show. I was even thinking of requesting it for Yuletide, to see if fandom could fill in those blanks.

Maybe it's just that "found family" is such a stock trope of shonen manga/anime that Nightow took it for granted this time. With Trigun, Vash was such an important figure within his own world that it felt right that everyone knew and gravitated toward him and fell into place. Leonardo, not so much (which is a shame because damn, those eyes, what a great design).

I don't *think* you've been misjudging Trigun. I loved it too, both the anime and the manga (though god was the art difficult to parse! Half of the battles I had no idea what was going on). B3 is really different in terms of feel, I think. It also tries to be a lot more ensemble cast than Trigun ever was.

It was a bit scattered for me, but I did enjoy it and found it kind of refreshing relative to other shows that have come out recently (though my favorite of this season is Gangsta. That one's fun~)

The anime was pretty solid. Not incredible or anything but decent action anime to while away a few hours with some great epsiodes (see the episode with the vampires introduction, or with the siblings) and some poor ones.

OP

Yeah... I was recced it by a friend who knows how much I love BONES, but he used the Japanese title and I didn't catch that we'd been talking about the same story for a bit. His knowledge is usually pretty solid though. I'm kind of interested in whether BONES can make anything of it, as I'm not really a fan of a lot of their original works, but they seem to be turd-polishing pros.

Weird question, but what font is this?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

It's not weird! I like fonts too, and I collect free ones. One of my secrets got called illegible the other day, heh. My bad. Anyway, I don't save as .psd, so I can't be sure, but I'm guessing it was Jenna Sue?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Me too! I've had a secret called illegible in the past too so I guess I get overexcited with fonts as well. Thanks!

Screw you Nightow is godly.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I want to believe in him so I keep buying the books, but I keep not enjoying them. :( It's retroactively dampening my eternal excitement over Trigun existing.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Then stop buying them. Seriously, I get trying something new by an author you like and not liking the new thing, but if you hate THAT much, then stop.

OP, you sound so salty replying to every single comment. Chill out.

OP

I'm fine, just that one troll upthread throwing me off. Plus I guess anything making Trigun look bad by association is kind of sad for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I liked the manga and the anime (and Trigun, too).

Different stroke for different folks and all that...
