Tumblr question

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a question about Tumblr. If you follow someone, do they see your posts even if they don't follow you?

I'm asking because someone just asked me to unfollow them. Which I don't get how that does anything for them that blocking wouldn't.

And the only reason I can figure they wanted me not to follow them is because I ship their NOTP. Even though we've gotten along fine before, even though we haven't talked a whole lot.

no unless they check your blog

some people are really weird who can follow their public blog

They don't see your posts, some people are just overdramatic about who is following them. All they will see is any reblogs/likes/replies to posts they make (but also you can turn notifications off so)

No.

They're being over dramatic. Up to you if you want to keep following them or not. If they start abusing you, report and block. Don't engage.

Unless you're like having a bad day and enjoy that

No, they won't see your posts unless they follow you. If they're worried about your posts turning up on their dashboard, they could just block you or use Tumblr Savior and blacklist you. They're being melodramatic because demanding that someone unfollow you makes it feels like they're the ones in charge and they want to shame you.

Basically, they're a fucking moron and a drama llama.

No they can't. That is a thing that childish tumblr users demand of people who like things that they don't like, because they don't want to be associated in any way.

I think it is polite to unfollow somebody if they ask.

Honestly? Maybe they're being overdramatic, but I can see why people care who follows them. If I have a personal history, or a personal reason to feel uncomfortable with someone (I know you said your interactions were pleasant - but heck, who knows what is going on in their mind), I don't like knowing said person is seeing this thing I do for my own enjoyment; something personal to me.

On a site like tumblr where anyone can see your stuff, privacy doesn't mean much, I know. There are ton of faceless followers I have, who I would probably be uncomfortable with if I knew them better. Still, if I had an open line of communication with them, realized there was a reason I wanted them to unfollow me, I would ask.

Also, a lot of underage bloggers feel uncomfortable with adults following them, too, if age is a factor here. Again, personally I understand at least. (I myself am not comfortable following minors - I don't want to see a 15 year old squeel about their sexual fantasies, no thank you sir).

The user can block them, though and get exactly that. This is literally the kind of thing you say just to be hurtful, not to protect yourself.

I think ayrt should unfollow because who needs that kind of person in your life, but for their own sake, not that user's, or possibly just good manners.

"Also, a lot of underage bloggers feel uncomfortable with adults following them, too, if age is a factor here."

That's understandable, but it's on them to manage their own privacy settings and anonymity. Deferring that responsibility to... well, ANYONE else is silly. I'm uncomfortable with strangers seeing me naked. That's why I go into a changing room when I try on clothes at the store. What I DON'T do is start stripping off in the middle of the women's section and tell strangers to avert their eyes because I'm uncomfortable with people seeing my naked body.

They may also want you to unfollow them so that they can freely bash the NOTP without any potential lashback from you.

Personally, if anyone asked that of me I wouldn't, but that's because I'm a cantankerous old bitch.

I do wonder if that person will also be asking any followers the two of you have in common to unfollow them (or you) as well -- because heaven forbid someone reblog you.

(Sheesh, some people are so ridiculous.)

The block feature has recently been changed, so now if you block someone, it forces them to unfollow you. It's no longer necessary to approach people and ask them to unfollow you; you can just quietly block them and move on with your life. That person is either unaware of the update or is being childish.

I had a blog briefly in 2013... iirc it had that feature then, so there's not much excuse not to know about it.

It's a block feature now. It's not just ignoring someone. The block blocks all interaction rather than just making a blog invisible.
