[FIFA, World Soccer Championship]

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
it's called the World Cup, and the next one is taking place in Russia

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. If you're going to criticize FIFA (which, by all means do), get your facts right.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the "next" was a really, really dumb slip-up on my part, sorry. My criticism still stands, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it's not harmless. Last I heard, the number of deaths associated with building the stadium was over 1200. And they're basically treating foreign construction workers like slave labor.

Yeah, it's...quite bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the number of deaths had risen to 4,000 already? Or was that the estimate until completion?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be 4000. I haven't kept up on it so I went with the last one I was sure I heard. I wouldn't be surprised if it was much larger.

I mean, everyone in the world already hates them. They clearly don't give a shit about being total fucks as long as they keep getting money.

My feelings with both the World Cup and the Olympics is that some permanent location needs to be picked and permanent stadiums set up. Because as it stands now both of these are horrible for whatever country they end up in, particularly for the poor people. The Olympics location should be in Greece, though every country should contribute equally to building it. Not sure where the World Cup location would be.

england, obvs

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
it's coming home imo

That makes the most sense, I suppose.

I could see rotating between England & a country like Brazil that has an enormous footie tradition.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
hmmm a good point, but a counterpoint, if i may: it's coming home

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Rather than do a permanent location (which no one would agree to - such a built in home-field advantage for a team (/home continent. If it's always in the same European country it's easier for other European fans to attend and puts fans in farther away countries at a disadvantage)), I think they should take advantage of resources already within the country rather than build something new. I know that they got some deserved shit for it, but I liked the scaled-down stadiums of the WWC this year. I'd rather they use what's already been built in a location than erect something brand new for the grandeur of a tournament that lasts a month.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair that can be problematic, because it means that you're limited to places that either (A) have hosted the WC before or (B) are rich and big enough to just have a ton of huge stadiums lying around.

and maybe it would be for the best to limit it to those places, but it would be very politically difficult

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nice thought but Greece is utterly broke, there's no way they could financially manage to host a single Olympics let alone all the continued Olympic games for years tocome.

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-09-15 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
No, everyone puts equal money into it. No one country bears more of the burden. Greece would just be the ideal location for historical reasons. But elsewhere would work fine too.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, the actual tournament will probably go off largely without a hitch. Major sporting events, even ones plagued by massive difficulties, generally do.

The Olympics in Athens and Beijing, and the World Cups in South Africa and Brazil all had their issues, from riots to human rights concerns to poverty and financial collapse. But every one of those tournaments went off fairly smoothly once the actual competition came around. Qatar will be the same.

It's a travesty that they got awarded the event. There will be massive human rights violations in the leadup. But waiting for the event to collapse in on itself is fruitless, because it won't.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
+1, they'll just bring in massive military force, make everything look clean for the cameras and no-one will give a shit. Unless an expensive footballer drops dead in the heat, that would work.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't they already move it to winter?

Which, lol in itself, but.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually the only thing that might still stop it from happening because most European countries are not happy to move their league matches.
