Even though I'm not American, I decided to watch some of the American presidential debates out of curiosity and HOLY FUCKING SHIT. JUST. WHAT THE FUCK.

WHAT. THE FLYING. FUCK?!

Is this guy for real? Please tell me this is some sort of elaborate prank the American government is playing. THIS GUY CANNOT BE FOR REAL.

For those of you who haven't seen the above video and don't want to watch all 40 minutes of it. Here's what happens:

Donald Trump: I am super super rich. Look at how rich I am. Do you see how rich I am? Being rich is what I am best at, and I am going to make America rich too, because I am really really good at being rich.

Donald Trump: *is asked to address a specific issue, quickly changes the subject and starts blathering about North Korea*

Donald Trump: *childishly resorts to ad hominem at the first opportunity*

Everyone else in the room: *avoids directly saying they think Trump is off his rocker, but you can tell they're thinking it*

Donald Trump: Our country isn't a real country because there are too many illegal immigrants. I am going to build a wall between Mexico and America. Then we will have a real country.
Jeb Bush: That's fucking stupid. Don't do that.
Donald Trump: JEB BUSH DOESN'T APPROVE OF MY BRILLIANT PLAN BECAUSE HIS WIFE IS MEXICAN.
Jeb Bush: Excuse you, rude much? I think you should apologize to my wife.
Donald Trump: NO.

Donald Trump: My opponents are all sell-outs, I am the best candidate because I paid for my campaign with my own money instead of letting myself be bribed by donors!
Jeb Bush: Um, actually, the only person who's ever tried to bribe me was you.
Donald Trump: YOU'RE LYING THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
Jeb Bush: No, that totally happened.
Donald Trump: LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!

Donald Trump: VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM.
Ben Carson: Hello, I am a scientist and there is no proof that vaccines cause autism.
Donald Trump: YOU ARE WRONG AND SCIENCE IS WRONG.

Thankfully, the Trump boom is now receding. Unthankfully, most of the other choices are still not great.

I think he's a laughingstock to many of us but there are some people who take him seriously, and they scare me.

I find your play-by-play hilarious though so thank you for writing it!

(My take: I don't think Trump actually wants to be president. I think he's going to milk this campaign for attention and ego-stroking as long as he can, though.)

He isn't going to be the Republican front runner. I am 100% certain the Republicans are using him to make the rest of them look really sane in comparison. Sure, Jeb Bush has some shitty opinions but he isn't as bad as Donald Trump.

As an outsider looking at American politics, this is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with. Donald Trump is being used to make the rest of the Republican candidates look sane and electable.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but that's honestly the only thing I can come up with. The alternative is too terrifying to contemplate, considering the amount of power and influence America has over other countries in the world, including my own.

And while "polls" have Donald Trump in the lead, those polls are only polling people who would vote on those kinds of idiotic things. That does not equate to people who actually vote.

I have two problems with this theory.

One, he's not really making them look good - he's making them look like shitty, weak politicians. And this is especially true of Jeb.

Two, if this were the case, they would be holding their shit together a lot better, and they wouldn't be doing anything that would fuck them up later. And this is not the case. Most of the candidates have been panicking (with one exception that I'll get to later). And Trump has done actual, real harm to their election chances because he has forced them to shift their positions on issues, especially immigration, and forced them to make themselves unelectable.

The one exception to this is Ted Cruz - who actually HAS made an alliance with Trump, at least a tacit one if not an explicit one. And as a result, he's behaved dramatically different to the other candidates in regards to Trump, and not attacked him dramatically, and things like that. Which to me really proves the point. We have an example of someone who is actually doing what you're describing here, and he's acting totally differently from any of the other candidates. And also, frankly, the fact that Ted Cruz is doing something is in and of itself evidence that the Republican establishment is not doing so.

But the thing is that no one hears about anyone else. They are all focusing on crazy Trump. Donald Trump has been trending in my FB news feed for weeks but I've seen nothing about the other candidates. Which would make you think, See he has all that support! But the Republicans are not going to choose him. They just aren't.

In regards to Ted Cruz, why shouldn't he make an "alliance". It doesn't hurt him because he still looks like the sane one in the relationship. And when Trump gets ousted, he gets a boost from the Trump supporters who see him as an ally.

I've thought that from the start of this whole mess. He is there to make Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio look sane. But what scares me is so many people seem to be taking him seriously.

I also think that it part of the anti-incumbency thing going on right now. The three top Republican contenders are all newcomers to the politics and for a while Trump was the best known of them. Name recognition is still a big advantage at this stage in the race

Urghhh Trump makes me roll my eyes so hard. I can't take anyone over the age of about 30 who unironically calls people haters.

Also the autism thing. The way he phrased it made it sound like he thinks a kid can just develop autism like the flu. No, autism is a developmental condition you are born with. It affects your development as you grow. Developmental. (I swear more people need to be reminded of what developmental means when they talk about autism.)

Yeah, about the best explanation I've seen for his behavior is that he is doing one hell of a trollfest of the GOP. If that were the case, I'd find it quite entertaining. But considering he's always had a pretty pompous personality in general, and people have actually responded well to some of the stupid things he says...kind of sucks any potential entertainment out of his being around.

Mind, I've always thought he was obnoxious, well before he ran for president, and never understood the fascination with him. At least in the past I could generally avoid him, however-I never watched stuff like "Celebrity Apprentice" and things of that sort, so aside from occasionally hearing his name pop up in the news and whatnot, he wasn't really on my radar.

Now that he's an actual presidential candidate, he's harder to ignore as a result. And I'm longing for the day when he drops out of the race, and hoping that after he does that he can just go away in general for a really, really long time.

I read that story, the theory that, whether he intends to or not, he's punching a hole in the GOP narrative by underlining in mile high neon that *this is the base they're all pandering to, and this is what it wants, this is what the GOP has made for itself.*

If that's true, I almost admire it. Mostly it just scares the hell out of me either way.

I sincerely hope that is the case. It's the only way to make his time in the race even remotely tolerable.

But you're right that either way it's scary. Either he genuinely believes this stuff, which is something we really don't need more of, or he's reminding us through his trolling that all the legit candidates in the GOP DO, and have supporters to boot. Enough to make you want to cry, really.

Watching Trump's candidacy unfold has been equal parts hilarious and horrifying. I'm baffled that anyone takes him seriously (and if I hear one more person say, "I like him because he has the guts to say what we're all thinking," I might just lose it. No, no that isn't what we're all thinking, and having a penchant for running one's mouth doesn't make one qualified to be president. In fact, I'd argue the opposite).

I find myself wanting to believe in some Rovian conspiracy to use Trump to raise campaign funds and weed out the pack, but the dismal truth is that I'm not certain the party really understands just how far away from populism they really are.
