What TV show/movie/book do you think had the best portrayal of depression?

Add other mental/physical illnesses and disabilities if you want.

The Vincent Van Gogh episode of Doctor Who is such a spot-on portrayal of what depression is like, at least for me. That is one of my favorite tv episodes of any show ever.

I thought that as well.

That was my first thought too.

Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't seen it. Stop here if you care.

I also really appreciate that it wasn't a big happy ending where they succeeded in changing his life. Because it's just not that simple. And I like the speech about how happy moments are important even when they don't solve everything.

The main character in Chroncle was pretty clearly depressed to me, and it really hit home

I've always liked "low key" depression portrayals. And for the best portrayals of that I'd say Steve Rogers (mostly in The Winter Soldier), Tony Stark (though this is more for my second), and Dean from Supernatural.

I also seeing PTSD portrayed. Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 is an obvious example. I like Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte's characters in Warrior. All the guys in Band of Brothers. Many of the characters in The Hunger Games.

This is going to sound strange, but there was a scene in Rick and Morty where a character attempted suicide. Barring the fantastic method he used, it was one of the most realistic portrayals I've seen.

I think Off the Map did pretty well with medium-term Major Depressive Disorder.

Super has the best portrayal of real life antisocial personality disorder by far. BY FAR.

Not any of those, but it would be remiss not to mention Hyperbole and a Half.

Also, Dorothy Sayers's approach to PTSD in the Wimsey books is so fascinating. It's not The Best because so much was unknown about it at that time, but from a "what we talked about when we talked about PTSD in 1930s popular culture" perspective it's a good source.

When my depression hits, I want to hole up in my room and never leave, so Elsa hit home for me there.

Adam Parrish, from The Raven Cycle, is a pretty good representation of what happens when you're constantly assaulted and threatened. Even when you escape that environment, you still feel the rage and sometimes your own damned brain replaces the abuse. (Fuck you, Brain. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.)

http://www.depressioncomix.com/ touches on pretty much everything under the sun, and I've found it pretty relate able, if depressing.

I am VERY, very impressed by Dickens' portrayal of PTSD in A Tale of Two Cities. Seriously, there were many things I expected from Dickens, but this was not one of them.

I'm going to be judged so, so hard for this, but Frozen could easily be a fantasy version of my own experience having a severe anxiety disorder and other emotional problems. Except for the part where everything turns out okay and she's happy and functional enough at the end to handle ruling a goddamn country, but that's Disney for you.

The movie A Single Man has the best depiction of grief and suicidality I've ever seen. In fact, if you are currently experiencing those issues, you probably shouldn't watch that movie without a spotter, so to speak.

Ordinary People gives a great look at those feelings, as well (from the point of view of someone who had attempted suicide, was in inpatient treatment, and is trying to adjust to life back at home again).

I like metaphorical portrayals over anything else, and in that regard Silent Hill 2 and Lone Survivor are great examples.

Mark Waid's Daredevil was often so on point about depression.

As a metaphor, the movie The Babadook; and for semi-fiction, some of comedian Maria Bamford's recent standup and short skits, which draw a lot on her struggles with OCD/BPD. It's not as straightforward a depiction because she often favors a sort of surreal humor, but many of her observations feel straight-on.

Homestuck! I feel like there's a bunch of characters portraying depression in different ways.

My favorite is Aradia, though. Aradia is dead for a long time--like, she starts the story off being a literal ghost. It's shown she used to be bright and friendly and willing to stand up against injustices, but then she died and she just stopped caring about things. She didn't have the drive to do anything; she did things, but she was just going through the motions because of what had to be. She went through periods of anger and fruitless attempts at rebellion but sank back into being lifeless. She had to die thousands of times, and because of her time powers, she just respawns (sort of) in the same circumstances, and it just goes around in circles for so long. She just can't seem to escape it and she can't seem to bring herself to care all that much; she can only go through the motions.

Then some magical shenanigans happened and she's alive again and very enthusiastic about being alive again, but she hasn't forgotten what she used to be like, and likes to help people in similar circumstances, like Dave and Sollux.

That's generally my experience, except with no awesome magical time powers or fairy wings, sadly.

Kenneth Branagh's Wallander.

Better Call Saul does interesting things with the main character having to deal with his brother's illness. The effects of his brother's isolation is pretty well done. And Jimmy's depression is pretty well done too, though not focused on.
