Holiday Shopping Thread

Ask for recs for that hard to shop person, or ask for reviews about something you are thinking of buying. Or vent about how terrible it is!

I need to buy something for someone who's huge into Star Wars (more an old school fan than a prequel fan but he doesn't completely hate those). Problem is, I have no idea what he already has.

He also likes tools, but I don't know which tools he has. He watches almost exclusively on netflix and gets his music from itunes (mostly follows podcasts) so DVDs or albums are out. He also roleplays. He likes high-end techie stuff but we spend about $20 to $30 each (he's worth $5 in truth because he's an ass). He has very little free time, and won't spend it on reading. He does like booze but he's pretty snobby about what kind he likes.

I'd like to avoid gift cards. Any suggestions?

Does he like knick knacks? What are some other games/movies he knows? What about artwork?

They're trying not to clutter their house, so knick knacks are out. They do play board games but they seem to have all the ones they want. I'm not sure what video games he has, and he hasn't mentioned playing anything. For movies, other than Star Wars, he liked Real Genius and all the Marvel movies. Pretty sure he has most of those. And they have the Pixar/Disney movies for his kids.

I've never heard him liking artwork.

Shirts? There are lots of Star Wars shirts. If you think he might have most of them, try something like Tee-Fury where the have one-day only shirts, sometimes Star Wars.

Day of the Shirt will show you what every one of those one-day shirt sites are offering: https://dayoftheshirt.com/

I see these going in his bar/man cave/whatever. They are so cool. I would totally buy them for my husband if we didn't already have so much damned artwork!

Maybe something like a Lightsaber pen http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/d9f4/ (I was given the Yoda one for Christmas one year and love it; they're out of stock here but you might be able to find one elsewhere?)

Or chopsticks? http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f16c/

Or a C3PO and R2-D2 bowl set! http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/imrs/

What about coffee mugs? Target and Kohls have a bunch of Star Wars mugs and stuff like that if you think he'd enjoy that.

You mentioned that you're a writer; would that be an option?

Also, used books. You can find really cheap ones online and they always make great presents.

A couple of years ago I had NO money and I'm shit a crafting, too. I gave my relatives all little boxes that I found at thrift stores, and filled them with little 'fortune cookie' messages. Some of the messages were things that I liked about them, some were memories, others were just words of encouragement. I could personalize each person's present based on how we interacted (like my grandma's was mostly memory stuff and what I loved about her, but my cousin got a lot of messages that were quotes from our favorite shows). It didn't cost much (about 10 dollars for the boxes and I got some nice thick paper to write the messages on), and everyone liked them. They do come with a rule: you can't read the messages all at once. I wrote fifty messages for each person, and told them that they had to save the messages for when they were feeling down or having a bad day.

Yeah, I guess a fancy...fedora? Trilby? Black, most likely.

Not sure where you are in the world but ASOS or Ebay are probably your best bet:

My advice to you all

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Gift cards. Gift cards, gift cards, gift cards.

They're not bad gifts. They're not lazy gift. They're power. They are free money that the recipient can use to buy the thing they want, but

a) No one thought to get them, or
b) They didn't think to tell anyone they wanted, or
c) They were afraid to ask for because it's nerdy/embarrassing/personal/expensive/etc.

Gift cards. To their favorite store, to their closest store, to their local grocery store, to a shoe store, to Starbucks, to Amazon, to a gas station.

Prepaid Visa and Mastercard are also acceptable.

They make fantastic stocking stuffers, or stick that sucker in a little box, and put the little box in a bigger box, and continue until you run out of boxes, and then wrap that giant freaking box, and they will not be disappointed there isn't a car in it, because it's a gift card and they can buy shit they want with it.

tl;dr: Gift cards.

You can't really go wrong with gift cards imo. (Unless you just hate the store the gift card is for, or you don't really have anything you want there. If I'm going to buy a gift card I tend to get it at a place I know the person likes and shops at often, or I ask them what their preference is.)

Last year I think I got something like $80 in Starbucks cards because it's the only thing people know for sure I'll like. It was awesome and I was 100% grateful and I gleefully spent the hell out of them.

Re: My advice to you all

(Anonymous) 2015-11-25 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, they can be nice if you actually know what the person likes. I keep getting gift cards for stuff I don't like. Starbucks wouldn't work for me. I also don't like mediocre chain restaurants. Grocery and gas would be nice, but people rarely get those because they don't seem as festive.

I'm just going to buy everyone gift cards. I'm so done with holiday shopping, it's a nightmare. Cards are easier and I don't have to spend 2 hours wrapping them.

A few years ago, a friend started getting me gift cards. I realized how much I loved that and so now he and I just buy each other gift cards for birthdays/holidays. It's great.

So I decided to the same with another friend. Got her a Target gift card because she lives near a target and I figured she could use it on food too. OMG she made such a big deal out of it! Now I'm slowly trying to wean myself off buying gifts for her general "Oh let's just send time together" because rather than tell me what she wants, she gives me a list of things not to buy.

What I'm going to give mom depends on whether or not my dad will buy her a smartphone (she's not too convinced that she needs one but almost everyone agrees that it would be much easier for her to use it than her tiny, old cellphone.) - and they can't make up their minds so it's driving me nuts.

My father's birthday was last week and I had a present but now I'm struggling to come up with something else for Christmas.

My uncle has started intruding on our Christmas the last two years and he'll be here again and I have no idea what to give him.

Luckily, I'm not obligated to get my brother anything because he won't get me anything either and we're good that way.

And I'm really tempted to get an amazon prime trial for 30 days for december. That sounds like it would make sense.
