If there was a AO3 setting that somehow allowed you to keep users who never or rarely comment - say, less than 1 comment per 100 fics read - from reading my stories?

I would click that box hard enough to create a supernova. And I would hope most writers would, too.

I wish AO3 let you block other users

That is a sure fire way to get a thousand comments of "Cool fic" by people reaching a quota.

I'd like to see a list of users who have clicked said box, to know who the "validate me" assholes in the fandom are.

I find Steve/Tony fans, and the size of that fandom, in the MCU completely baffling.

it's basically all from the comics, i still think people would ship it without the comic influence but i don't think it would have been anywhere near as big.

True facts, actually. Since Rom's bombs kept the Dominion away for a while, and he helps keep that station running. Quark provides lots of vital services as well.

A pattern I just noticed about my favorite and least favorite characters: If there's a male character I see as a lot like myself, he's usually my favorite. If there's a female character I see as a lot like myself, I usually hate her.

I'm female.

The fact there are assholes who continue to rec Jessica Jones to me, even AFTER being reminded several times that I'm seriously triggered by rape, just makes me wish I could reach through the internet and actually stab people. Yes, I know it's very well done and realistic, that's why I don't want to watch it. No television show is worth aggravating my PTSD when I'm FINALLY getting to the point I can watch TV again without having someone pre-screen it for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Are they by any chance the same sort of people who rag on stuff like Game of Thrones for how it handles rape?

If so, lol.

(lol at the stupidity and hypocrisy, that is. Not what they're doing to you. That's really horrible of them.)

Re: Since there's so many secrets about it lately

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow that is so many levels of fucked up.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's the "we NEED to support Jessica Jones because it's ~IMPORTANT. And that's more important then our discomfort or personal tastes" people.

Re: Since there's so many secrets about it lately

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry.

The thing is... I think there's people who find comfort in visiting stories and movies that relate to an experience they've had. So they can't understand not wanting to just because you went through it.

(For instance, that's why cancer storylines are so popular. Most people know someone who's been affected by it directly or indirectly, so they can relate, and if it's affected them directly, they want to read/watch all about it as a source of comfort. And yes, there is a HUGE difference between that and triggering material,* but they may not respect the difference.)

*Although there's plenty of people who are sick of everything being cancer cancer cancer, too. Like me.

I think you should watch it. Not for yourself, but it is ground breaking and if you want more support for women in the media, you need to support things like this.

I used to defend my fandom friends and say they really were my friends.

But looking back, about half of them were terrible people. And many of them were not my friends in the least.

I hate it when a character is put in suspended animation or cryostasis for x-ty amount of years and other characters/rl people are like "omg they were born x-ty years ago. they're so old!". Fuck no. They're the exact same age as when they were put on ice. It's been, like, two minutes for them. They weren't conscious of the time that passed. IT DOESN'T COUNT.

I think I'm getting burned out on gaming. Too many games with trivial modifications to 30-year-old mechanics. And the games with innovative mechanics are too thin to hold my interest for long.

Maybe I should just go back to chess or something.

I sometimes take a fandom and put in people from another fandom with the same first, last, or nicknames in their place and try to imagine what they would do, how they would behave, how other characters would react to them, how the story would change, etc. It’s just a thought exercise, just to see if I can come up with a story construction that works. But I don’t think I would ever actually write it out and post it anywhere because it feels like it comes from the wrong place for fic (technical versus emotional).

Ex. (Meredith) Rodney from Stargate Atlantis and/or Derek from Teen Wolf in Grey’s Anatomy, Steve from Marvel Cinematic Universe or Daniel from Stargate SG-1 in Hawaii Five-0, Miss Parker from Pretender in Leverage, etc.

If I confess and I end up making it afterall, then everybody will know where it came from.
