Image: Six pictures of female characters (In order: Captain Amelia, Treasure Planet; Elektra King, The World is Not Enough; Rarity, My Little Pony; Rayne, the Bloodrayne video game; Nala, The Lion King; and Kitty Softpaws, Puss in Boots.)

Text: I've always liked female characters who could kick ass in one form or another. When I was younger, I assumed it was just a solidarity/Girl Power thing.

Now, however, I'm starting to wonder if it's because I'm generally pretty passive, and I just like seeing women do things I know I could never do.

things I know I could never do

That right there is patriarchal brain washing. You have a responsibility to get over that shit.

Bullshit. Not everyone is a bold, dominant person who has the stamina to go out and wreck shit, and that's FINE. Not everyone NEEDS to be that way. That's why we have wish-fulfillment/power fantasy fiction, so that people can get the vicarious thrill of the adventures without having to do things they might not be suited or comfortable with. And no one "has a responsibility" to completely change who they are because patriarchy. 1/10 trolling, radfem troll.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No. That's why guys have wish-fulfillment/power fantasies. We have it in ourselves to be our own power fantasies, but fucking assholes in the media are robbing that from us and selling it back to us with an unhealthy side order of objectification so that men can also buy it from us and it leaves us all reduced each and every time this happens.

I am neither Trolling nor being a radfem. I am fucking angry and I have that fucking right.

What total rot. Not everyone is a rocket scientist or an olympic athlete. And that is okay. Patriarchy has jack all to do with it

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
A woman having and acting upon her agency, which is what we're talking about here, should not be considered rocket science.

I'm a feminist. I've been a feminist for a long time now. And what you're saying is fucked up.

That is all.

I think my love for butt-kicking women is a similar kind of wish-fulfillment thing too. Not that I'm particularly passive, I could just never kick butt the way they do and it'd be kinda neat if I could. Plus it looks cool.

I am definitely not a Strong Female Character and this sometimes makes me love those characters more and sometimes makes me resent them.

Power fantasies are totally a thing and that's cool. You should check out the Kate Daniels series of novels if you're into that---they're my favorite female power fantasy books.

It's a bit of both for me, I think. I like seeing women kick ass in media because men have been kicking ass in media forever and we just don't see it as often with women. (Though it is becoming increasingly more regular.) It makes me feel good to see my gender represented in that way. (Even if a lot of the time it's ridiculous; most actiony characters do have impossible talent and abilities, no matter their gender. However, I'm generally okay with that.)

Plus, yea, like you, I'm not exactly a tough or daring person. (Mostly I'm quiet and scared of making a fool of myself or pissing someone off. Sigh.) I look up to and respect characters who are brave and decisive and who are competent as fuck and have fun doing what they do. Sometimes that's exactly what I want out of media.

(Mostly I'm quiet and scared of making a fool of myself or pissing someone off. Sigh.)

This is me, too. I'm very much all about keeping the peace and not making people upset. And I usually stay quiet until I feel truly comfortable around them.

There's nothing wrong with being a peacekeeper sort in stressful situations, of course. Just...sometimes circumstances do call for someone calling a jerk out on their crap, and some people are way better at doing that than me. They always know the right thing to come back with, and I might think of a clever, snarky remark...days after the event :p.

And then I'm not a very physically strong person, either. So I definitely identify with the OP, too.

Both those descriptions fit me pretty well too.

To make matters even more awkward, my desire not to rock the boat once caused me to rock the boat. A teacher of mine in college called me out on being too...I guess the word would be "haughty" in class discussions. But what she saw as me making a statement and then leaning back in my seat as if the matter was closed was actually me tentatively offering an opinion and then physically moving away from the discussion to open the floor up to other people. That critique surprised me greatly, I can tell you.

And I usually stay quiet until I feel truly comfortable around them.

Exactly! Once I'm comfortable with someone I can speak my mind more easily, but I struggle with people I barely know or don't like.

Just...sometimes circumstances do call for someone calling a jerk out on their crap, and some people are way better at doing that than me.

Same. I'll do it when I feel it's necessary, but I feel like other people are probably more...efficient about it.

And then I'm not a very physically strong person, either.

I have trouble opening jars so I feel you on that one.

This is an awesome cross-section of different types of tough ladies, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
wish fulfillment is a reason behind some fictional characters being written

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I can relate. I love not just strong women, but female villains and straight up mean girls in fiction as well. I love that they have the guts to fuck up and destroy and dominate other people to get what they want. I could never hurt a fly myself so I guess that's a power fantasy of sorts.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"the guts to fuck up and destroy and dominate other people to get what they want."

The guts to fuck and destroy people? Lol you're kidding right?

That sounds like bratty shit behavior. If you value assholes for having guts there's something wrong with your values, tbh.

And you're projecting way too much there, nonny.

I like a good villain, female villain, that can do that shit, too.

I get this. I don't think I admire the actual meanness of mean female characters, myself, but I do admire their ability to be mean/ruthless. Ultimately, I would admire them more if they chose to be kind instead. But there is real value in having the capacity for unkind traits like selfishness and insensitivity and bluntness and calculation, and perhaps even, occasionally, cruelty.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know where the last character is from, but it's kind of sad that I have to be surprised and pleased that an anthropomorphic animal female character doesn't have boobs stuck on.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts precisely. Woe.

It's the female Puss in Boots, from the Shrek side movie (about Puss in Boots.)
