Isn't Disney planning to make a movie about two princes? I'm not saying this ship will happen, but I also don't buy the "Disney would never do that".

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The two prince movie thing was a hoax the last time I heard (unless the hoax was also a hoax)

Are they? I don't follow movie news so I haven't heard anything about this. Is there anything conclusive or just rumors?

Well someone else just said it was a hoax so now I'm just confused.

Eh, let's put it this way:

"Disney won't do that for a long, long time."

The most explicitly gay character they've ever had is Pleakley from Lilo and Stitch. Over the course of the first movie, the subsequent movie, the TV series and the final "made for TV" movie, he and Jumba went from reluctant partners to best friends to a de-facto "aunt and uncle" for Lilo, and Pleakley had an episode that was a blatant allegory for coming out as gay to his parents, in which he's afraid to admit that he doesn't want to get married to some girl from back home and that he likes wearing earth women's clothing. He also nearly gets married to Jumba as part of the farce, who for his part seems pretty damn nonplussed about the whole thing, even griping at one point when the wedding is interrupted.

But still, even though Pleakley is gay-coded so goddamn hard it hurts, Disney still has an issue with pulling the trigger and calling it what it is, or showing romance between human (or humanoid) men or women.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot about Pleakley! Yeah, agree with you there.

The original show really pushed the bromance between Corey and Shawn though. Topanga actually said that she knew Corey loved Shawn more than her. They're still doing it even in the new show.

Actually they had a little kid with two moms in one of their live action shows

Live action Disney channel series Good Luck Charlie a pair of lesbian mothers, and ABC family, which is owned by Disney, is one of the most lgbtqia friendly networks on tv.

I wouldn't totally outrule it.

There's also Ryan in High School Musical (at least 1 and 2). I heard a rummor that he was going to have a photo of Zac Effron in his locker for 3, but Disney nixed that one. But as far as I remember, everyone involved agreed he was gay.

i can't wait for Disney's adaptation of the popular music video "two princes" by 1990s stars Spin Doctors

I think they're more meant to represent the kinds of friendships teen girls have. A lot of them do hug and act like "partners" in a lot of ways. I had a best friend who hugged me all the time and always said she loved me. Actually, she was pretty much the Maya to my Riley.

... or maybe she was bisexual and I missed it. I have wondered that, I'll admit. And I can just as easily see Riley and Maya in a relationship, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I ship it too, but I'm still kind of half holding my breath for them to at least talk about gay issues. Since it takes place in Greenwich Village and they explore other topical issues.

Then again I wouldn't want the only gay character(s) to show up for just one special episode.

Ah screw it, I am right there with you OP. They are adorable. ♥

There was also an episode where Auggie said "They're gonna marry each other!" iirc

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping they'll move the show to a different network like they did with the original. Assuming the show goes into their high school and college years. Here's hoping!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
You are supposed to ship it, but they won't tell you out loud, ever.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You think they're doing it on purpose?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
They are experts, even.

"if we weren't supposed to ship it, why would they..."

Ship whatever you like, but unless it becomes a reality, I wouldn't assume a thing about the writers' intentions.

anon is just analyzing subtext, a thing that literary critics have been doing for centuries

The two girls from the Avatar show got together. Things are changing right now and while Disney's behind the curve generally, they might surprise you.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but with Legend of Korra they got together literally the last minute of the series finale, plus the writers waited a long time to work up the courage to ask the network permission.

They used the same lines for Maya and Riley because Maya and Riley are Shawn and Corey, not Topanga and Corey. And just like Shawn and Corey act and speak in ways that would come across as romantic for any other two people, so do Maya and Riley. That's been driven home time and again throughout the last two seasons.

It's about showing that the kind of love they share is just as deep and important, even if it's a different kind of love.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you're saying but I'm confused about the first line. If the intention is to show that Maya and Riley are Corey and Shawn, why would they have them replicating a conversation between Corey and Topanga?
