Re: Ask/Advice Thread

I want to lose 20 pounds in two months (I will still be in completely healthy parameters for my height). I don't care if I gain it back afterwards, but what is the best way to do this?

Re: Ask/Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Cut out sugars and any drinks that have calories in them. Cut out breads/pastas/processed foods. Basically eat just meat and vegetables, and get some exercise. I can't guarantee 20 pounds, but you will 100% absolutely lose weight.

Walk a lot, eat mostly vegetables, with only small amounts of protein and carbs. Stop eating sugar and empty carbohydrates. Actually, probably just stopping eating sugar would do a lot. Also drink water.

Cut a thousand calories a day without impacting your activity levels.

Or go research how fighters make weight.

Look up "if it fits your macros" and then work out.

Re: Ask/Advice Thread

That doesn't sound terribly healthy, but as long as you're sure your body can handle that sort of yo yo dieting and you don't care if the weight comes back, then it's probably possible. Cut out all refined carbs and sugar. No artificial sweeteners, either. You'll need to eat a lot of vegetables (corn, potatoes and carrots do not count and should be treated as a carbohydrate). Look into lean proteins like chicken breast, lean pork, tofu, beans and legumes. Also look into "green" smoothies for at least one meal per day, breakfast is usually most peoples' pick. You're probably going to be hungry, like, a LOT, so I hope you can deal with that.

Start exercising daily for at least half an hour. More if you can do it. Walking is fine to start, but you can do something more strenuous if you feel up to it.

Atkins/keto. It's hard to keep up long time, but two months should be fine. Do be diligent about following it, though.

Re: Ask/Advice Thread

This could be easier or harder depending on your existing diet and exercise routine. If you don't exercise, start. If you drink soda, sugary coffee or tea, dairy, fruit juice, stop. Drink water and unsweetened coffee or tea or herb tea for 2 months. Eat mostly veggies and fruit with beans and whole grains for protein. Maybe some eggs or lean meat. If you munch mindlessly, eat baby carrots or snap peas or something. Try and eat so you feel fuller longer, whole grains and beans help with that, if you live in the northern hemisphere and it's cold where you are, soups and stews are good for that. Good luck and don't starve yourself, it makes keeping to your goals harder, is harder on your body, and makes it easier to gain weight back.

Also, if you're normal weight for your height or only slightly overweight, 20 pounds becomes harder to lose. The taller and heavier you are to start with, the less freaked out your body will be by losing weight.

Depends where you started. If you're in a healthy weight range at present, it's going to be very difficult without going to extreme measures (including dehydration). If you're very overweight, it isn't an unrealistic goal at all. Eat about half what you do normally and maintain your current activity level.

all these people talking about it depending upon what weight you are

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
she says right in her first sentence that losing twenty pounds would still have her in a healthy weight range. Unless she's nine feet tall your input on how it depends is useless

Uber vs Lyft

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
My trip is quickly approaching and I was wondering if anyone had experiences with Uber and Lyft.

1) How did you enjoy the service?
2) How do passengers work? My sister and I are going to the same location, do we pay extra because there are two of us?
3) How likely is it that we can get an Uber/Lyft at 4am on a Friday night in DC?

Re: Uber vs Lyft

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well I haven used Lyft but I've used Uber to go clubbing before so

1. Yes, they were timely and quick, I live in a college town so my drivers have always been students and they were polite and everything went fine
2. Me and my girlfriend took the same Uber, we were just charged per milage
3. I would guess likely? I got one at 2-3am in my town, which isn't as big as DC

Best thing for cramps besides NSAIDs?

On account of stomach issues I can't take ibuprofin right now (and naproxen doesn't work for me anyway). And of course this is when my body decides that what I really need is bad cramps.

I already know tilenol doesn't do much. Would asprin work?

Midol. Seriously. It's the only thing that gets me out of the fetal position.

If you need help without a pill, warm compresses I find are helpful.

Or if you're of drinking age, put a little alcohol in some tea.

If you have stomach issues that are exacerbated by NSAIDs, aspirin may not be a good idea, since it can cause ulcers and bleeding because it's a blood thinner. Hot water bottle or hot bath? Muscle relaxants from your doctor if you've got one? IDK, but good luck.

Ginger tea and a heating pad.

I get cramps bad enough to make me throw up. I find a heating pad/hot water bottle on my lower back can work well, even without taking any pain killers. Or even a very hot bath.

Hot baths and orgasms.

a heating pad or hot water bottle. I've started to get them so bad that I need heat PLUS ibuprofin, just one or the other alone won't work. so if you can't do the nsaid, then try the heat.

(hot water bottles can be messy yeah but at least they allow you to move around...but if you're going to be confined to a bed or couch anyway, the electric heating pad is god's gift to humankind)

How do I act like I know what I'm talking about/not be talked down to by the salesperson while shopping for a new computer?

Re: Ask/Advice Thread

Know what you're looking for and stick to it, makes it harder to sell you expensive crap you'll never use. What's the hard limit in your price range? Do you rely on easy portability (a laptop) or would you be happy doing most of your computing at home (a desktop)? If you spend almost all of your time browsing online (like my mom does), you don't need anything fancy or pricey. But if you want to do stuff like high-end gaming, or lots of video/photo editing, you'll need a lot of space, a strong processor, and discrete video card, and it'll cost more. That sort of thing. Also make sure to know the terms of the return policy of whatever you buy.

Re: Ask/Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you've done your research and know what you want, simply say so to the salesperson. But I should warn you that if the salesperson is a computer geek themselves, they're going to know you're not an expert, because an expert would be building their own computer from separate components, not seeking to buy one off the shelf.
