Dozens have weighed in on this, but let's make it one more.

First off, OP, I'm really sorry about what happened to you. It goes without saying that rape is a life-changing trauma that is nigh impossible to understand to those who haven't suffered it, and no one deserves it. However, I think you're misdirecting your anger at the experience towards something completely innocuous. It's difficult not to become totally emotional about the subject, but you do get a choice to read fanfiction or not, and every noncon / dubcon / etc. type fic I've seen has been clearly labeled with a warning. No one is doing any real raping on the internet, because it's just words. You are not a prisoner of those words. However, I think you're channeling your anger at the powerlessness over your rape towards your powerless to change the way others think and write. There are ways to deal with that anger, some healthier than others. It's your journey to find out how you cope, but I hope you won't spend too much of your energy on anger towards the internet. It probably won't help you address the issues at the heart of the anger.

That being said, a majority of the people I know who are into it, write it, enjoy it have been sexually abused in some way. I'm not saying that's a majority of the fans, it's just my personal experience. So how would you say "we should experience it?" What if we already had? Sexual abuse does funny things to a person's sexuality, and I think that a lot of people play through it because that way they can experience that loss of control, but actually still be in control of the scenario. They want to rewrite history, so to speak. Maybe it is sick, I can acknowledge that it's certainly taboo, and certainly not something I would wish on anyone IRL. However, the internet's always been a long-term home of people getting those demons out. It may not be pretty. It may not be erotic. It may be shameful and it may be disgusting, but in the end, I don't think it hurts anyone. If it does, it's no one outside the viewers and the writers of those story, and you're not obligated to be either.

I agree with this. I know a girl who is into domination and abuse when it comes to sex, and she was raped and molested when she was young. I'm not saying there's something completely wrong with her, but it makes the point that there may be a connection between the events and the fetish.

I agree; it seems when someone posts a prompt that screams trouble, the results are surprising. The one that got me was the Nazi AU (http://teagueful.livejournal.com/17966.html?thread=3431214#t3431214). Not as amazing as the anorexia response, but still a remarkably good response to a prompt that was sending out danger signals.

The best part about him is what a sweet person he is to his fans IRL. I met him briefly while I was working a film festival in college, and he was by far the nicest, most normal person there.

My favorite moment was when a girl asked him to sign her Spaceballs DVD -- and he not only did it, he had a little geek-out over how cool it was that people still love that movie.

I was checking out the new category on the Pit and I'm really sad how much of that kind of crap is in there. I mean; what hell movie/show were you watching? Then there's the people who write fics about before Benjamin was arrested with Lovett as a little kid. WTF? Dude, if anything, she's older than him, she was their landlady for fucks sake.

*sigh* The only thing I really resent the movie for is trying to make Mrs Lovett more sympathetic. She's a sociopath people, the closest thing to pure evil in the show; stop making her warm and fuzzy or a martyr. FAIL.

Like other people have said, it depends on what you'd consider "worth it." I've gone for the past three years (this last one was worse than the previous two, new location was lame) and I always have fun. It's kind of cathartic. I don't know about other people, but I don't really have a lot of IRL friends who are into yaoi, and yaoicon is a fun place to connect with other fans and talk freely about pairings or whatever with people interested in the same stuff. There's usually a good selection of manga and things, and except this year there's been a good batch of djs...

Anyway. I recommend it, but not if you're used to and enjoy huge cons with a ton of variety in the dealers room.
