Mad Max got nominated for so many things! It has almost no chance of winning Best Picture, but it makes me super happy.

After seeing The Revenant, I will be really displeased if it wins Best Picture. :(

Is The Revenant worth seeing?

Revenant isn't very good. I'm sad it won the Golden Globe and I will be sad if it wins the Oscar.

I've only heard of 3/8 of the best film nominees. Either I'm out of touch or they're nominating some weird stuff this year.

I heard 0 buzz for Bridge of Spies as an Oscar contender, so that's surprising.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
'Room' was a tiny little picture so I don't think most people have heard of it outside awards season. Ditto for Brooklyn. And I think with Revenant it's mostly been the hype around DiCaprio's performance.

But The Martian was huge, Mad Max was huge, Bridge of Spies was pretty well-promoted, and I feel like Brooklyn, Spotlight, and The Big Short have been fairly well-promoted and visible for the kind of Oscarbait drama that they are. So idk.

I don't care about the Oscars. Hollywood's been a rotting corpse for years. And the things I'm mildly interested in won't get actually be watched by the people voting.

Re: Oscar Nominations

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I need to watch Carol. That is all.

Yawn.

Only thing of interest is Fury Road. I need to check out Brooklyn.

Jennifer Jason Leigh seriously got nominated for The Hateful Eight? What the actual fuck. All she did was grunt every once in a while and sing a song.

Re: Oscar Nominations

SA

AND the Hateful Eight got nominated for cinematography? For fuck's sake. If that POS movie wasn't from Quentin Tarantino, no one would have watched it.

I'm really glad Mad Max got nominated for a bunch of stuff. I'd love it to win Best Picture and Miller Best Director, but mostly I care about Margaret Sixel winning for editing.

Ex Machina should win for visual effects.

Kinda cheekily glad that Star Wars didn't get many nominations. The butthurt on some of the blogs I visit is SO STRONG.

I was glad to see Star Wars got nominated for its score, even though John Williams probably has many of those little trophies already - but now I am a bit torn as I also love Ennio Morricone. Haven't heard the score for that film yet, but I'll have to check it out.

I feel like elaborating today;

BP:
I keep getting Spotlight and The Big Short confused for one another, which isn't a testament to how Oscar-baity and interchangeable they are, but it's not good. Their subject matter interests me, but not enough to watch. (An alternative to Spotlight is Calvary, by the way). I have no reason not to, but The Martian annoys me (I'm still not past Scott's comments about the whole Exodus debacle), I'm positive for Room, Brooklyn is a surprise but I'm proud, Revenant is whatever, hooray for Fury Road.

Actors;
I feel like Damon should have been left out and the little boy from Room put in. Or maybe he should be in supporting.

Supporting;
Apparently a lot of these were just not worthy of a nom. I don't know, I only saw Creed, and that's great Stallone got a nom...less great that nothing else from the movie got one, specifically Coogler.

Animated film is just another win for Pixar. The Academy treats the category like shit and just vote disney (with the exception of, what, Rango, five years ago). Still rooting for Shaun the Sheep.

Cinematography is gonna be hard, as is costuming. The technical awards are the ones to watch this year.

I like the layout of that web page, showing the nominations, and also giving me links to film trailers. If they've done that in past years, I missed it, but it's a nice touch, and a good way to find out which of the films I haven't yet seen might pique my interest.

I know Mad Max won't get best picture, but I'm glad it was nominated, and I'm hoping it sweeps the technical categories! It really deserves them.

Goddammit I gotta watch Carol! And all of the docs.

Wish there were more for Ex Machina. A lot more.

I want to see Fury Road for editing and effects at least. A superlative job.

Morricone already has an honorary Oscar, but it would be nice for him to get one.

This is one of the years where I'm not grousing about Pixar being the front-runner for animated feature.

Imma say-

crapshoot for best film
actor - Eddie Redmayne
actress - Saoirse Ronan
s. actor - Christian Bale
s. actress - Rooney Mara

costume - Sandy Powell

Honestly, I think they choose the ingenue when it comes to actresses and The Danish Girl is very topical.

Writing's on the Wall as a nominee for Best Original Song is a fucking joke. I don't even think it was the worst Bond song of all time, but it was so bland and boring. Do they think they have some sort of obligation for "if there is a Bond song you must nominate it"?

I'm a bit torn when it comes to Best Actor - on one hand, I'd really like for Leonardo Di Caprio to finally win one, but I think if there's a better actor, it shouldn't be a matter of "give it to Leo anyway out of pity".

I loved the new Star Wars Soundtrack, but on the other hand, it had a lot of recycled old themes, so I'm not sure it will have a chance. I did love Rey's theme a lot, though.

I think Straight Outta Compton might win Original Screenplay just because they always need to demonstrate how totally not racist they are by throwing scraps to one or two movies.
