That isn't specifically being a dick.

Specifically being a dick is someone going, "I'm going to watch the Sixth Sense today! I've never seen it but I hear it has a cool twist." And then you go, "BRUCE WILLIS IS A GHOST ALL ALONG!!!!!!"

Otherwise, learn to deal with spoilers.

But it's so easy to make a spoiler tag. Like. So fucking easy. It takes ten seconds and that's only if you type really slow.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
exactly. And I doubt anyone makes a huge spoilery secret like this without even considering that it's a spoiler. making a spoiler warning takes two seconds.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
We should just never talk about movies/shows/books/games. Ever. Because you never know if that one person who doesn't know how Citizen Kane ends is around. Just watch things, and keep that stuff deep inside you.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like your sentence has nothing to do with mine. Are they related at all? How is taking two seconds to warn for spoilers equating to "WELL THEN WE SHOULD NEVER TALK ABOUT ANYTHING EVER" to you?
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Because everything is a spoiler. EVERYTHING. Like, people will actually say stupid shit like, "Acknowledging that a character is not dead at the end of episode ______ is a spoiler!"

So how do you determine what is a 'spoiler'? A spoiler to someone else might not be one for you. So the only way to truly be safe from spoilers is to either A) Never talk about anything you watch B) Post a general spoiler warning.

Something like this would work!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please, determining a spoiler is not difficult and you're being melodramatic. Case puts that warning because it isn't HIS responsibility to mark for spoilers and such. And no one is saying it's against the rules to make a spoilery secret. That really has nothing to do with the conversation though in which it is common courtesy to take two seconds (yes, suuuuch an effort) to mark your damn spoilers.

No. Sure for a movie that just came out, add a spoiler tag. Something from years ago? No. That is your responsibility to avoid spoilers.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
How the fuck can one avoid a spoiler for EVERYTHING? It's one thing to not go on a specific forum or read fanfic within a certain fandom, but your suggestion is dumb and unreasonable since this place is multi-fandom.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
You avoid it by not going on the internet if you are that worried about being spoiled for something that happened years ago. :D

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
You're being a total jerk about this, tbh. Just because you don't care about spoilers doesn't mean that no one else should.

I agree that it's really easy to 1) know when something is a major spoiler, and 2) at least state the fandom at the beginning of your comment so people can skip it straight away, instead of explicitly talking about the spoiler first, with people only realizing it's a spoiler after they've already read it.

Why is it so important for you that you avoid spoilers for EVERYTHING? I honestly don't get this. For new stuff, absolutely, because not everybody has the chance to see something first thing and should get the chance to experience it unspoiled, but for things that are years old? Like the secret, which is apparently something that happened in 2009? You had over six years in which you could have seen the show. You had six years in which you could have been spoiled for the show without even giving a damn, because you weren't watching the show a the time. But you were accidentally spoiled now and it's a big enough deal to fly in a rage over?

And for an anecdote: I've never seen Sixth Sense, but I know that Bruce Willis Is A Ghost. One of the best movie plot twists ever, apparently, so great that it became long-lasting meme, and I'll never experience it because I've been spoiled for it. Does it suck? Sure. But I don't see why I should rage about the fact that I've been spoiled for a movie that came out in 1999.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Conversely, why is it so important for you to spoil everything? It's not really your business why someone hasn't seen a particular show yet. It could be absolutely any reason. Doesn't change the fact that a spoiler warning takes nearly zero effort on your part.

The show has been over for years. That event happened years ago. Why does the spoiler warning that Case put on the top not suffice? You know there are likely to be spoilers on this forum.

Do people who are so terrified of spoilers not go anywhere on the internet because they might get spoiled?

Why does the spoiler warning that Case put on the top not suffice?

An anon explained, multiple times, what this is for, and it's not fair to expect people to just avoid F!S entirely because others don't feel like taking three seconds to mark major character death spoilers.

Do people who are so terrified of spoilers not go anywhere on the internet because they might get spoiled?

This is what you seem to think people should do...

And you still didn't address the entire point of my original comment up there, which is that making a spoiler tag is EASY. Like painfully easy. It takes seconds. I don't understand why people are so vehement about wanting to not do it. It's an amount of effort so small as to be entirely inconsequential to anyone who has the time and resources to be browsing Fandom!Secrets.

You do realize that a lot of people wouldn't even consider that to be a spoiler because the show ended so long ago, right? They probably didn't tag it because they didn't think anyone would care about a show that's been off the air for a few years now.

It is so stupid. The entire Spoiler Culture. For like...4 weeks after a movie comes out? Sure, warn for spoilers. But years after a movie or show has ended? Get out of here.
sarillia: (Default)

[personal profile] sarillia 2016-01-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that people get way too dramatic about spoilers sometimes, but I don't quite get the point of the time limit that people put on spoiler warnings. People talk about it like it's common sense but I just realized that I don't actually know the reasoning behind it.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-20 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Use common sense, I guess. If a movie/show/book/game has been out for a year, then it is on you to protect yourself from spoilers.

People have tried to make universally acknowledged times. Usually like a two weeks post new episode. A month for a new movie.
sarillia: (Default)

[personal profile] sarillia 2016-01-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
You haven't answered my question. What's the reasoning behind there being a time limit at all?

I'm not even arguing that there shouldn't be (I don't care about spoilers at all; tell me every twist in every movie I ever see from now on and I wouldn't care), I just don't know why people act like it should be a given.

Agreed so hard. My personal statute of limitations on spoilers is one year. After a year, I figure that the people who really wanted to see/read/play the canon have already done so, and I'm going to stop warning for spoilers.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently spoilers have no limitation. Spoilers are spoilers forever.
