Fandom can be random in it's ships sometimes, and sometimes fandom prefers hate ships to friend ships.

I never shipped them, but I didn't really ship anyone in Burn Notice. I thought Fi and Michael had great chemistry but I agree that the back and forth was sometimes tiresome. Normally that kind of back and forth can make me drop a series but Burn Notice had a good enough cast to keep me there.

I think you're really discounting why they prefer "hate ships" in this context, and it's because the hate ship involved a young, pretty/handsome white man. You're basically dead to fandom if you're not white, young, handsome and cis. Bruce Campbell's character wasn't 'pretty' enough to appeal to the shippers.

Personally I think that's kind of messed up and, as OP says, "shallow". When it gets to the point where you're shipping a character with a dude he hates just because the guy is younger/hotter? That doesn't sit well with me, at all. :/ Like for every time I see people squawk "it's about the DYNAMIC I need SUBTEXT to ship [insert ship here]", they prove themselves as talking out of both sides of their mouth.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I understand what you're saying but I've been in enough fandoms that ship old white man that I wouldn't necessarily say shallowness is the only reason.

(Plus god I find Bruce Campbell so attractive, even with the extra weight.)

I tend to think slash fandom is a bit more racist then ageist (I see way more ugly white men ships then mixed race ships), so when a ship between two white men doesn't happen I can buy that not everyone is necessarily doing it for shallow reasons.

people who prefer hate ships gonna ship it across the fandoms no matter the context.

-white, young, handsome and cis-
the only thing Bruce Campbell's not is being young. So he's not very dear to sjws anyway.

I agree that shallow ships are tiresome but I wish people would shut the hell up with their presumptions about WHY people ship who they ship. Just because a character is uninteresting to you does not mean EVERYONE is uninterested in them. Just because a character is conventionally attractive doesn't mean you're attracted to them. Just because you can't see the appeal of a certain dynamic doesn't mean that you can discount that such an appeal does not exist in the minds of those who prefer it.

I ship them--wasn't in the fandom though. While I loved Fiona, I thought Sam and Michael were better suited for each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I think Campbell is way better looking than the fugly guy who played Michael

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't think the guy who played Michael is ugly, but Bruce Campbell is much more agreeably attractive to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've always found Bruce Campbell appealing, even when older.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'n with you. I don't necessarily think Michael is fugly but not at all my type and I find Campbell +5000 percent hotter.

The years have certainly been kind to Bruce, I'll say that much.

Have never watched the show, don't find the other guy ugly, but I definitely find Bruce in this photo smoking hot and much more my type than the other dude.

But Sam used to inform on him to the FBI!

OK, actually, you know what? Why even argue with a slashie about Michael and Sam's relationship, or Michael and Fi's?

I see your points. They're good points. But it's still a show about straight men.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
NA

But Sam used to inform on him to the FBI!

Lol I have a feeling you didn't catch the nuances of that very well, did you? Michael knew this and condoned it, and Sam spoon-fed the FBI half-truths and bogus crap, his friendship with Michael always came first, that was a huge part of their relationship throughout the series.

OK, actually, you know what? Why even argue with a slashie about Michael and Sam's relationship, or Michael and Fi's?

Ummmmm....what? What even is this comment? I can't even begin what you're trying to say beyond it seeming like you're not-so-subtly putting down people who enjoy slash, and then saying people can't comment about Michael and Fiona's relationship because...reasons?

I see your points. They're good points. But it's still a show about straight men.

Again, what? So like basically every other show with a large slash fandom following ever, right? That doesn't mean OP's points aren't valid, and I have no idea what you're trying to say with "it's about straight men!", like no shit? (Although that's pretty heteronormative, straight is not the default, and one or both men could easily be bisexual in canon.) We can still talk abut problems in fandom surrounding shipping, because....you know....we're on Fandom Secrets, and that's kind of what we do, talk about fandom shit.

I know, OK? I know.

Michael and Sam were good friends. Almost like brothers. They're shippable. But you are not entitled to have other people ship what you ship.

You complain that fans who slashify this very straight show don't ship the obvious pair of close buddies at the middle of the show? Why? The text of the show is incredibly straight. They're heterosexual best friends. Canon is not on your side.

Since it's all reinventing the premises anyway, if slashers will ship two guys who fit the slasher's physical type, well, that's what slash is for! It's usually not about representation, and it's not really about an expanded interpretation of canon; it's mostly about lust and kink.

I can't watch the show for the reasons you gave about Fiona. :/ It makes me feel shitty, but I'm too grossed out by the fact that they cast a woman with stick arms / legs to portray an action-y lady YET AGAIN, and I haven't been able to get past that to actually get to liking any of the characters.

If I try to mention this, I just look like a bad person, but it's not something I can get over, and frankly, I don't see why I should always have to "get over" stuff like this.

I noped out of the show.

Honestly this secret made me so selfishly happy because that was one of the biggest things that bothered me about this show!

These aren't even her at her worst (she got SO THIN for so much of Burn Notice) but she's painful to look at to be honest.

I feel like they should have cast a much more buff, athletic actress if they wanted to portray a true "action spy lady", which they definitely portrayed Fiona as. I'm thinking like Jessica Biel (http://i0.wp.com/www.healthfitnessrevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/jessica-biel1.jpg?resize=750%2C520 The abs!), Lucy Liu, Halle Berry, all women who have gotten into extremely athletic shape for action roles.

I'm so tired of tough, capable women being portrayed by actresses who look like they've never seen a burger before. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
ASGILIJSH:;hj JESSICA BIEL!!

I would so binge watch if she was the character. <3 Perfect example of strong and beautiful actress.

(And I have nothing against the actress in question, BTW. Just for that part.)

I agree that she was too skinny for my tastes a lot of the time. (I really don't like seeing her ribs like that in the bathing suit picture, for example.) Was she really supposed to be truly "actiony," though? I thought most of her work involved cons or guns. She wasn't Wonder Woman or Natasha Romanoff.

I agree with this. Very thin people are hard to watch in action roles because it's both unconvincing and looks like they're going to break apart.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, so much. I tend to end up feeling like they were cast to conform to some casting director's porn fantasies and portray the idea that "ALL WOMEN LOOK THIS WAY WHAT DO YOU MEAN they have different body types??"

I'm very cynical. ;)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I like the actress a lot and that helped me get through the show, but I agree that she was too skinny and had a bit too much work done to the point that it could be distracting.

I don't blame her since being that skinny is very supported/the norm for Hollywood actresses, but I wish she could have been a bit more bulky, not even considerably, just enough to feel like a fit spy.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
She would be wonderful in so many other roles. But I do wonder if she's healthy. It unnerves me seeing actress ribs so prominently.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
How can you not love Bruce Campbell? (I'm middle aged and Evil Dead fan, though).
