I hate how in certain fandoms it has become unacceptable to say anything negative about a female character without typing up a ten-paragraph justification. If I want to express dislike of a male character I can just say "I don't like Leo Fitz" and leave it at that and no one will give a shit, but I can't say "I don't like Peggy Carter" without adding "BUT IT'S TOTALLY NOT BECAUSE SHE'S A WOMAN, I LOVE NATASHA AND GAMORA AND PEPPER, AND IT'S NOT BECAUSE SHE 'GETS IN THE WAY' OF STONY OR STUCKY, BECAUSE I DON'T EVEN SHIP THOSE LOL."

I understand that this phenomenon is a result of backlash against how female characters are constantly bashed and accused of being Mary Sues for the stupidest reasons, but it's still ridiculous. No one should have to "prove" they aren't a misogynist to be "allowed" to dislike a fucking fictional character.

She's gorgeous, stunning. I love her as Peggy Carter. I think it's fantastic the movie spawned the series for her.

PS. Long live Stucky.

At least you put "allowed" in quotes instead of just using it! I guess you get points for that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Tangentially related: Why do people on this comm get so offended by the usage of "scare quotes" (lol see what I did there)?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Context is always going to be what its going to be, honestly. So deal w it I guess.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Long justifications still get picked apart and analyzed for loopholes that you need to explain, and then your explanations get the same treatment ad nauseum. I've gone back to just saying "I don't like her" because the result's the same either way lmao.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, me too.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Fans in general have a horrible habit of assuming the absolute worst about someone simply disliking their favourite character/pairing. I guess pretending anyone who disagrees is some kind of evil strawman makes them feel more validated?

I agree 100%. It's not that I don't get why--I'm predominantly a slash shipper so I'm all too aware of how female characters get treated by fans, especially when said female "gets in the way" of the ship. But it gets ridiculous sometimes. I shouldn't have to justify/defend my likes and dislikes to anyone.

For example, take Guinevere from Merlin. I just not fond of her. The one time I admitted it out loud I got so much shit for it, especially when I admitted to being a Merthur fan. Like, no, that had nothing to do with it because I also shipped Merlin/Morgana and Arthur/Morgause. And then, of course, it came down to me being racist since I disliked the only prominent POC character in the series. You'd think that, by telling them I was a POC myself, they'd back off, but nope. It was one thing after another.

Fuck, I'm getting pissed off just thinking about it.

I solved this by exclusively hanging out in slash corners.

But I think that people are looking for an echo chamber of warm feelings, gushing and you-go-girl sentiments rather than letting everyone express their negative opinions on everything. Don't know if it can be stopped or if we should even try to stop it. Maybe in a few years writing for lead female characters will have improved, and fandom will see the flaws in some of their former goddesses.

Actually, I am irrationally annoyed by people who talk about the male characters they don't like, either.

It's just...negativity annoys the shit out of me. It's like going to a fashion discussion forum and reading posts about how someone thinks skinnny jeans or flares are ugly. I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING. WHAT DO YOU LIKE...that's much more interesting.

In short, haters are irksome.

Tbh, in the MCU fandom's case, I've seen a loooooooot of people who openly stated that they hated Peggy and/or Sharon because they got in the way of steve/bucky.
I mean really, were you there when the first Cap 2 trailer premiered? Sharon only got like five seconds of screentime and there were already hate tags dedicated solely to her.
Lmao and don't get me started on Natasha's haters
I can't say the same for every fandom, and I'm not saying they're in the right, but I can see where the people you're complainig about in your secret are coming from.

I'm so with you on this, OP. Fandom's kind of in a sad state. :( And of course, if you dislike a woman who happens to be black, then you're apparently both misogynistic and racist.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2016-02-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, let's see here. I don't like:

Temperance Brennan (written plot-stupid)
Robyn (Jessica Jones, over-used crazy)
Lt. Connix (pointless cameo)
Madame Danglars (we're supposed to dislike her)
Two (inconsistent writing on the love triangle)
Jordan (that Woody thing just dragged on)

To me there's a huge difference between disliking a character and hating one with such force that it can come off as a bit terrifying, but tbh I'll only ever feel the latter could be a problem if someone always gets that way about female characters, and only female characters as well. Otherwise I'll just think they're not a fan, and that's fine.

(Not that it's fun you see your fave get ripped to shreds but I'd just rather not get involved these days, if someone is dead-set against hating a character nothing I say will change their mind so I'll just leave them to it and go focus on things that make me happy instead).

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
In this crowd, it seems like female characters are typically despised anyway.

I think the actress is very pretty, but I can't get into Agent Carter for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
While that is true about most female characters, my current fandom is very protective of all the characters and they are offended if someone doesn't love every one of them like their own son or daughter.

I hate it. There are just some characters I don't like and it's for shallow reasons. I have to keep my mouth shut because I know I'd get shit for having negative opinions about these characters.

For example there is one character who is a snarky asshole and everyone fucking loves him and thinks he's so relatable for being a misanthropic asshole. They think him being rude is HI-LARIOUS. I hate his guts, but if I say anything I'll get the thousand word meta's on why he's a precious cinnamon bun.

I hate this coddling environment of fandom so much. As long as your not bothering fans of the characters, then people should be allowed to vent about characters they dislike. The same goes for shipping.

I understand that people have different taste in characters, and usually I'm fine with that. But when one of my favorite characters was bashed from the moment she was announced, and it continued on and on ad nauseum over some things that I thought were really ridiculous reasons and when the fandom overall is not only very slash heavy but very into male characters over female characters, I automatically started to wonder about everyone who said they disliked that character. Even if they could potentially have had perfectly valid reasons for doing so.

I mean, even now, Rey gets so much flack for being a Mary Sue (and other things, like the person who said that she was violent/abusive because of her first encounter with Finn) but then those people gush about so many of the male characters, who exhibit many of the same characteristics.

Basically, as you said, for me it is all about the backlash. I'm just so fucking tired of years and years of male characters being beloved and female characters being hated often for the same exact behaviors/personality/writing. And a lot of the time people feel the need to tag their hate. I really don't need to see 20 posts saying why people hate a character I like when I'm trying to find art/fic/positive things about this character. I try to look for patterns in what people say, but I admit I side eye people sometimes for disliking certain characters.

I knew someone who was like you.. until her fav female character in one fandom was the one disliked ^

two cents:
point a) There is a difference between disliking a female character, and saying misogynistic things about them and/or having the double standards that current popular fandoms have with women (e.g., bashing them for shit the male characters are liked or getting a pass for, the over scrutinizing and exasperating nitpicking for every female characters in a male dominated fandom..)
If you just dislike a female character without having any agenda, and without saying misogynistic or sexist shit about them, then yes, it is annoying that people make straw man arguments against you and don't really read what you're saying. I feel you. That said, if your argument doesn't have any problematic elements you shouldn't justify yourself, if anything it will just make the fans find your post more suspicious.

point b) Both sides make straw man arguments. Both sides tell their own narrative of what happens in their fandom.
When I read people claiming that in x fandom 'everyone who doesn't like x character or x pair is called misogynistic/homophobic/racist' and therefore people are not 'allowed' to have opinions because of the fans' fault, I know THAT this is, in most cases, an exaggeration too. Let's not pretend that this kind of assertions aren't a straw man argument too that those who dislike the thing make to shut down unwanted opposite opinions and to play the victim card.
I have encountered a lot of people in fandoms who dislike a thing and automatically have a defensive reaction when someone disagrees with them no matter how they disagree and what they say.

TL;dr the fans of the thing gotta understand the difference I pointed up in point a, but the 'haters' of the thing gotta understand the difference between someone saying 'you are not allowed to have an opinion!' and someone just counter-arguing what you said in order to express their opinion (just like you did).
