I've never read one, and probably wouldn't want to, but the concept makes 100% perfect sense to me.

You wouldn't have to alter it very far at all to make it something I'd consume like crack, honestly.

Its the same appeal as historical romances I guess maybe? I'm not sure what's appealing about a woman living in a time or a place where she has few rights and is ruled by her husband when she finally gets married (which is always the goal of these things). But clearly it has some sort of appeal to a lot of people.

Oh, it's easy. It's for readers who want to romanticize Christianity and old-fashioned values (i.e. no gays, no interracial marriages, no premarital sex) in an extremely idyllic rural setting. You know, a simpler, purer time!

Bonus points because there aren't any brown people in it.

Until I read the comments, I thought these were romances written by Amish for Amish and didn't understand where the question lay O_o

We get catalogs of remaindered books (Hey, it's cheaper than hard drugs!), and mostly order nonfiction for research purposes. But this is where I first learned of the Amish/Mennonite/occasionally Mormon romance genre. And I'm kind of fascinated by it. Judging by the blurbs only, they come across much more repetitive in plots/tropes than the other romances.

The Amish that I encounter around town smell too bad to imagine them in any kind of romantic way.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
The Amish I've seen aren't that good looking either.

I never really cared for romance novels, but I do have this thing about corrupting "purity" and all so... brb, Googling those titles.

.... you sneaky fucker, you're the author boosting sales, aren't you?

I'm going to guess it's the "forbidden" aspect.

It's pretty baffling to me too. Though I remember one series I read as teenager that had a Amish boy and a non-Amish girl, so I guess it covered the forbidden romance tropes.

I am not a sociologist or a psychologist, but I suspect it's the stereotypical innocence and unworldliness thing. The Amish are just one of the few populations you can foist that on if you want to set something in the here and now.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much what everyone here has said, but also, fetishizing the Amish is definitely a thing. It's a life most of us couldn't imagine and is therefore "exotic". I can see the appeal but having lived near an Amish community (Maine - yes, they live here too), they're pretty normal and boring. They just maintain their own Christian traditions and rules, wear their traditional plain clothing, and pay for everything in cash. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2016-02-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to imagine that The Shunning is some kind of Amish AU of The Shining.

A fair amount of conservative women like love stories but not explicit sexual content or characters doing anything sexual before marriage, and they know they're not going to find that stuff in Amish or Christian romances, so that's what they read. Books like this are also marketed as "sweet" or "clean." Fans of that sort of thing will get together on Amazon or Goodreads to give each other recs/anti-recs like anybody else, or they'll blindly download obvious erotica or even plain old mainstream romance and write pissy reviews about all the naughty language and loose morals they observed in chapter one alone. Both approaches are great for the authors' sales. lol

I have nothing in particular to comment, I just want to say that the only thing better than Amish romance? GAY Amish romance. It's called "A Forbidden Rumspringa" and it satisfied a craving I didn't even know I had.

My mom likes these!

They're religious, gentle, sweet romance stories. Sometimes she gets annoyed with them if they're not plotted very well, or if the people writing them have obviously done no research.

Many people are interested in the Amish and want to understand more about their lives. Also, there's a large demand for gentle / sweet / religious romances.

I personally think it's a big draw for people to have an escape to a "simpler" life where being a mother and wife is enough, and you don't have to juggle all the things that so many people have to every day.

Of course, life for Amish people isn't always simple or sweet and fun, but I'm sure we've all felt the draw of "a simpler time" without social media, etc. Sort of like historicals, but not.

I didn't even know this was a genre until now. But I guess some people find the Amish way of life appealing so they write stories about it?

I read one occasionally. It's good escapism just like most fiction. I am not a fan of the sex scenes in romance novels so I can enjoy a little romance without heaving chests and manly bulges.

I was book shopping the other day, and I was surprised to see a whole shelf full of these

They are also popular among the Amish, or so our local librarian tells me.

if it's between a non-Amish person and an Amish person, I can see the "forbidden" romance aspect. If it's between two Amish people, I have zero idea. I don't read romance novels, honestly. Do the Amish guys look sexy with six packs, huge biceps, and blinding white teeth when they raise barns or s/t? Do they have sex before being wed and it's ~scandalous~? Maybe it's the purity thing and the desire to be taken, ravaged by someone?

Older conservative Christian women seem to be the key demographic of Amish fiction. I have never read one nor do I plan to, not my cup of tea. At least it isn't 50 Shades?
