I can't say I'm a fan of this series but it's better than people give it credit for. They sound like they're going by what they've heard instead of read or memories from reading it 10 years ago when they didn't pick up on the fact that the seme is supposed to be an asshole and the story spares no scene in portraying him as one. His mocking of the trans woman is portrayed as wrong and him being a dick, all the rape and abuse is portrayed as his inability to form emotional connections with anyone and attempting to do it through physical force, the entire point is to play up how horrible he is so that the uke looks even more good and pure by forgiving him in the end, etc etc. They have stupid domestic scenes that nobody ever talks about because they're too busy gasping in horror.

TL;DR: It's 50 Shades of Gay, decades before 50 Shades of Grey.

I've never read this one because I guessed it wasn't for me from the artwork and the plotline. I love BL manga and a bunch of BL authors, but it's just like everything else - you have some really good titles and a whole lot of crap. What you're describing is really the annoying part of BL as a whole. It also sucks that it's prevalent enough that you can't really say that you're into BL without a disclaimer (like "BL but no stereotypical weepy uke/rapey seme stuff and it's got to be slow burn instead of 'surprise rape is love...'").

Okay, I read a lot of BL/Yaoi doujinshi and the art is usually always gorgeous but every time there is a published BL/Yaoi you get those disgusting proportions and overtly uke/seme appearances.

Why can't they hire those doujinshi artist to draw the stuff that gets published?

Okane Ga Nai was the first yaoi anime I ever watched and I haaaaaaaaated the art. I did develop a huge crush on Ayase though. I thought he was so damn cute and used to daydream about rescuing him from the seme.

I know next to nothing about anime/manga fandoms of any kind, OP, so I can't really speak to that. But I have encountered the same basic tropes you describe plenty of times in several of my live-action TV fandoms, and yeah, I side-eye that shit so hard.

You know, I like femme, subby guys, and yaoi cliches generally turn my crank, so for the longest time I had trouble putting my finger on what I don't like about Ayase... I think it's that he's not just femme, he acts like a child. The childishness is the big turnoff for me. It's like going into shota territory, almost.

Also, dat art. I hate dat art.
