21. I wrote about something very similiar recently in my personal livejournal, in conjunction with how I think people who are really hard into fandom "snark" and "mary sue hunting" are taking things way too seriously and possibly forgetting where they come from. I mean, Mary Sues - even if you didn't start out in *fanfiction* writing them, chances are, as a little kid, you *played* them. I think most kids do this, at least the imaginative ones. I can clearly remember playing with my best childhood friend in our backyards either being the stars of original ongoing narriatives of our own or creating stories based upon movies in which we were married to our favorite male characters. It's something I did as a kid and nothing I think anyone should be ashamed of.

71. I read my own fanfic sometimes. I don't see it as "drinking my own bodily fluids." I see it as a way of seeing how far I've come in the craft. Also, sometimes it's the only way to get "just what I want" in a fanfic. Nya.

21- I worry about people who DIDN'T run around playing games like that as a kid.

1. Be happy that you're able to let loose and be happy :) We should really pity the "normal" people who can't feel the way we do when we get gleefully obsessed with our fandoms. Happiness ♥

I saw a 75-year-old lady cosplaying at AX last year. she was dressed as Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle, and it was brilliant.

I'm going to turn 24 just before I cosplay a 9-year-old boy. my best friend, also a cosplayer, is 26 and still going strong, mostly cosplaying Shonen Jump heroes.

in other words, if you've got the face (read: no wrinkles! XD; ) then you can cosplay whomever you want for a very long time. Even when you get older it's just a matter of finding the appropriate characters. =D

Re: 64

[identity profile] chiyo-no-hikari.livejournal.com 2008-03-06 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. One of the best cosplays I've ever seen was a 60-something woman dressed as Uncle Iroh from Avatar. As long as you work within your general age range, you can cosplay for many years to come!

64. currently fifteen and trying to dabble in cosplay. i feel like i'm.. too young? idk. it's weird. but really, there isn't some sort of age preference. i could see myself at least in my mid-twenties still cosplaying, mainly for fun.

I actually think that statement is ok...you just need to change one tiny little thing:

"Normal people don't think like this. You're a FREAK, and you should be PROUD of it."

You're different from the crowd. That's okay! I, for one, think you're AWESOME for being different. I know I've had moments where I feel like a dork (and not the good kind) for liking stuff so intensely, but I try my best to find the positive in it. I think if our fannish tendencies don't affect our lives in a negative way, we should own them, take pride in them! They make us passionate people; they make us who we are.

TL;DR Version: Be proud of who you are, babe!

OMG, you too? I was watching cable and they had a thingy about the Foo Fighters and I was watching idly until Dave Grohl started talking about the band, and how they were drawn to be together and how awesome they were together and suddenly I was all whoa, slashy.

Re: 77

[identity profile] foofighter0234.livejournal.com 2008-03-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
:D when I went to their concert last week, Dave dropped subtle innuendos about Taylor. I almost DIED.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-03-06 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
8. That Simon icon is the best thing ever and I'd really like it...
Heh, I still remembe thinking more or less just that when we first saw him. Lovely.

9. I'm NewFen. I'm anti-slash. (I certainly hope you mean Donna platonically).
I'm still inclined to agree. (It does fit in the category of "pairing I agree with, but feel no desire to read fic of.") I only wish there were more of the Toughton era left to watch, because I'd watch them in a heartbeat.
And darn it, if people can look at that and not go "Ewwww, he's too old!" then can we please stop having that wank about him and Rose!
Though I'd much rather ship myself with Jamie....Rawr...

19. Oh drat, do you? Have to like one more than the other, I mean? Darn, I'm in trouble. Me, I like the comic where they're both getting angry at the usurper, and end it by macking. They would. Seriously.

21. Yeah, I did that.

62. If it's that particular pairing, I have to say, the internets make us feel as if we should apologize. Constantly. Like we have to acknowledge that it's awful or something before we can be taken seriously as fans. It may just be difficult for her to switch it off.

9.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-06 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I meant platonically. Rest assured. I even meant Jamie platonically. I don't think they did, or would do anything "that way" but I really think they did love each other in some deep way, that wasn't sexual, but very important. (And also, for the record, I don't think Rose/Ten was or would have been sexual either. Just no. Ew. Everyone stop.)

And ditto on the shipping Jamie with self. God that is a nice looking young man. Is it warm in here?

PS: What is NewFen?

Another Aoi House secret! I am a total Alex/Elle shipper (and Sandy Maria). I used to spend a lot of time on the gomanga forums and I must say that the rabid Morgan fans and Alex/Morgan shippers made me hate her. Now that I don't frequent there anymore I don't mind her so much, but I still think she's a total burikko. I think it is the fans on the forum that pushed the whole pastede on Alex/Morgan. Sorry to ramble on with my thoughts on Yaoi House.

63. I have actually been thinking about Terry Pratchett a lot lately. It just makes me so sad beyond words to think about it, but most of the time I am in denial about the Alzheimer...
It's the last thing I want to let this feeling affect the enjoyment of his books, but I don't think I can read a future book of his without crying. :/

13. Welcome to the madhouse :) I don't normally get into tv fandoms - or any fandoms, for that matter - but this one tractored me in too @.@

64. One of the best cosplayers I ever saw was a 70+ old lady who dressed up as old Kaede from Inuyasha. She had the perfect costume, the perfect attitude, and no one cared that she was a grandmother. I think people place way too much emphasis on the YOUNG! CUTE! aspect of cosplayers sometimes. True creativity and skill is what really makes a lot of costumes shine.

(And if you're really uncomfortable showing your body, you can always look into cool costumes that don't show any part of yourself - giant Gundam robot cosplay, Totoro suits, etc. Stuff like that can be super fun in part because no one would normally think of playing them, and you get to build fun stuff! \o/ )

24. :D Sky High! I was sad when Warren ended up with someone who didn't have so much as a name at the end of the movie while everyone else got to keep it in the family. :C LAME!

69. :( He's so great, especially in the earlier seasons. So dorky. So, so dorky. I wish he and his ridiculous hair got more love.

33: OMG! UmJammer Lammy! I miss that game so much! T_____T

49: I was a Phoenix/Edgeworth shipper from the previous three games, but I totally agree with your point in Apollo Justice. Everyone's so adamant on Edgeworth returning on the next game so the two can have TWU LUB, but I just don't see Edgeworth to be too happy about how Phoenix turned out.

53: I kind of actually thought he was right as well, at least with how the law system should work (at least in the game). I mean, the Jurist System was pretty much even more biased than the regular law system was in the game. o_O;

And don't even get me started with the fact that he was imprisoned in the first place with FORGED EVIDENCE. I mean, I know it was Phoenix's way of getting back at him, but I wonder if he failed to realize that he was putting APOLLO in the same position that he was in a few years back. :\

68: You mean that there's people in the fandom that don't worship Klavier as the greatest thing since sliced bread?! I mean, I LIKE the guy (as he's probably my second favorite character in the game, next to Kristoph), but I thought that his fandom was overhyping him by just a bit. But then again, I guess I haven't really explored the full extent of the fandom yet either.

67. I feel that way about Resident Evil.

73. I think that would bother me too. It's fine to ship half of a canon pairing with someone else... just explain why. None of my fandoms do that so I can't think of a good example... I just agree.

21. Actually, you'd be a very well-rounded character, because you wouldn't actually be doing any of those things.

51. ...And here I was, thinking that fandom couldn't possibly add any more depth to his character. Then again, maybe we're just in different corners of fandom, because Tezuka/Fuji!Atobe tends to be deeper than any other character mentioned in fics combined. xD
