Shower issues

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a skin condition that flares up everytime I shower. The only thing that controls it is a two hour long treatment regime of ultra greasy creams. After a full day of work, I'm so tired I can't face it. And showering without the creams is disastrous.

It's stressing me out so much I'm now only showering once a week. It's disgusting.

Anyone got any suggestion s?

Have you tried adjusting the heat of your water? It might be prudent to start taking very lukewarm baths rather than showers if the issue is that the water is drying out your skin.

If that's still too much, consider a "bush shower". Clean your pits and privates with washcloth. If your hair is too greasy to stand, run it under the tap.

Also, there are various shampoos and soaps specifically made for controlling dermatitis/psoriasis that can usually be bought at pharmacies. You may want to look into those.

Unfortunately, I have exhausted literally every type of wash and moisturiser currently available on my continent. I have also tried every temperature of shower. This is a long term problem is hat has recently gotten worse.

Bush showers might be worth a try. Luckily it takes a month for my hair to get visibly greasy.

Well, one last option, have you been to a specialist to talk about prescription cleansing products? Aside from salves and prescription moisturizers, those might also go a long way to keeping your cleaning regimen irritation minimal.

If so, I'm sorry to hear about that, and I would definitely recommend keeping your personal hygiene to methods that use the least amount of water possible. Maybe go for a full shower once a month, and simply use a washcloth to take care of smellier areas daily.

It could be the water. You might try a water filter for the house, or if that's not an option, then a filter for the showerhead itself.

Also, do you use a pouf or washcloth? Are you scrubbing too hard?

Sponge baths?

Can you wash your hair over the side of the tub? That is, if you have a detachable shower head. Or maybe do a sponge bath type so you're not under the spray?

There are dry shampoos that work wonders, but I'm honestly not sure how it would interact with your skin, which would sort of negate the point. :/ Do you know if it's something in your water?

Ugh, that sucks. Could it be your water supply? My city's water is sometimes so highly chlorinated out of the tap that it smells like a public swimming pool and tints my hair green, and if you've got a sensitivity to something specific in the water, it could be that. I'm in the US, but luckily not in Flint, Michigan, which is making the news for having a really nasty water quality problem (lead and other super-toxic chemicals) thanks to corrupt politicians, but apparently there are lots of other mostly poverty-stricken towns where toxic water is a thing. Or it could just be you've developed an intolerance to a common shampoo ingredient. Do you have access to a doctor to rule out stuff like psoriasis or allergies? Maybe try a sponge bath using bottled water and see if that helps. Good luck.

See a dermatologist?

I'm wondering if it might be something in your water. Either a contaminant or just really hard water. Maybe try sponge bathing with bottled water and see if that works?

Have your shower be more of a trickle out of the tap? Only wet parts of body as needed instead of letting it flow all over? Sponge baths?

What kind of skin issue is it?

I have a similar problem. I've found that if I take an antihistamine (like Benadryl) about a half hour before I shower and used an oil based cleanser (not a lot of suds), then the extreme itchiness I get is lessened. I also keep the water as cold as I can tolerate. Also, I was my hair in the sink, so I don't have to spend extra time in the water. Once I get out of the shower, I put on lotion immediately.

I went to a dermatologist years ago and he told me that being itchy after being in the shower (or a tub full of water) was all in my head. He's apparently never felt like he needed to claw his skin off after a bath. I hope you find a regiment that helps!

I'm not sure what advice I can give you because I don't know what aspect of showering causes your flare ups.

I have to moisturise with really thick QV cream after every shower too, and it's exhausting because my POTS is always bad after I shower. I use a shower chair in the shower so I don't pass out. When I get out, I lay my towel over my bed and sit on it to apply my moisturisers, because I have to do my face, then get the medicated one on whatever part of me is flaring first (this week it's my feet) and then I do a layer of the thickest one over my dry patches, then the regular one everywhere else. I know if I half-ass it I'll be in serious discomfort, and yes, some days I don't have the energy to do it at all, so I usually alternate between having proper showers and washing my hair, and running some warm water in the sink and washing my face, pits, bits, and feet. I don't do much during the day, but I find it just feels refreshing to wash and reapply deodorant before I put clean pjs on and hop into bed.

We can't really help having bodies that hate us, and it might take some time to work out a routine that works well for you, but it's important to take care of yourself. If you think the anxiety could be contributing to the problem now, or you need to discuss better management with your dermatologist, it might be a good idea to make those appointments and see this through.

AYRT Thanks for sharing this. It's easy to forget that I'm not alone in dealing with this kind of crap sometimes. None of my friends have health problems, and none of them really understand how I have to budget my energy or the kind of emotional toll it takes.

I hadn't heard of POTS until today but it sounds difficult to manage.

You're welcome! I remember I used to love showers. They were relaxing and I enjoyed them. :/

I don't have many friends with health problems either, and for years I've been doing the whole "oh shit, hide all the sick person stuff!" run around before they come over. I've completely lost the energy to care though. It's very liberating.

POTS is an asshole. I think someone described it like living with an abusive partner. I expend all my energy just trying not to set off a bad episode.

You might try asking for more advice in the chronic fatigue sub in the future:
https://www.reddit.com/r/cfs

There are a few blogs around that are written by some pretty cool people, and they post good tips on how they deal with stuff. I am still finding things that work for me, and I find myself having to constantly adapt things because my symptoms change a lot.

Umm. A few other things I find help, I lay out my clothes and moisturisers on my bed before I shower. I usually pop on the telly and watch something while I moisturise. I get in a sort of autopilot mode while I watch so it feels like it goes faster, and then I'm already on my bed so I can just flop into the sleep position and let it happen when the urge to pass out hits.

I hope you get stuff figured out a bit better soon. Take care of yourself!
