making friends as an adult

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you do it? I guess since I am no longer curved to spend time with people in school, I don't know where to find people.

Clubs! Hobbies! Volunteering!

My mom has made an extraordinary amount of new friends as a 55+ year old woman just by getting into kayaking after my dad died and finding a place to volunteer. If you find something to be into irl, you're going to find like minded people who are into it.

By developing your hobbies and interests, looking at meetup.com, expanding fandom friendships, etc.

Joining local internet forums specifically relating to my hobbies. Clubs if that is an option.

Sickness (gross talk)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-02-20 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my shopping plans were cancelled when I woke up last night spewing everything from my body (from both ends). I have never thrown up so much in my life. Right now I am in bed trying to get comfortable because I now have head and body aches.

Any one have some suggestions for dealing with this beyond pepto and sleep? Been sleeping for life 16 hours so can't do it anymore.

Keep hydrated, even if it's hard to keep down. Gatorade or other electrolyte beverage so you don't put yourself in danger if you keep vomiting/having diarrhea.

Sometimes a suppository of a travel sickness medication is helpful for nausea. Otherwise there's not much to do other than ride it out and hope it's over with quickly.

Bananas, dark chocolate and coca-cola (not at the same time).

Gatorade is my go to. Depending, flat ginger ale is another option. I like to much on saltines or a bowl of bland white rice is good.

Sounds like Noro. :/

Hydration is vital. You can get into real trouble if you don't stay hydrated. Water is better than nothing but you really want a rehydration drink that will restore your electrolytes.

If you're still throwing up then drink orange squash as well. It really improves the flavor when it comes back up.

Hope you feel better soon!

As a nursing friend of mine once said it's like you're trying to throw up your toenails. Been there, done that.

I don't have anything to add advice wise since others have already said it. I do hope you're feeling better sooner rather than later.

Plenty of liquids, and some bland food if you can keep it down. Clear chicken broth is good. Maybe with some ginger simmerered in it for nausea.

Flat ginger ale, tea, crackers, bananas, chicken soup.
What you have sounds perfectly awful. Make sure you have someone to look after you, and I hope you get better soon.

Ack that's the worst,

I'd try drinking some sort of carbonated lemon lime drink or ginger ale for stomach crap. Also for food, simple things like crackers or bread. Nothing dairy probably.

Hope that helps.

I find the electrolyte drinks easier to chug down when they're near freezing. It somehow disguises the weird salty taste of evil. I sometimes keep a pack of mints around just to smell so I don't have to be constantly smelling whatever is currently coming out of me. Yuck.

I hope it passes soon!

Applying for American job

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The online application requests a resume. I have a CV (standard for my country) but I'm worried that a standard American resume is different? What are they asking for, FS?

American resumes typically don't include a photo. Other than that I don't think they're that different.

Re: Applying for American job

North American resumes may not have a cover letter, photo, or personal references included. Usually it's just a list of qualifications, past experience, skills, education, publications, etc.

Specific jobs or positions tend to ask for the personal references, personal statements, photos, or other qualifiers after they have seen the list of qualifications, or if they include it on an application.

That's about it, really.

Re: Applying for American job

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Resumes are shorter. It's the kind of thing where you distill your qualifications and experience down to one, maybe two pages. For example, my long CV has just about every project I've ever worked on that's worth mentioning, every report and article I've ever written, my employment history with explanations of wgat I did for each job, and a lot other details. My resume just lists my education, special training/licenses, employment history, and a few select recent projects without much explanatory detail. That's how it works in my field, at least.

(Also, I've handled a lot of resumes/CVs for our seasonal hires and the only one that ever had a photo was someone from outside of North America. Definitely do not include a photo unless it's a job in something like modeling or acting. It will look really weird.)

Video

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've recorded a few clips of my mom playing the piano. I want to find out what tune she is playing since neither of us know. What is a good place to post the clip at? How would I do that as I don't want to use YouTube. Does imgur support clips?

Re: Video

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Convert the tune to mp3 (if you can't do this, upload it to youtube, use one of those vid2mp3 websites, then take it down) and then ask around.

I mean, unless seeing the pianist is important to the tune or something. But I would definitely understand not wanting family members plastered on the internet.

You could try using SoundHound or something similar?

Shower issues

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a skin condition that flares up everytime I shower. The only thing that controls it is a two hour long treatment regime of ultra greasy creams. After a full day of work, I'm so tired I can't face it. And showering without the creams is disastrous.

It's stressing me out so much I'm now only showering once a week. It's disgusting.

Anyone got any suggestion s?

Re: Shower issues

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-02-20 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you tried adjusting the heat of your water? It might be prudent to start taking very lukewarm baths rather than showers if the issue is that the water is drying out your skin.

If that's still too much, consider a "bush shower". Clean your pits and privates with washcloth. If your hair is too greasy to stand, run it under the tap.

Also, there are various shampoos and soaps specifically made for controlling dermatitis/psoriasis that can usually be bought at pharmacies. You may want to look into those.
