Nah.

Re: Do you judge people...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all. I will very rarely watch 'BASED ON A TRUE STORY WHERE SAD SHIT HAPPENS AND EVERYONE PROBABLY DIES OR IS TRAUMATIZED!" type things because to me, media is about escapism, not being reminded that that little girl who was kidnapped was probably either killed or pedo-bait.

Everyone having different tolerance levels I can understand, but absolute 0 tolerance makes me wonder how they get through life.

A bit, yeah. Guys, it's just a book. You can put it in the fridge if it's too adult for you.

Not really...? Not that I know anyone who can't, but I figure that everyone can chose what or not to watch for whatever reason.

No. I totally understand the desire for escapism and wanting at least one space where they don't have to hear about all the bad stuff going on in the world, be it fictional or real. Especially if they've got a lot of bad shit happening in their personal lives already.

Re: Do you judge people...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I judge people who judge me for it.

I'm sorry, but I don't want to watch a movie about a man who's dying. Not because "sick people are ew," but because I find that sort of tihng too upsetting.

I judge people who like them a lot harder than those who don't. You're just looking for an excuse or reassurance to be shitty to other people instead of putting in the work to be a more moral person, you know it and I know it, now shape up boys and girls. Its a bright and hopeful world out there and you should seek out reassurance that it is okay to keep hoping and working for the best.

It depends, are we talking about people who exclusively watch Hallmark Family, or people who don't want to binge-watch Jessica Jones the month it's released? (I know both.)

Not usually. I don't know their shit and anyways, people should consume things because they want to.

IF, however, it's a white person saying a novel about racial oppression is "just too much to stomach," or like, idk, a straight person thinking The Laramie Project is offensively upsetting, I might side-eye a bit. So context matters, but I almost always don't judge.

Re: Do you judge people...

Not at all. I myself refuse to watch anything composed of characters that do nothing but suffer and die. I don't see the point in it.

Nah. Just so long as they don't get up my own ass because I like something they deride as "grimdark" or whatever.

Though I do agree with the anon who says that anyone who absolutely refuses to engage in anything remotely negative, including real life, probably has issues.

No, people have different tolerances for that shit and if someone can't handle any depressing stuff then that's perfectly fine and dandy and I am not going to judge them over something so stupid.

Re: Do you judge people...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I know any. I know a lot of people who prefer to avoid it, though. I can handle depressing media if it's really, really well done and is depressing in a meaningful way. If it's just a constant downer and isn't thoughtfully presented/crafted, I'm NHFT.

No? I can sometimes and sometimes I can't. If my depression is bad I know I have to be careful. For me I often need a happy ending. Bad, awful things can happen, but often I need to know that things turn out all right in the end. Otherwise it can make my depression worse.

Re: Do you judge people...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not at all. We had that thread the other day where the poster wanted to avoid a book that might be depressing, and the replies turned my stomach. They have no idea what might have been going on in the OP's life that he couldn't handle fictional media, and I know that there are certain topics that I can't handle ever. I wish people here would try for some very basic empathy rather than the snide comments, insults, and judgement I see so frequently.

I didn't think so, but I got a deep feeling of disgust in the pit of my stomach at the op when I read that thread about tThe magicians yesterday.

Re: Do you judge people...

If it's just a case of "I'm not in the mood for that kind of thing right now," then no, because everyone has times when they're just not up for something depressing. But if they absolutely refuse to watch anything that doesn't have a happy ending, then yes. It comes across as them living in some kind of unhealthy fantasy world.

Re: Do you judge people...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, because I'm one of them. But I think the key bit is that I don't ask anyone to label it or give me a rundown on every conceivable spoiler for me. My inability to stomach depressing media is my own responsibility, I do my own research and I take my own risks when I choose what to consume.
