Politics

A politics general thread.

North Carolina Republicans rush bill designed to strip away anti-discrimination protections from LGBT people through legislature:

 http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/politics-columns-blogs/under-the-dome/article67731847.html

It is so frustrating and awful the way that time and time again, the Republican Party shows that this kind of hate is their number one priority, the thing thats more important to them than anything else. I don't know how any right-thinking person could identify with the North Carolina Republican Party. God damn.

"right-thinking" or "Right-thinking"?

Bernie

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I want Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic nominee so, so badly. But even I'm starting to lose hope. Even with his recent wins, he's so far behind.

if he can win washington at idaho and utah levels, he'll close the gap by +70something delegates

Re: Bernie

I was so excited he won a few primaries lately. But yeah it's not looking likely.

I'm reminding myself that if he doesn't make it this time the fact is he still gained so much more momentum than people would have expected before, and it gives me hope for our future. Maybe after this cycle he can try again, or someone with similar ideas (Warren, maybe?) can have a go, and have a better chance at support.

Re: Bernie

Don't lose hope, even if he ultimately loses just by staying in the race he drags Hillary to the left and gets some of the economic reforms he's been talking about onto the radar. If blacks let him of course. That's why blacks are Hillary voting, because we know that as much she fucks us over, by voting Hillary we'll be fucking the white kids over and a black man has few chances in politics to shaft the whites. Vote Hillary! Show the white kids what it's been like to be economically black for the last thirty years.

Depressing things in the news the last few days:

Far fewer polling stations in Arizona and long hours keep potential voters away. Also a lot of mis-registering of Democrats as Independents or Republicans: http://reverbpress.com/politics/battlegrounds/arizona-democrats-primary-republicans/

http://www.thenation.com/article/there-were-five-hour-lines-to-vote-in-arizona-because-the-supreme-court-gutted-the-voting-rights-act/

I can get any other links if someone wants, those were just the first in my Facebook.

Not so long after the Bundys and their gang took over Federal Land, Republican Congressmen are putting forth a bill asking for what those criminals were demanding:

http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/03/23/republicans-channel-the-bundys-with-federal-land-bill/?smid=fb-share

Nixon Policy Maker finally admits that the War on Drugs was targetted at the left and Blacks: http://jezebel.com/nixons-policy-advisor-admits-he-invented-war-on-drugs-t-1766359595?utm_medium=sharefromsite&utm_source=Jezebel_facebook

(sorry, that's the link I have for it, but you can probably find it elsewhere)

McConnell says he won't fill Supreme Court vacancy without NRA and businessmen approval: http://reverbpress.com/politics/supreme-court-national-rifle-association-mcconnell/

I am sooooo pissed over Arizona. No one should have to wait overnight in line to fricken' vote!

Yup. Voting is a right.

I wasn't surprised that Trump won in Arizona, though. Arizona is pretty much the most extreme state when it comes to anti-immigrant sentiment. They've gotten smacked down by the Supreme Court several times for creating their own immigration laws that clearly conflict with Federal law and encroach on what is a federal issue. I may not like the Federal immigration law so much, but in this case it is so much better than what Arizona wants to do.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-03-24 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Trump as much as anyone. He's a bigoted asshole.

You know how you fight this? You have anti-Trump demonstrations! Fully support that.

You know how you don't fight this? By acting like fucking chalk drawings for a political candidate are a threat you have to run to the Grownups about. Isolating yourself from opposition is never, ever going to train you to fight it. The student movements of the sixties and seventies didn't win concessions by saying they felt bad. They fucking occupied offices and quads. They got in people's faces.

These people aren't fighting, they're creating an easily-handled customer service ticket for the institution they're paying exorbitant amounts of money to.

These people aren't fighting bullies. They're asking the principal to yell at bullies for them.

“You are not listening! Come speak to us, we are in pain!”

If chalk makes you "in pain" how the hell are you going to fight the thugs? Because the thugs will come.

You think they're actually in pain from chalk markings? Please. They want their way, they want it now, and this is the quickest and easiest way to get it. Entitled, narcissistic infants, crying crocodile tears.

No, I totally get that they're in pain. I'm in pain. I'm Arab-American. I haven't been this worried or felt this unwelcome since 9/11. Trump is uncovering, encouraging and increasing really ugly rhetoric. And it's going to get worse when he wins the nomination and is fighting a Democrat. He hasn't bothered to say anything really ugly about LGBT folks yet and that's going to happen.

Entitled, narcissistic infants, crying crocodile tears.

Nah. Not infants. Infantalized, though. A lot of the problem is that schools teach major protest movements wrong, if at all. We act like the Civil Rights Movement, Women's Movement, Gay Liberation Movement, etc basically stated their grievances and acted politely until they got their way. Rosa Parks was a kindly old tired lady and not a dedicated activist executing a planned provocation. Stonewall was just a lot of people finally Fed Up! No they weren't throwing rocks at police that's impossible. Act Up? That's just a line from Rent right

You get the real history in college! But that might be too late. By that point it's ingrained in you that change happens by appealing to authority and expecting them to do the right thing.
