I basically agree. I'm okay with Mary Sues and self inserts in general, that's fine, it's fantasy. But first person Reader fic too often has zero characterization. It's lazy. Choose Your Own Adventure books have more character depth than some of these.

Yes, there are exceptions, and in the end it's still down to 'write what makes you happy.' But Reader still hits me wrong.

sabotabby: (books!)

I get uncommonly squicked by them. To each their own, but they make me uncomfortable. I never thought I'd miss violet-eyed Mary Sues, but there you have it.

I just wish they were easier to blacklist on Ao3. I got the tag blocked but some still get through. :(

I hate them too, and I'm not sure I can really articulate why. I just. Ugh.

I actually think these would be a lot of fun, if only I could find any that were actually GOOD.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Why are there so many fucking male character x female insert """""scenario"""" and '''''''imagine'''''' blogs on tumblr? They show up by the hundreds in all my tracked tags. I keep blocking them, but they keep creating them. Calm your thirsty asses. Damn.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't say they're good, but sometimes they're entertaining to read. I can't read them as anything other than author-self inserts though, because there's no way to capture the actual reader's identity.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard of this but assumed it was relatively innocentish twelve year olds doing this.

... looking at the comments, apparently not.

(I did have a fic about me and a canon character in my head when I was in high school, but I was too embarrassed to put it down on paper. It was decidedly PG-13, though.)

I can appreciate that they aren't coy about what they're doing. I mean, if you're gonna write self insert fic, might as well do it right, yeah?

They're not my thing but I don't really care if people write them, though I suppose if my fandoms were drowning in them it'd irk me.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I never realised how popular character x reader fanfics were until i google a character's name and the first thing that pops up is reader fanfic

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more amused by it than anything. I remember seeing a whole bunch of these kinds of fics years ago where the character was literally a self-insert referred to as "your name" rather than just a mary sue or someone else's self-insert (usually hosted on quizilla where the site's format lent itself to that type of fic. A lot of them ended up being a "choose your own adventure" kind of thing since you were able to select actions from a set of options and could get different results). After a while, I just stopped seeing them and I was kind of surprised at the massive resurgence I've seen over the past year or so. It's not my thing, but I think it's interesting

I hate them too, and have zero interest. I scroll past, but it's annoying that there are SO MANY to scroll past. I never had much interest in PWPs either, or SI fics, but somehow I find those way less cringey.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's forcing you to read them?

I would not mind, in theory, I just never saw one that clicked' for me, and had to stop reading, because if it's supposed to be "me", it's sort of weird if it's OOC for me, if that makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate them so much.

I didn't mind at first, and in theory, I still don't care what people like to read and/or write. But why so many? Where is all the normal fic? Blog after blog that writes nothing but 'imagine' prompts, but not a single blog that fills any regular prompts.

I hope this trend goes away soon.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like self inserts either, but they're easy enough to scroll past and ignore.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
These hit my secondhand embarrassment squick so hard it's not even funny.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I always read the "Y/N" thing as "yes or no," which annoys me so much I have never tried to read the fics.

I agree. I really don't like them and I feel like they've been everywhere recently. I'm not going to get super stressed about it, but I do find them annoying.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind them if they were delivered in twine or visual novel form, where the reader could actually input their name. (I mean, that'd also keep them off ao3 or tumblr as well)

I don't like Reader/Character stories, because it's always out of character on my part. No, I wouldn't blush and lay there, I'd make a snarky comment and make them work for it!

Seriously though, if it's not your thing, just skip over it. There's plenty of other stories in the sea.
