I agree if you're talking about harping over unrequited crushes, both online and IRL, but I have to disagree if you're talking about requited relationships. Sure, sometimes people are different in person and you just don't click when you meet each other IRL, but I know quite a few people who've had serious internet relationships that function pretty much as any 'normal' long distance relationship would. Hell, LJ had something on the frontpage recently about a couple who met through the site and ended up getting married.
